Issued at 345 AM CST Fri Jan 10 2020 A slow-moving storm system will bring heavy rain to central Illinois over the next 48 hours...with many locations picking up 3 to 4 inches of rain. As colder air gradually filters into the region, freezing rain, sleet and snow will develop west of the I-55 corridor...particularly on Saturday. Snow accumulations of 2 to 3 inches will be possible west of the Illinois River by Saturday night. Ice accumulations of up to one quarter of an inch will also be possible, mainly west of the Illinois river. && .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) ISSUED AT 345 AM CST Fri Jan 10 2020 The first round of rain continues to move across central and southeast Illinois early this morning and will continue through the day. Rainfall totals have already reach to around 1 inch since it started yesterday morning. Rain and isolated thunderstorms will continue across the same area as it is now with areas to the northwest receiving either no precip or very little during the day. The second round of rain and possible thunderstorms will begin tonight and spread another inch of rain across the northwest areas of the CWA, mainly west of I-55...before midnight. This heavy rainfall and storms will shift east overnight back into areas that are currently receiving rain. So, additional rainfall of 1.00 to 1.25 inches is possible on top of what has already fallen the last 12-18hrs. This could lead to localized flooding or even flash flooding, as well as rises on area rivers. Therefore the Flood Watch will continue for this afternoon through tonight and Saturday. As colder air moves in from the northwest tonight the precip will change to a mix of freezing rain with some sleet as well. It appears the most ice accumulation, up to one quarter of an inch, will occur between midnight and 6 am on Saturday northwest of the IL river. Therefore the winter storm watch has been changed to a winter weather advisory beginning at midnight tonight and continuing through Sat and into Sat evening to account for snow fall that will occur on Sat. An additional 1 to 1.5 inches of rainfall will be possible across southeast IL. The Flood Watch will end at noon across most of the area, but continue for eastern and southeast IL until 3 pm on Saturday. While the rain is occurring in the east, the mix of freezing rain and sleet will change over to all snow in the northwest, west of the IL river. By Sat evening, 1-2 inches of snow will accumulate west of the IL river. The deformation zone snow will be occurring at this point and then continue into Sat evening, resulting in snow totals of 2-3 inches possible west of the IL river...where the winter advisory is in effect for...until midnight Sat night. Ice accumulations around the Illinois river will be around one tenth of an inch with lesser amounts to the east toward I-55. Snowfall totals will be less east of the Illinois river, dropping to around 1 inch around I-55 and then lesser amounts east of that. Temps will drop through the period with areas to the northwest reaching into the teens by Sunday morning. Windy condition are expected again with this system on the front side and then on the back side with the snow and colder air. Some blowing or drifting of the snow is possible, but think this will be limited given the amount of rain before the snow arrives. Beyond this system several more weaker systems will move across the area with chances or slight chances of rain and/or snow during next week. Temps will moderate back up into the mid 30s to 50s for Mon through Wednesday before falling again on Thursday. && .AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Saturday morning) Issued at 545 AM CST Fri Jan 10 2020 IFR and LIFR cigs will prevail at all TAF sites next 24hrs. SPI and DEC are MVFR right now, but will go back down as more rain moves into the area this morning. Rain is light this morning but will get heavier again as the next wave moves into the area and effects all TAF sites late this afternoon through tonight. At SPI/DEC/CMI have also added VCTS as isolated to scattered storms will be possible this afternoon through tonight. Southerly winds will increase and become gusty as the boundary get closer to the sites with PIA switching to northerly first, followed by BMI.
