Illinois River at Beardstown affecting Brown, Cass, Morgan and
Schuyler Counties.
.Rainfall of 1.5 to 3 inches fell across the Illinois River basin
around Peoria northward over the last 24 hours. This has caused the
decrease in river levels at Peoria to temporarily stop, but a very
slow decline should resume tonight. Downstream at Havana and
Beardstown, levels are close to their projected peak.
The following forecasts are based on observed precipitation, soil
moisture conditions, and forecast precipitation.

Issued at 1033 AM CDT Fri May 15 2020 A cold front will continue to move southeast into the Ohio Valley today and tonight giving us abrief resput from the widespread rain. A low pressure system moving along the front will push it back northward into central and southeast Illinois Saturday and Saturday Night and returning rain chances to the region. High pressure should build into the Midwest late Sunday bringing dry weather for the first part of the work week. && .UPDATE... Issued at 1033 AM CDT Fri May 15 2020 Cold front currently extends from Danville to near Litchfield. Precipitation has diminished in most areas near and behind the front and have pulled the PoPs from that region. Have left a slight chance in for locations near the boundary, but as the front sags south, rain chances should be confined to I-70 and south by late afternoon. Low clouds lag the surface front and are inhibiting heating somewhat. Have made some changes to the temperature forecast today with slightly warmer readings expected on either side of the band of moisture. && .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) ISSUED AT 338 AM CDT Fri May 15 2020 Early this morning, a decaying line of showers and thunderstorms will continue to push southeast across central Illinois. Precip chances will diminish through the morning in the wake of this line. While widespread precip is not expected through the afternoon and evening, additional widely scattered showers and storms are possible along a cold front that is slowly sagging across the region. Only modest instability is expected this afternoon, with MLCAPE values of around 1000 J/kg. The axis of highest instability is expected to be offset south of the stronger winds aloft and shear, thus any precip should be fairly pulse like in nature. In addition, there is some uncertainty on the amount of recovery with precip likely continuing south of the forecast area along outflow from this mornings storms which will cut off moisture transport into the region. Lack of support aloft with mid level shortwave ridging/axis of height rises over the local area this afternoon should also help limit coverage of precip this afternoon. Expect dry weather to prevail overnight with lows in the mid 50s north to lower 60s south. .LONG TERM...(Saturday through Thursday) ISSUED AT 338 AM CDT Fri May 15 2020 Unsettled and stormy weather is expected to continue over the weekend. Another compact shortwave is expected to move across the northern Great Plains and Upper Midwest over the weekend with a surface low forming over the mid Mississippi Valley later Saturday and lifting to northern Indiana late Sunday. Showers and thunderstorms are expected with the warm front as it lifts north across the area on Saturday, then again with the trailing cold front on Sunday. The amount of instability is a bit uncertain and possibly marginal both days this weekend with convective debris/cloud cover in place, but deep layer shear will be slightly favorable both days on the southern periphery/right entrance region to the upper jet. As such, will have to keep an eye out for some severe thunderstorm potential each day. Precip chances will diminish by Monday as an expansive ridge builds across the Great Lakes and Midwest with dry weather likely prevailing much of the week under the influence of the surface ridge. Monday looks to be the cool day topping out in the 60s, but a gradual warming trend is expected the remainder of the week as the high slowly retreats northeast. A highly meridional pattern is still expected to develop during the first half of the upcoming week with a very strong upper ridge across the mid section of the country and centered off to our west. Guidance seems to be holding onto keeping this strong ridge and heat dome just to our west during the middle part of next week with a deep upper low meandering across portions of the Ohio Valley to mid Atlantic Coast. Predictability of these cutoff lows is typically lower, thus confidence in some of the details during particularly the latter half of the week is also lower. But for now, the likelihood of the earlier advertised heat during the latter half of next week seems considerably lower with possibly some precip chances returning depending on how far west the upper low retrogrades. && .AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Saturday morning) Issued at 651 AM CDT Fri May 15 2020 IFR conditions are at SPI and PIA, but only expecting SPI to remain that way at the start of the TAF period. Expecting PIA to to lift into MVFR range for start of TAFs, but will keep tempo of lower cigs. DEC/BMI/CMI will all start as VFR this morning, but all sites will move into MVFR category around 14z, with some sites seeing lower MVFR at times for couple of hours. Around and just after 18z, all sites will rise to VFR with BMI at 3.5kft. The VFR conditions will continue through rest of the TAF period. Cigs will be around 4kft for the afternoon, then scatter out for the evening, leaving a cirrus cigs for the evening. At SPI/DEC/CMI cigs will drop to 10kft during for overnight with PIA and BMI just seeing broken cirrus. Winds will be variable this morning but become northwest as boundary moves through over next couple of hours.
