Issued at 319 AM CDT Thu Apr 30 2020 A few rain showers will linger over east central Illinois today as low pressure moves slowly eastward away from the area, while clearing skies gradually extend eastward into central Illinois. The weather should largely be dry the remainder of the week. Breezy northwest winds are expected today, gusting to around 30 mph at times. High temperatures should range from upper 50s in the east today to mid 60s in the west, and will steadily increase the next few days. By Saturday, highs will be well into the 70s across the area. && .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) ISSUED AT 319 AM CDT Thu Apr 30 2020 Strong surface low pressure over SW lower Michigan this morning will slowly move eastward today, gradually easing pressure gradients across central IL. Until then, brisk NW winds 15-20 mph can be expected through afternoon today, with gusts over 30 mph. Evening should see a rapid decrease in wind speeds. Scattered light showers will continue to be possible from around Champaign to Olney eastward as another shortwave rotates around the main upper low. Highs will be cool for this time of year, mid to upper 50s in the showery eastern areas, ranging up to mid 60s in west central IL. Tonight, clearing should spread across the entire area as high pressure shifting eastward becomes the dominant weather influence. Morning lows should reach around 40 degrees. .LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday) ISSUED AT 319 AM CDT Thu Apr 30 2020 Dry conditions and a warming trend are expected Friday and Saturday as a high pressure ridge builds over the region. Highs should reach the upper 60s Friday, and upper 70s Saturday. A cold front pushing southward through the area Saturday night or Sunday should bring the next chance of showers and thunderstorms. Uncertainty with the timing and details of this front and the interaction with an upper level shortwave continue, however the general idea has been consistent the past few days in model solutions. After this frontal passage, cooler weather should follow into next week as highs drop lower into the 70s Sunday and back to the 60s next week. A dry period should follow for Monday, then the next system could arrive as early as Monday night and continue through Tuesday or Tuesday night. && .AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Thursday night) Issued at 612 AM CDT Thu Apr 30 2020 High pressure and drier air will begin to overspread the area today as slow moving low pressure finally departs to the east.
