* WHAT...a combination of freezing rain, freezing drizzle and snow
  early this morning, with a brief period of moderate to heavy
  later this morning. Total snow accumulation of 2 to 5 inches and
  ice accumulations less than one tenth of an inch. Winds gusting
  as high as 40 mph.

* WHERE...Roughly areas east of I-35, including all of southeast
  Kansas. 

* WHEN...Precipitation should end by 3 PM. The heaviest snow is 
  expected between 8 AM and 11 AM. Only light precipitation is 
  expected after noon. 

* IMPACTS...Untreated roads will be slippery. Visibilities less
  than one quarter of a mile are possible in the heavy snow and
  blowing snow.

This morning:
Challenging forecast with multiple hazards. Very early this
morning, will have transient dense fog along leading edge of rich
moist working north in the greater Wichita metro areas. Elevated
storms during the morning may be strong-severe with good 700MB-
500MB and 0-6km bulk shear offsetting very modest instability.
Main threat is hail, with isolated 60 mph wind gusts also
possible. As precipitation becomes more widespread, severe threat
should wane.

This afternoon-evening:
Focus shifts to winter weather in central KS, where combo of
freezing rain and snow is expected. Snowfall rates could be
impressive for a few hours this afternoon around Russell and
Lincoln counties given deep supercooled layer and good lapse rates
in snow growth zone. As the cold air spills south, anticipate an
expanding area of freezing rain, which could would reach KHUT-KEWK
line roughly around 3 pm, and into the Wichita metro between 5-6
pm. Sounding are especially problematic with very deep supercooled
moisture with a tiny layer just off the surface cold enough to
generate ice. Travel could be especially problematic this evening
across much of central and south central KS as roads begin to
freeze.

The second round of snow is expected later tonight and Saturday,
with most of that in southeast KS. Variations continue in location
of heavier snow, with latest ECMWF a bit slower and south of GFS.

Sunday:
Another fast moving and compact shortwave moves across the area
during the day. Concur with NAM that there should be a chance for
flurries or light snow across central KS and parts of the Flint

Issued at 1120 PM CST Thu Jan 9 2020

Moisture is currently moving into the region. The clouds will be
moving into the region during the night. There are some showers
and a few thunderstorms that are also developing but these are to
the east of ICT. Over the next 12 hours, showers and isolated
thunderstorms are expected to over spread the region. This will
primarily affect the HUT, ICT and CNU terminals through the
morning hours Friday. By the afternoon, colder air will push into
the region and start the slow transition to a mixed wintry
precipitation and then over to snow by the evening. CNU will be
the last to make the switch over to snow during the night Friday.
The RSL, GBD and SLN terminals will be the first to get the
snowfall. Winds will be brisk in these areas and blowing snow is
likely during the afternoon reducing visibilities.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of Central Kansas,
South Central Kansas and Southeast Kansas.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday

A few storms will be possible Friday afternoon and early evening
across southeast Kansas. Some of the stronger storms will be
capable of nickel size hail and 50 to 60 mph winds.

Winter weather will make a return Friday evening through Saturday
as rain changes over to a wintry mix and eventually snow. While
much of the area will have a chance for measurable snow, areas
along and especially southeast of the Kansas Turnpike will have the
best chance at seeing higher snow totals of 3 to 6 inches and a
winter storm watch has been posted for those areas.
