What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this wind advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Wichita, KS wrote its last area forecast discussion before this wind advisory went out at Oct 11, 3:12 AM CDT, 10 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Oct 11, 3:12 AM CDT, 10 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Wichita KS
312 AM CDT Sun Oct 11 2020

.SHORT TERM...(Today through Tuesday night)
Issued at 224 AM CDT Sun Oct 11 2020

Water vapor imagery currently shows shortwave energy moving over the
Northern Rockies and approaching the northern High Plains. At the
surface, lee troughing is in place with return flow remaining over
the Plains.

Fog will once again be likely this morning, but based on forecast
sounding and current conditions, looks like it will be more shallow
and not as widespread as yesterday. Current thinking is that the
Flint Hills into southeast KS will have the best chance at something
more than patchy.

Gusty south winds and above normal temperatures will once again be
in place across the forecast area today. Most locations will climb
into the low 90s. Not out of question we may bump up next to records
if we get a couple degrees hotter than what we have forecast. Very
progressive cold front is still expected to move through tonight
with very strong winds for a couple hours right behind the front.
Current thinking is that sustained speeds in the 30-35 mph range
will be common with gusts over 40 mph. However, these higher speeds
will be short-lived and will only last an hour or two.

Confidence remains high that the bulk of the showers and storms
associated with the front will stay just northeast of our forecast
area, with mainly just some pockets of sprinkles or high based
showers possible along our northeast fringes.

Even though highs on Mon will be cooler than than the last several
days, they will still be a few degrees above seasonal averages.
Strong downslope component will be one of the main factors keeping
temps up Monday. Weak surface trough will slide down into KS on Tue
but will not affect temps much, with above normal highs forecast
again on Tue.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Saturday)
Issued at 224 AM CDT Sun Oct 11 2020

Strong northwest flow will remain from the Pacific Northwest
through the Plains for Tue night into Wed with good model
agreement in another shortwave swinging across the
northern/central Plains Wed into Wed night. This will allow a more
significant cold front to sweep through the area Wed night into
early Thu morning. Behind this front, for the first time in a
while, below normal temps will be in place to finish out the work
week.

Looks to be considerable uncertainty regarding the potential cold
surge for the end of next weekend. The ECMWF digs the upper
trough further west compared to the GFS which results in a much
more robust surge of cold air compared to the GFS.

&&

.AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Sunday night)
Issued at 1148 PM CDT Sat Oct 10 2020

Shallow ground fog has already developed at KCNU per observations
during the past hour. Anticipate this will persist intermittently
most of the night, with forecast soundings looking favorable for
continue development through daybreak at KCNU. Still anticipate
low clouds will develop around KRSL and KGBD with smaller chances
at KHUT/KSLN/KICT. Otherwise gusty south winds are expected by
mid morning which will persist throughout the afternoon. With
decent 850MB moisture, heating and some low level lift, anticipate
some cumulus at all sites in the afternoon. Front will move
through central KS with 30g38kts probable in a narrow band behind
front. Precipitation chances at KSLN/KCNU are too low to mention,
given very marginal moisture. -Howerton

&&

.FIRE WEATHER...
Issued at 306 AM CDT Sun Oct 11 2020

Very high grassland fire danger will be in place this afternoon
and early evening.

Strong south winds will be in place today across the entire area
at speeds in the 20-25 mph range with gusts over 30 mph. Afternoon
RH values are expected to range from around 30% west of Highway 14
to the 40-50% range across the remainder of the area. With grasses
starting to become more cured, these conditions will lead to
pockets of very high grassland fire danger.

After dark, a cold front is expected to quickly move through the
forecast area from north to south. Strong north winds are forecast
behind the front for a couple of hours at speeds in the 30-35 mph
range with gusts 40-45 mph. These winds are expected to reach I-70
in the 9pm-11pm range and Wichita around midnight.
