.SYNOPSIS...
A very strong cold front will cross the region from the west today
through this evening, accompanied by abundant moisture today and
followed by very rapid cooling tonight. The front will move off the
Eastern Seaboard on Christmas Day, with the extremely cold air
continuing to settle across the region in its wake. Dry high
pressure will build in and persist over the weekend, with another
cold front arriving early next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 330 am EST: There are some adjustments with the morning
issuance. The Wind Advisory for high elevations now covers nearly
all of the NC mountains above 3500 feet with the arrival of the
southerly 55+ kt low level jet. A Flash Flood Watch has been posted
for Rabun County GA to Henderson County NC in the region of best
upslope enhancement this morning. Rainfall totals of 3 to 4 inches
are likely in the Flash Flood Watch area. Elevations above 3500 feet
in and around the Smokies are being upgraded to a Winter Storm
Warning with snowfall totals of 4 to 6 inches in places from the
Skyway in Graham County across the Smokies and into Haywood County.
And, a Wind Chill Advisory has been posted for mainly high
elevations in the NC mountains from late this evening through Friday
and well into Friday night as temperatures get very cold even as
winds gradually slacken.
For the particulars, the gradient wind threat for high elevations
will ramp up quickly as a 50 to 60 kt southerly jet arrives through
the early morning hours before exiting quickly east of the high
terrain late this morning or early this afternoon. This robust flow
required a small Wind Advisory expansion to high elevation portions
of Macon, southern Jackson, Transylvania, and Buncombe Counties
through noon. Cannot rule out some 30 to 40 mph gusts mixing down in
the valleys in any of the mountain counties, but it still looks like
the Advisory level 45 to 50 mph gusts will be above 3500 feet.
Otherwise, the highly amplified upstream trough deepening from the
Great Lakes to the lower MS River Valley will continue to amplify
today. The associated, very strong cold front was moving through
central Kentucky, central Tennessee, and northern Alabama early this
morning and it will continue to make steady progress eastward toward
the southern Appalachians. Deep moisture is poised to move into the
southern Appalachians around daybreak and will combine with the
aforementioned low-level jet to produce very heavy rainfall along
the southern and eastern escarpment areas. Rates in the extreme
southern Appalachians could approach FFG values in the southern most
NC mountain counties where 3 to 4 inch totals are expected, and the
Flash Flood Watch from 6 am to 6 pm was posted from Rabun GA to
Henderson NC to address this threat.
Any severe thunderstorm potential ahead of the front should be
farther east later in the day as the low-level jet crosses the I-77
corridor just as sbCAPE values experience a modest uptick to around
200 J/kg. Deep-layer shear will reach 70+ kt with the fropa, and
wave action along the frontal zone could lead to backing of the
surface flow as well. The better severe/tornado threat will crank up
just east of our forecast area this afternoon, so the latest
Marginal Risk from SPC for Day 1 mainly along/east of I-77 looks
well placed for damaging winds and isolated tornadoes.
Finally, snow levels will crash across the mountains through the
late afternoon and evening hours, with northwest flow snow
persisting in the very cold air through daybreak and beyond. Flash
freezing of moisture may occur as well post fropa. The main
adjustment has been to update the higher elevations in and near the
Smokies to a Winter Storm Warning given the expected 4 to 6 inch
(locally 8+) snow accums. The precipitation could end as brief snow
showers east of the mountains tonight with the passing upper
vorticity lobe east in the trough/low axis. These may provide some
brief excitement outside of the mountains, but no accumulations are
expected with any brief wintry showers across the foothills and
Piedmont. The northwest flow moisture will slowly dry up through the
day on Friday, with the upslope component becoming more westerly
with time. Additional Advisories or Special Weather Statements could
be needed Friday to address the longer term slippery road
conditions. Very cold temperatures will stay locked in the teens and
20s across the mountains Friday, with 30s outside of the mountains.
Winds early and very cold temperatures late have led to a long
duration Wind Chill Advisory for high mountain locations from late
this evening, through Friday, and well into Friday night.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 130 AM EST Thursday...The upper level trof will continue to
push east of the FA early Sat as a stg subs zone and deep layered
drying moves in from the NW. This pattern will support a sfc high
meandering south of the area. Temps still remain cold Sat with lows
in the 20s over the non/mtns and and in the teens across the mtn
valleys. Wind chill values will be quite cold across the higher
elevations, yet advisory level WCs look to only occur abv 5 Kft
where the stronger winds prevail. With the cold morning lows, max
temps will be held in the m40s over most locales even within high
insol and some measure of downslope flow early on. While sfc td/s
slowly modify into the teens across NE GA, there could be a window
of low RH criteria for a possible fire danger statement. Will
continue to assess this threat along with fuel moisture levels. The
BL remains quite dry and weak through Sun, while PWATs persist below
0.25 inches. So, expect another high insol day with mins dropping
abt 5 degrees below normal. With continued modification of the
sfc-layer max temps shud return to seasonal levels.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 210 AM EST Thursday...The guidance continues to show a weakly
supported and rather dry cold front approaching the wrn zones early
Mon. With the better h5 dyno forcing well to the north across the OH
Valley and llvl moisture adv shunted due to ridging across the nrn
GOM...will expect little impact as the front crosses east thru the
day. Perhaps some -snsh across the Smokies arnd daybreak with little
to no accum. A deeply dry cP airmass pushes in from Canada Mon
afternoon and this will control the weather until another, yet
wetter and more organized, frontal system looks to cross the FA Wed
night. Currently the sfc layer is expected to remain too warm ahead
of this system to produce -snsh outside of the higher elevations of
the NC mtns. Still a ways off tho, and the fcst will change to some
degree over the next few days. Mostly dry conds, yet with a cooler
airmass mixing in, will anticipate max/min temps around or little
below normal during the period.

.AVIATION /09Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
At KCLT and elsewhere: The most certain part of the aviation
forecast is that a period of very heavy rain showers will cross the
region today, followed by snow showers developing across the
mountains late today through tonight. The uncertainty exists over
how low restrictions will go, with generally IFR to MVFR favored
overall given the improving mixing on southerly flow ahead of the
approaching strong cold front, but with the potential for brief LIFR
to more solid IFR conditions under the heaviest downpours.
Scattering and lifting of the restrictions will occur quickly east
of the mountains with dry slotting arriving from the southwest
tonight. Winds will become gusty throughout, and the stout low-level
jet around 900 to 850 mb will provide for LLWS conditions at times
through much of the day. The best potential for TSRA will be around
KCLT this afternoon, but confidence is low given the paltry
instability indicated by the models ahead of the fropa. Will thus
hold off on any TSRA mention for now given that coverage will be
better east of KCLT. Expect some snow showers to mix in at KAVL
through the evening hours as snow levels crash into the valleys and
fairly deep moisture persists behind the boundary. The gusty
southerly winds will become gusty west to northwest tonight.
Outlook: Wintry precipitation remains possible over the NC mountains
through Friday morning, while precip and restrictions will come to
an end elsewhere. Dry high pressure and VFR conditions will return
through the weekend.
