.SYNOPSIS...
A vigorous low pressure system will move across the Ohio River
valley today and into Canada on Thursday, bringing breezy conditions
to our area for the next couple of days. Other than some mountain
snow Wednesday night and early Thursday and again Friday through
Saturday morning, expect dry and cool weather through the weekend.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 330 AM EST: The dense fog has become widespread across
portions of the area this morning. Will issue a Dense Fog Advisory
where it is more widespread and an SPS for patchy dense fog
elsewhere.

Otherwise, an upper low center lifting from the Plains into the OH
valley today swinging a short wave to the spine of the Appalachians.
The associated cold front swings into the area this afternoon. Deep
moisture remains generally limited to behind the front with the pre-
frontal moisture off to the east. Some of the CAM guidance shows
showers developing outside of the mountains as the front moves in
with some instability over the NW piedmont and east of I-77.
Therefore, did allow PoP to increase to the chance range outside of
the mountains this afternoon with a small area of isolated thunder
from Hickory to Salisbury and east of CLT. Precip chances will be
much higher across the mountains where deep moisture and better
forcing move in. Showers move in during the morning and become
widespread by afternoon. Temps are initially warm, so precip will be
liquid. However, cold air comes rushing in during the afternoon
changing the rain to snow, first across the higher elevations of the
Smokies, then spreading across the higher elevations of the rest of
the NC mountains by the end of the day. Don't expect any
accumulations to start until late afternoon and just the higher

southwest winds develop today and shift to NW behind the front
across the mountains.

Snow chances rapidly increase during the evening as cold air comes
rushing in behind the front. The short wave swings across the area
providing plenty of forcing, along with some low level instability.
The one potential limiting factor is wind. It has more of a westerly
component and not quite as strong as normally seen for NW flow snow.
Still, given the depth of the moisture, the forcing, and strong cold
advection, expect snow showers to produce some good amounts across
the higher elevations of the NC mountains. Will issue a Winter
Weather Advisory for locations above 3500 feet where now totals will
be highest. Lower elevations will see snow showers, but amounts
should be limited due to typical NW flow factors. Elevations above
5000 feet could even see warning level snow, but due to local
agreement, we don't issue warnings for just those elevations. NW
winds will become very gusty behind the front, so will go with a
Wind Advisory for all of the NC mountains. Lows will be around 5
degrees below normal combining with the wind for below zero wind
chills, but mainly above 5000 feet.

Outside of the NC mountains, expect precip to end quickly during the
evening with clearing skies overnight. Gusty winds will remain below
advisory level and taper off overnight.

Snow showers taper off quickly Thursday morning but the very gusty
winds will continue through the day. Expect snow totals of an inch
or less over the lower elevations with generally 2 to 4 inches in
the advisory area, with locally higher amounts above 5000 feet. Dry
conditions continue outside of the mountains with gusty winds
returning. Expect gusts to remain below advisory level but they
could reach 30 or even 35 mph, especially across the NC foothills
and piedmont. Highs will be around 10 degrees below normal.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
As of 325 AM Wednesday: the short-term forecast picks up at 00z on
Friday with broad and deep upper trofing lifting over the CWFA. The
upper trof flattens a bit late Thurs into early Fri, before it begins
to amplify again late Friday. By early Sat, the amplified trof axis
will move over the extreme Southeast and then lift offshore later in
the day. At the sfc, a cold front will be moving offshore by early
Thursday with drying high pressure spreading back over the area in
its wake. On Friday, the high will remain nearly stationary and
centered over the Texas/Louisiana Gulf Coast as a plume of cold and
relatively moist air tracks SE across the Ohio River Valley and then
over the Western Carolinas. This will likely bring another round of
light snow showers to the higher elevations and possibly over some
portions of the Foothills, although I currently have no accums there.
Where I do have accumulations, they are currently fcst to remain
below Advisory criteria. Otherwise, temps will remain well-below
normal thru the period.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 255 AM Wednesday: the extended forecast picks up at 12z on
Saturday with deep upper trofing amplifying over the far Southeast
as the period begins. By late Saturday, the trof axis will be lifting
offshore as broad upper ridging spreads back over the region from
the west and remains over the region thru early next week. At the
sfc, broad high pressure centered over the far NW Gulf of Mexico
will keep cool and somewhat moist WLY to NWLY low-lvl flow over the
fcst area thru Sat and should bring some additional light snow
showers to the NC/Tenn Border region. At this time, any accums are
expected to remain below Advisory criteria. On Sunday and Monday,
the high will drift NE and eventually off the Southeast Coast allowing
warmer, SLY flow to spread over the area. At the same time, another
low will develop over the Southern Plains and track NE towards the
Great Lakes by late Mon/early Tues. As it does, it will lift a moist
warm front over our area. As the period ends, the models appear to
generate a second low that roughly follows the track of the first one.
This will keep moist, SLY flow over the CWFA thru day 7. Temps start
out below normal on Saturday and warm to above normal by the end of
the period.

.AVIATION /09Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
At KCLT and Elsewhere: Fog has formed near KCLT and should develop
at the airfield by daybreak. LIFR is likely with VLIFR possible. Fog
will be less restrictive elsewhere but should develop at KHKY and
KAND and be possible elsewhere. VFR stratocumulus/cumulus will
build with the approach of the next trough axis after daybreak, and
scattered shower chances will increase through the afternoon ahead
of the approaching cold front. Thunder chances look minimal, but
best near I-40 where the steeper late day lapse rates will pass
overhead. Expect gusty southwest winds, NW at KAVL, with daytime
mixing, turning westerly late with fropa. Gusty winds continue into
the evening with clearing low clouds outside of the mountains. Low
VFR and possibly even MVFR clouds will continue at KAVL.

Outlook: VFR conditions will generally persist late this week
through the weekend, but with occasional flight restrictions and/or
scattered snow showers possible over the mountains from time to time
Friday through Saturday.

Thursday over the higher elevations, topping 50 mph at some ridge top

...PATCHY DENSE FOG TO DEVELOP OVERNIGHT NEAR THE INTERSTATE 77
CORRIDOR IN THE PIEDMONT OF THE WESTERN CAROLINAS...

Fog will develop through the overnight hours along and near the
Interstate 77 corridor in the Piedmont of western North Carolina
and the eastern Upstate of South Carolina. The fog will likely
reduce visibility to less than one mile across the area, and some
locations may see dense fog and visibility less than one-quarter
miles at times.

The fog may linger into the morning hours on Wednesday and affect
the morning commute. Use extra caution if traveling tonight or
Wednesday morning along or near I-77. Allow extra travel time, use
low beam headlights and fog lamps, and allow extra stopping
distance. The fog should dissipate around mid-morning Wednesday.
If the dense fog develops and becomes more widespread than
currently expected, a Dense Fog Advisory could be posted.
