.SYNOPSIS...
A low pressure system, and associated moisture, will cross the
Southern Appalachians this morning and then quickly exit to the east
by this evening. Dry high pressure will return once again Wednesday
through Thursday before a deep fetch of moisture from the Atlantic
Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico and approaching system brings unsettled
weather to the area on Friday and into the weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 1224 PM EST: Still dealing with the broken band of showers
along the cold front, moving over the eastern zones at 17Z. Some
weak instability has allowed one cell to grow into a thunderstorm,
possibly with gusty winds and small hail. All this activity should
clear the eastern border before 19Z. Meanwhile, a few linear precip
bands were developing in the wnw upslope flow into the NC mtns, so
the WSW will be kept on the TN border, but dropped east of the mtns.

Otherwise, winds will likely become a concern again, at some point
this evening. 850 mb cold advection flow should cap out around
35 to 40 kt this evening to keep winds sub-advisory level. Then,
850 mb winds increase overnight to near 50 kt, but with the cold
advection and mixing leveling off.  For now, will keep gusts below
advisory criteria through tonight at all but the highest ridge tops,
but winds may increase further towards daybreak Tuesday and a Wind
Advisory may well be needed later today.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
As of 325 AM EST Tuesday: The forecast period will begin dry, yet
breezy across the higher terrain, as a remnant piece of energy rides
round the bottom of the upper trough overhead within NW flow. With
this forecast package, winds/wind gusts remain just below advisory
criteria attm, but a Wind Advisory may be needed. Per latest
guidance, expect the pressure gradient to relax into Wednesday
afternoon as upper ridging shifts over the eastern CONUS and sfc
high pressure gradually builds in. As a result, expect dry
conditions Wednesday and Thursday, with temperatures slightly above
normal. As ridging amplifies overhead on Thursday, ridging offshore
will allow for onshore flow to direct moisture into the area. Along
with this moisture source, moisture will infiltrate into the area
from the GOM within SW flow ahead of the next approaching system. As
a result, expect increasing clouds throughout the day on Thursday,
with gradually increasing shower chances beginning Thursday night
due to isentropic lift, initializing across the upslope areas. PoPs
will gradually expand northeastward across the area through into
early Friday morning.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 355 AM EST Tuesday: Expect the end of the week and into the
weekend to be an unsettled one, as sfc low pressure and it's
associated cold front slowly propagate eastward towards the FA. With
latest guidance continuing to suggest this cold front not pushing
through the area until Sunday morning, scattered to widespread
showers will affect the area Friday and Saturday, as deep moisture
continues to infiltrate in ahead of the approaching system from both
the Atlantic and GOM. Healthy upper troughing looks to stay just to
the northwest as it ejects northeastward through the weekend.
Limited instability could allow for isolated thunderstorms across
the extreme southeastern portions on both Friday and Saturday,
though the better instability looks to stay well south/southwest of
the area, as noted by SPCs extended outlook. Rainfall amounts could
range from 1 to 2 inches per latest guidance, with locally higher
amounts across the upslope areas. However, these values could easily
change over the next few days and thus it's way to soon to
confidently secure these values attm. Expect PoPs to gradually trend
down on Sunday as the cold front pushes through the area, with a
possible brief lull in precipitation into Monday, though models
disagree on the length of this dry spell as the recently passed
front will become stalled just south of the area.

Temperatures will remain well above normal through the period, with
max temperatures in the 60s, nearing lower 70s, outside of the
mountains throughout the weekend and into early next week (the
warmest day on Saturday). As a result, expect all precipitation to
fall as rain.

.AVIATION /18Z TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
At KCLT and Elsewhere: The cold front was moving across KCLT at
issuance time, so the first hour may still hold a temporary MVFR
or IFR restriction. However, satellite imagery shows the back edge
of the low cloud ceiling advancing eastward such that it should
be past by 19Z, after which KCLT should be VFR. Wind has already
shifted, so all sites should be NW with frequent gusts through
sunset. Only a few high-based stratocu will remain E of the mtns,
but KAVL could have a low cloud VFR ceiling into late afternoon. The
boundary layer decouples with sunset, so we lose the gusts while
direction stays WNW, only to bring the gusty wind back after
sunrise on Wednesday. Sky should be clear from late tonight onward.

Outlook: Dry high pressure returns Wednesday and Thursday with
VFR conditions. Moisture and the chance of flight restrictions
will return Friday through the weekend as low pressure approaches
again from the west.
