.SYNOPSIS...
Rain will continue to spread across the area through tonight as low
pressure tracks from the Gulf Coast to the South Carolina Coast.
Cool and dry high pressure builds in Friday and dominates the
weather pattern over the weekend. Rain chances return into early
next week with the next approaching cold front.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 645 PM Thursday: The surface wave off the SC coast this
evening continues to move east over the coastal waters, with deeper
drying arriving from the west across the western Carolinas and NE
GA. The trailing surface cold front back over western KY/TN will
move to the spine of the southern Appalachians during the early
overnight hours and then cross the remainder of the forecast area
through Friday morning. A brief shot of shallow upslope moisture
will develop in the northwest flow overnight to get the scattered
upslope snow showers going, but the deeper moisture and stronger
upslope in the colder air will arrive through Friday afternoon. This
is when the bulk of the accumulating snow should get started near
the TN border and at the higher peaks. The current Winter Weather
Advisory appears to have this handled, although some expansion to
the northern mountain NC lower valleys could be needed.

The other concern worth watching is the wind potential for the NC
mountains starting daytime Friday. Cold advection will increase
through the day, with deeper afternoon and evening mixing tapping
into some 45 to 50 kt flow near the top of the mixed layer. Although
winds are mentioned in the current Winter Weather Advisory, gusts
could materialize well down into the valleys and all across and near
the Blue Ridge mountains to warrant a larger scale Wind Advisory.
This will be addressed later this evening or overnight pending
collaboration with the affected neighboring offices.

Max temps may well get locked in the 30s across much of the NC
mountains, with below climo temps east of the mountains in windy
conditions and downslope flow. Some gusts well into the 30s will be
quite possible east of the mountains during peak mixing Friday
afternoon.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 235 PM EST Thursday: While dry conditions are expected across
northeast Georgia, Upstate SC, and the NW Piedmont Friday night,
snow showers will be in the process of gradually tapering off along
the TN border as upper trough swings away from the area and upper
ridge shifts eastward. With anticipated QPF amounts, areas along the
TN border, especially at the higher elevations, could see additional
snow amounts up to an inch or so in some locations. With this fcst
package, a Winter Weather Advisory has been raised for portions of
the NC mountains in the near term forecast period, and will carry
over a few hours into this forecast period. Increased NW winds will
be in place Friday evening too with strong CAA, but do anticipate
these to diminish into late Saturday morning as the pressure
gradient weakens.

For Saturday and Sunday, expect dry and cool conditions as sfc high
pressure dominates the weather pattern, as upper ridging shifts from
the central Plains to the eastern CONUS. Temperatures on Saturday
will remain below normal, with the beginning of a warming trend on
tap, bringing temperatures on Sunday to near normal.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 250 PM EST Thursday: Conditions are expected to remain dry
Sunday night into Monday, as the influence of sfc high pressure
holds on through Monday night, and upper ridging continues to move
overhead and somewhat flatten as it moves offshore into Monday.
Meanwhile, upstream, sfc low pressure is progged to move into the
Great Lakes region and into the Northeast, dropping down towards the
Mid-Atlantic coast around mid week, while it's trailing cold front
propagates eastward towards the area. With the return of SW flow,
expect rain chances to return to the western portions of the area as
early as Tuesday, with the front not progged to push through the
area until Wednesday/Thursday. Guidance continues to have a bit of
inconsistency at this time, but overall expect an unsettled weather
pattern through the end of the fcst period, with showers across the
area, as temperatures remain above freezing. Some limited available
instability could allow for a few rumbles of thunder on Tuesday with
the weak cold front.

Temperatures throughout the period will remain above normal through
the period.

.AVIATION /00Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
At KCLT and Elsewhere: Rain showers will quickly come to an end from
the west across the terminal forecast area this evening as surface
low pressure and deeper moisture move east off the SC coast.
Lingering near surface moisture will be a concern for several hours
tonight as winds slacken and become more variable ahead of a cold
front approaching from the west. Anything from IFR to higher VFR
cigs will be possible, so will simply hint that direction with some
FEW to SCT010 for a few hours at the foothill and Piedmont sites.
Once west to northwest flow gets better established late tonight,
and certainly through the tomorrow morning with fropa, expect only
VFR cigs going forward. KAVL could be an exception, where NW flow
moisture through Friday could generate some near MVFR bases at times
through the day. However, will keep any restrictions and scattered
snow showers NW toward the TN border. Winds will be a significant
issue throughout, with 40 kt possible at KAVL during peak mixing
Friday afternoon, and 30 to 35 kt possible across the foothills and
Piedmont sites.

Outlook: VFR conditions will persist through the weekend, with any
lower bases likely only approaching KAVL through Friday night. More
widespread precipitation and accompanying restrictions will
gradually return from the west during the early to middle part of
next week.
