.SYNOPSIS...
In the wake of a weak cold front, a swiftly moving clipper system
will produce scattered snow showers and very windy conditions in the
northern mountains tonight before dry high pressure returns through
mid week. A strong cold front will approach the region with abundant
moisture on Thursday before the front moves off the eastern seaboard
on Christmas Day. Some of the coldest air of the season so far will
arrive behind the front.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 1227 pm EST: Sky has cleared across the fcst area at midday,
so expect plenty of bright sun for the afternoon. Temp trends look
good, so no reason to think our high temp would not work out.
In the mean time, we wait for the wind to pick up late this
afternoon. No changes.

Otherwise, channeled vorticity with the next northern stream wave
will then cross the far northern tier of the forecast area tonight,
along with a weakly reinforcing surface cold front. These features
will also produce a strong northwest flow pressure gradient in
the cold advection. Solid Wind Advisory gusts are appearing quite
likely. A Wind Advisory has been posted for tonight and Tuesday
morning throughout the northern Blue Ridge mountains region
of western North Carolina, with a high elevation Wind Advisory
farther south down the southern Appalachians, as the 850 mb flow
reaches 50+ kt or greater during the peak of the cold advection. A
few of the higher ridges could see brief damaging wind gusts, but
confidence is just a bit too low for a northern mountains Warning at
present. Northwest flow upslope moisture appears rather shallow for
tonight. Light snow accumulations look possible, but any northern
mountain accums should be sub-Advisory. Wind chill drops will be
modest despite the wind speeds as temperatures remain in the 20s
along the higher elevations tonight.

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
As of 145 AM EST Monday...There could be lingering -snsh across the
nrn NC mtns to begin the period, but these will wane quickly as
deeply dry air moves in from the west associated with broad hipres.
Winds will begin the period gusty across the higher terrain, but
these should weaken quickly thru the morning hours as the p/grad
loosens. An ulvl ridge will dominate the pattern Tue afternoon thru
most of Wed as a 1025 mb sfc high centers across the area. This
ridge will remain transient however, and a moist se/ly return flow
will develop by Wed afternoon.

Not expecting a good chance of precip Wed, but by the overnight
period, upper heights begin to fall from the west and pockets of
dPVA will traverse the FA. This upper energy will enhance topo
lift showers and with added pre-frontal lift moving in, rain
coverage will become more widespread across the FA thru daybreak.
The srn BR escarpment will see the higher rainfall totals during
this time with arnd an inch likely. Max temps will reach a few
degrees abv normal each day, while mins warm to abv normal thru
the period. The higher NC mtn peaks will likely experience mins
arnd or below freezing, however, which would support low- end
snow accums late Wed night.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 305 AM EST Monday...An active cold front will continue
crossing the FA Thu with the higher precip rates occurring in the
colder air behind the sfc convg zone. Still expecting a positive to
neutral upper trof supporting the front, which would help slow
relatively colder Canadian air into the NC mtns Thu evening. Upper
energy will be quite strong and the deep lift along with steep lapse
rates could generate a period of -snsh outside the mtns Thu night.
Soundings at KHKY and areas to the south and east go deeply below
freezing during this time, yet the sfc layer looks too dry currently
for any snow accum east of the NC fthills and extreme NE GA.

Across the NC mtns, moisture will become limited as thickness levels
drop, however, advisory level snow looks to be probable. Confidence
in this overall pattern has increased a little as the GFS ensembles
are showing less spread, yet with the slower ECMWF and CMC op models
lingering precip longer, there remains the possibility of higher snow
totals and possibly light snow accums east of the higher terrain.
Light wrap around snow showers shud continue across the far wrn NC
mtns thru Fri before the fcst area comes under the influence of
deeply dry hipres into Sun. The period will begin a little warmer than
normal then drop arnd 10 degrees below normal behind the front Fri
and Sat.

.AVIATION /18Z MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
At KCLT and elsewhere: VFR through the period at all TAF sites. The
passage of a reinforcing cold front will leave us with a wind
forecast for the next 24 hours, but a stout one at that. Winds
increase from the WSW with occasional gusts later this afternoon,
but should come around to NW or W across the higher terrain. Very
strong winds will move overhead behind the secondary cold front
after about 03Z to 06Z. Right now, it doesn't appear that we will
be able to mix deep enough to tap the stronger winds outside
the mtns, so only KAVL gets the wind gusts above 30kt. There
could be a low level wind shear at that location around daybreak
assuming the stronger winds don't mix all the way down to the
valley floor. The strong winds aloft will move off to the east and
weaken after sunrise, so that by the time we start to mix outside
the mtns, there is only a brief window of opportunity to see any
operationally significant gusts. Wind direction should veer around
to WNW everywhere by mid-morning Tuesday. By 19Z or so, the wind
should settle down to under 10kt.

Outlook: VFR conditions will continue through mid-week. A strong
and moist cold front, with associated widespread restrictions,
will arrive in the area on Thursday and move east on Friday.

...PATCHY DENSE FOG WILL CONTINUE TO AFFECT PARTS OF THE WESTERN
CAROLINAS AND NORTHEAST GEORGIA THIS MORNING...

Several locations across the western Upstate, northeast Georgia,
and the mountains and foothills of North Carolina continue to be
blanketed by fog this morning. The visibility was hovering near
one-quarter mile in several locations, but especially near lakes
and rivers. In the mountain valleys, temperatures remain below 32
degrees, so the patchy dense fog may freeze on contact with cold
surfaces. The fog will be quite variable and may change rapidly
over short distances.

Use caution if traveling. Allow extra travel time and stopping
distance. Use your low beam headlights and fog lamps. The fog
will gradually dissipate through mid- morning.
