.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front will cross the region from the west today, followed by
a strong upper-level disturbance this evening. Dry high pressure
will then return to the area on Sunday, but with another rapidly
moving cold front approaching the region Monday and passing east
of the area on Tuesday. Temperatures will warm from the middle to
latter part of next week under generally dry high pressure. Moisture
will begin returning to the southeast on Friday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 335 AM EST Saturday: With this forecast package, a High Wind
Warning, Wind Advisory, and Winter Weather Advisory have been issued
for portions of the NC mountains. These hazards will go into effect
later today, continuing through the forecast period. The High Wind
Watch is no longer in effect. Localized flooding concerns continue
this morning across portions of northeast GA and the southwestern
portions of the Upstate - see flood advisories for more information.
With a recently passed cold front to the east, situated along the
Carolinas coast, and another cold front just to the west, now moving
through the TN Valley, flooding, high winds, and winter weather
impacts are on tap for the near term forecast period.

Conditions are mild and damp this morning, as SW flow continues to
pump in moisture across the area ahead of an approaching cold front,
allowing for showers to propagate northeastward through the area.
Given the rainfall observed over the past 24 hours, additional
rainfall is impacting ongoing localized flooding across the Upstate,
as area streams continue to swell. Rainfall rates have been fairly
light through the overnight hours, however, latest radar trends
depict slightly higher amounts moving into the area attm.

For later this morning, expect precipitation to taper off across
northeast GA and the Upstate as deep upper troughing upstream drives
a cold front through the area. Precipitation may linger across the
NW Piedmont/northern foothills into this evening, but as drier air
infiltrates into the area, QPF amounts essentially drop to zero
later this afternoon. As for the mountains, wrap around moisture
will allow for precipitation to linger through into Sunday morning.
This available moisture combined with CAA will allow for a
transition from all rain to snow later today, with all snow expected
tonight tonight. In addition to NW flow snow, the tightening
pressure gradient will allow for increasing gusty NW winds across
the FA, with advisory/warning criteria expected to be met for the
mountains. Gusty winds across the rest of the FA will dissipate by
tonight. Information on wind hazards and winter weather hazards are
noted below. Max temperatures today will be early across the
mountains, as temperatures this afternoon will begin to fall as the
cold front pushes through. Temperatures just outside of the
mountains will only climb a few degrees from their current values,
while further southeastward towards the Midlands, temperatures will
rise into the lower 60s. Overnight low temperatures will drop to
below 30 degrees across the mountains, with lower 30s elsewhere.

Wind Hazards: As deep upper troughing pushes the cold front through
our area today, CAA/tightening pressure gradient will allow for
increasing gusty winds today into tonight, with the higher gusts
expected this evening through into Sunday morning. Looking at
guidance cross sections, it's suggested that mixing could
potentially tap into the 50 kt 850mb jet in some areas, including
Asheville, spreading gusts across the mountain valleys. Thus, have
opted to expand portions of the wind hazards to the valleys as well,
instead of limiting it to the higher elevations. For the French
Broad Valley along with the mountain zones of Caldwell, Burke, and
McDowell counties, the wind advisory is county-wide. For the
southern mountains, the wind advisory is in effect for the higher
elevations above 3500 ft. The High Wind Warning is in effect for
Avery, Mitchell and Yancey (previous High Wind Watch area).

Winter Weather: Latest guidance continues to suggest higher QPF
amounts along the TN border this afternoon through tonight as the
colder air infiltrates in. As a result, snow accumulation amounts
look to average around two inches mainly along the TN border, while
the higher elevations in Swain and Haywood counties could see snow
accumulation amounts ranging from 6 to 8 inches right on the border.
The higher elevations in Yancey county (including Mt. Mitchell)
could see 3 to 5 inches as well. Any changes in expected QPF
amounts/onset of colder air, could alter these snowfall amounts.
Temperatures across areas that observe snow will remain well below
freezing tonight through late morning on Sunday. Thus, motorists
are urged to use caution while traveling as area roadways and
overpasses may become slippery overnight through late Sunday
morning. Reduced visibilities may be possible with the combination
of gusty winds and falling snow.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 300 AM EST Saturday: Any lingering upslope moisture into
the western NC mountains will quickly diminish Sunday morning,
with no additional western mountain snow accumulations expected
after daybreak. The pressure gradient will temporarily relax
midday, allowing the wind hazards to abate by around noon, but
then the gradient will tighten back up across the northern Blue
Ridge area Sunday night between high pressure over Tennessee and
lee troughing east of the mountains. This could permit another
round of Wind Advisories for portions of the high terrain Sunday
night. Otherwise, a transition back to a zonal upper flow pattern
will occur through Sunday night, with lower-level WNW flow producing
downslope warming and drying east of the mountains.

A shortwave developing over the Great Plains on Monday will
amplify as it crosses the Ohio Valley Monday night and approaches
the Appalachian mountain chain on Tuesday. Profiles are marginal
for some quickly transitioning mixed ptypes at onset and this
will be need to be watched closely. However, QPF for the Monday
night/early Tuesday period looks rather limited along the weakly
activating warm front, so no wintry accumulations are currently
expected. Otherwise, the system will transition quickly through
the region daytime Tuesday, with storm total QPF limited to 1/4
to 1/2 inch in the mountains, with generally around 1/10 inch in
piedmont areas. Temperatures will run slightly above climo through
the period.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 300 AM EST Saturday: Limited northwest flow moisture in the
post-frontal cold advection could wring out scattered snow showers
in the normal upslope prone mountain locations late Tuesday/Tuesday
night. The cold advection gradient flow could once again produce
some Advisory level gusts across the high terrain Tuesday night
into Wednesday. Otherwise, heights will build over the southeast
Wednesday through Thursday with surface high pressure migrating
across the Appalachians to the coast.

The 500 mb pattern will amplify strongly on Friday as a trough
emerges from the Rockies while heights build over the eastern
seaboard. Model solutions vary with the handling of the upstream
trough, with the ECM/ensembles camp slower and more active with
the southern stream. Will thus be slow to ramp pops back up over
the southeast in the developing southerly return flow. Temperatures
will steadily warm through late week.

.AVIATION /09Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
At KCLT and elsewhere: Widespread MVFR/LIFR prevails at all TAF
sites this morning, with the exception of KAVL where VFR
prevails attm, as areas of fog, low cigs, and showers continue
to affect the area. Latest radar depicts showers moving towards
KAVL, which may reduce visibilities. Do anticipate flight
restrictions to gradually improve to MVFR this morning, as drier
air infiltrates into the area. After daybreak, low cigs are
progged to scatter out, allowing for the return of VFR, as the
cold front pushes through. With colder air infiltrating in,
lingering moisture could bring snow showers to the mountains
(possibly KAVL) later today and tonight, and isolated showers to
KHKY and KCLT. For now, have left any mention of snow showers
for KAVL due to lower confidence (though a dusting will be
possible), with VCSH in other TAFs. Will reassess with next set
of TAFs. Accumulating snow is likely across the higher mountain
elevations later today and tonight. SW winds through the morning
hours will remain AOB 5 kts, gradually becoming WNW this
afternoon, with gusts expected.

Outlook: Rain and snow chances return early next week, which may
bring flight restrictions to the TAF sites.
