.SYNOPSIS...
Cool and dry high pressure will build into the region today, and
linger through the end of the work week. A cold front will bring a
return of rain chances over the weekend, followed by a moderate high
moving into the area early next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 330 AM Wed: A cold front extends attm from the Northeast
CONUS, through the foothills east of the Appalachians, to the
central Gulf Coast. A broad upper trough is centered west of this
feature, with an embedded shortwave axis along the Ohio River. DPVA
downstream of the shortwave has activated the front to our north,
evidenced by light precip from VA to NJ. There remains a chance
for precip to develop as that wave swings east early this morning,
though model QPF remains paltry in our CWA. Chances have been
lowered with this update, and now mainly confined to our NC Piedmont
zones. Northwest flow is occurring near the NC/TN border, though
low level moisture will soon be exhausted there. An isolated rain
or snow shower could occur at the high mtn elevations, dependent
on sfc temp. Virtually no snow is expected to accumulate; a dusting
could occur in the most favored upslope areas.

The cold front will settle south and east later this morning, and
there appears too little moisture for the shortwave to work with on
its own. Thus PoPs will be kept below the mentionable threshold
once the front exits the Piedmont. Skies will trend clearer,
though some occasional midlevel clouds could be seen. Max temps
will be 10 to 15 degrees below normal despite sunshine. Mostly clear
skies will persist tonight. As calm high pressure spreads in, good
radiative conditions likely will allow temps to crater in outlying
areas. Though dewpoints will be low, soil and vegetative moisture
should still be pretty high following the rain Sunday/Sunday
night. As temps fall as much as 10 degrees below normal--mostly
into the 30s across western NC--areas of frost likely will form in
the colder areas of the Piedmont, where the frost-freeze program is
active. Thus we will hoist a Frost Advisory for the foothills and
I-40 corridor, excluding the warmer Charlotte metro for now. Day
shift will have a chance to re-evaluate the areal coverage.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
As of 300 AM Wednesday: The short term looks quiet, with seasonably
cool and dry high pressure building in from the west under a flat
flow aloft. Temps will be on a warming trend, with highs back into
the mid to upper 60s on Thursday and lower to mid 70s on Friday
(cooler in the mountains). Skies should be mostly clear Thursday
thru Thursday night, but increasing mid to high clouds expected
Friday, and especially Friday night, as the next storm system moves
into the Mid-MS Valley. The low will track into the OH Valley Friday
night, and could bring a few showers to the TN/NC border, but
otherwise the short term should be dry. Lows will be a bit chilly
again Thursday night (but not expecting widespread frost/freeze
concerns). Then much warmer Friday night due to increasing clouds
and low-level WAA ahead of the next system.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 330 AM Wednesday: A fast, relatively flat upper flow pattern
will exist across the CONUS to start the medium range, and that
makes it difficult to time individual impulses crossing the forecast
area. The 00z ECMWF and 00z GFS seem to be in better agreement for
the weekend's forecast.

The first wave crosses the area on Saturday, bringing a brief shot
of showers with a weak fropa. Saturday night into Sunday may
actually be dry now per the latest guidance. But this is a big shift
from previous runs. The next wave ejects out of a closed low over
California, and crosses the area on Monday. The associated low with
the second wave is more suppressed along the Gulf Coast on the GFS,
while the EC brings a deepening low along the I-20 corridor. With
all that said, the PoPs each period Saturday thru Monday have below
average confidence with them. At least temps look to be near normal
for highs and above normal for lows.

Split flow continues beyond Monday, with modest sfc high
pressure building in under confluent flow aloft. Dry weather and
warming temps are in the forecast, but again, confidence is a
bit below average.

.AVIATION /08Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
At KCLT and elsewhere: Moist midlevels ahead of an approaching
shortwave trough, and a lingering frontal zone, will result in
bands of VFR clouds over the area this morning. Light precip
may occur at high elevations of the mtns and in the Piedmont,
but chances are small enough at the sites to omit it from all
TAFs, and impact would be small anyway. Cigs will be variable
between 060 and 150 until the shortwave and front exit the area
during the day. FEW-SCT clouds at similar levels will be seen thru
tonight, so VFR should continue. Winds will be mainly northerly,
with occasional gusts this morning as cooler air filters into the
area behind the front. A flip closer to W or even SW is possible
for a time this aftn.

Outlook: Expect dry weather to maintain VFR conditions until the
weekend, when another storm system will increase chances for rain
and restrictions.
