A few rain/snow showers are moving through Southern Michigan on the
tail end of the departing low early this morning. These should end
around daybreak as ridging quickly lowers inversion heights and caps
boundary layer convection at about 3,000 feet / -7 C according to
the HRRR, though other mesoscale models have the cap lower and
warmer. There may be some breaks in the clouds by afternoon, but
for the most part, low clouds will be common and temperatures will
be in the familiar mid to upper 30s.

-- Mild then wild --

Both "mild" and "wild" could be an overstatement, other winters
considered, but at least there's some change in the weather on the
way Wednesday into Christmas. On the heels of Tuesday's high
pressure will be a sprawling Midwest low moving toward Lake Superior
on Wednesday. Winds from the south become breezy Tuesday night, and
gusty on Wednesday. Gusts 30-40 mph are possible as temperatures in
the 40s to perhaps lower 50s advect into the area.

The cold front moves through Wednesday night, and arctic-sourced air
flows into the region. Light rain Wednesday evening may change to
snow overnight prior to ending. Support for lake-effect snow will
likely begin Thursday morning and continue through Christmas.
Several inches of snow is certainly possible in the NW-flow lake
effect belts, and the cold temperatures would be enough for moderate
impacts to road conditions.

Issued at 1247 AM EST Tue Dec 22 2020

Ceilings/visibility may go temporary IFR with showers near JXN and
MOP/RQB over the next hour or two, but generally MVFR ceilings
will prevail for much of tonight and Tuesday. Showers near JXN
have been producing a rain/snow mix, but it's more of a drizzle in
central Michigan locations. Precipitation will diminish around 12
Z and the rest of the day will be dry (can't rule out a stray
shower) with MVFR clouds hanging around until about 00 Z. Winds
shift south Tuesday night and low level wind shear may need to be
introduced into the TAFs after 06 Z.

Hazardous conditions for small craft will diminish this afternoon
but re-establish late this evening as winds from the south increase.
Gusts to gale force are likely late Tuesday night into Wednesday
evening. The southerly winds will push water levels higher in
northern Lake Michigan, and as such, lakeshore flooding is not much
concern along our part of the shore. Dune erosion may be of some
concern, especially north of Muskegon.
