Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Green Bay WI 1243 PM CDT Sat Apr 11 2020 Updated aviation portion for 18Z TAF issuance .SHORT TERM...Today...Tonight...and Sunday Issued at 357 AM CDT Sat Apr 11 2020 Mostly clear skies and cool temperatures were noted across the region this morning as a ridge of high pressure drifted through the western Great Lakes. The ridge will slide east this morning, allowing a low pressure system to approach from the southwest. The initial wave from this system does not look to affect the area until later tonight, with mainly dry conditions expected for much of the day. Some rain could impact the southern cwa during the afternoon, however very dry air in place will make precipitating a bit difficult, therefore pushed off POPs until later periods for the most part. The delay in precipitation will allow warmer afternoon temperatures as warm air advection allows highs to soar into the middle to upper 50s away from the lakeshore, with some readings around 60 possible across central and east-central Wisconsin. Closer to the lakeshore highs will be limited to the 40s. The first wave from the approaching low will impact the region tonight as the low itself organizes across the central Plains with support from mid level frontogenesis and a PV anomaly. Overcoming the low level dry air will still be an issue, therefore will lower POPs in the evening and keep POPs fairly low across the north away from the best lift and moisture. Precipitation type tonight will mainly be rain across central and east-central Wisconsin, with some rain or snow across north-central Wisconsin if precipitation falls over this area. The main brunt of this system will start to impact the region on Sunday as mid level isentropic lift, frontogenesis, and a fairly strong PV anomaly track ahead of the surface low which will move east towards the mid Mississippi Valley. Precipitation type should mainly start out as rain across much of the area, with a mix of rain and snow across the north. Later in the afternoon the aforementioned dry air will still be in place, which will actually help turn some of the precipitation over to snow across the far north with a mix of rain and snow across central and northeast Wisconsin as temperatures wet-bulb given the low dew points. Temperatures on Sunday are expected to be several degrees below the NBM given the amount of cloud cover and precipitation that will be occurring, especially during the afternoon as wet-bulbing occurs, so trended towards the cooler models with this forecast. Highs on Sunday are expected to range from the upper 30s across north-central, with highs in the lower 40s across portions of central and east-central Wisconsin. In addition to the precipitation, a tight pressure gradient ahead of the approaching low will cause northeast winds to increase to 15 to 25 knots on Sunday. The increased wind could cause some lakeshore flooding concerns along beaches facing northeast along the Bay of Green Bay and the Lake Michigan shoreline. .LONG TERM...Sunday Night Through Friday Issued at 357 AM CDT Sat Apr 11 2020 The intense late season storm system will be the focus of the long term forecast as well, as it continues into the beginning of the work week. Sunday night into Monday...The bulk of the snow is expected to fall during this timeframe, overnight into Monday. Although models differ on the exact track and amounts still, currently expect the track of the heaviest snow to cross central Wisconsin and head northwards, remaining northwest of the Fox Valley. A winter storm watch is in effect for the areas that will most likely see the heaviest snow totals as forecast currently, which remains in good alignment with the previous forecast updates. That said, if rain changes over to snow more quickly and the surface low takes a more southerly track, there will be enough dynamics at play to bring additional snowfall to the Fox Valley as well. In addition to the heavy snow totals being a concern, winds will pick up on the lee side of this system Monday afternoon as the pressure gradient tightens. Winds at 850mb approach 50kts, bringing a good chance to mix gusts up to 40 mph or greater down to the surface. Blowing snow will be possible across the area, along with potential flooding along the lakeshore areas. The heavy wet snow and winds may also damage power lines in the area. This will likely be a high impact system, so stay tuned for updates as the locations of the biggest impacts may still shift! Rest of the extended...Beyond the major late season snow storm, upper level troughing will continue across the upper Central Plains. Cold air will dominate the region, keeping temperatures well below normal. A few additional rounds of snow showers will be possible through the week, but nothing on the scale of the system at the end of this weekend. && .AVIATION...for 18Z TAF Issuance Issued at 1242 PM CDT Sat Apr 11 2020 VFR flying conditions are expected this afternoon and evening, then a transition to MVFR conditions will occur as a low pressure system approaches from the west and cloud bases lower. There is a chance of light rain showers starting late this evening for the east- central WI TAF sites (KGRB, KATW, KMTW). Widespread precipitation arrives throughout Sunday morning and will vary from mainly snow in northern Wisconsin, mixed precipitation in central WI, and rain in east- central WI. Winds will also increase Sunday morning, with northeast gusts to around 20 knots. As the low pressure system strengthens further deterioration of conditions is expected Sunday afternoon. && .MARINE...
