Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Green Bay WI 1147 AM CST Sat Feb 8 2020 Updated aviation portion for 18Z TAF issuance .SHORT TERM...Today...Tonight...and Sunday Issued at 411 AM CST Sat Feb 8 2020 Main concern in the short-term is the winter system which will impact the forecast area Sunday. Surface analysis at 09Z indicated a weak trough was draped from east to west across the central part of the state. Radar and surface obs showed a few light snow showers or flurries were still occurring along and near this boundary in central and east- central WI. Dry high pressure tries to nudge into the area today, which will bring an end to most of the light snow showers; however, kept some flurries across central and east- central through this afternoon as some weak WAA around 850mb and a piece of shortwave energy pass overhead. Meanwhile, any cloud-free spots filled in overnight, and expect mostly cloudy skies today. The cloud cover will keep temps down today, with highs in the 20s. Tonight, generally quiet conditions are expected with some clearing for a brief period as a wedge of drier air advances across the area. Lows will range from 5 to 10 degrees in the Northwoods, to the low and middle teens elsewhere. On Sunday, energy currently coming onshore along the Pacific northwest will advance from the Plains towards southern WI. WAA ahead of the surface system, along with added lift from the LFQ of the upper jet, will aid in developing snow across the area Sunday morning. Snow may start as early as 6AM in the far southwest forecast area (Wood Co.) with the most substantial snow falling from about 9AM to 6PM across the area, and then winding down through the evening. Confidence is medium high on snowfall amounts, and therefore issued appropriate headlines this morning. The most uncertainly lies in central Wisconsin where totals could still vary if the system tracks a little farther south. Locations in the Advisory are expected to get between 3 to 6 inches, with up to 8 inches in the Watch. Across the far north snowfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches are expected, and therefore no headlines were issues. && .LONG TERM...Sunday Night Through Friday Issued at 411 AM CST Sat Feb 8 2020 The latest ensemble means continue to indicate that split flow will be present across North America over the next week. Our weather will mostly be dominated by the northern stream and cut off from deeper moisture over the Gulf of Mexico. Although we are still monitoring the potential for the northern fringes of a southern stream system to impact the region during the middle of next week, forecast concerns mostly revolve around periodic light snow chances. Sunday night through Monday night...Snow will be continuing over northeast Wisconsin on Sunday evening, heaviest over the Door Peninsula where additional accumulations may reach up to an inch. Most of the snow should be ending by midnight as low pressure moves into Lower Michigan. May even see some clearing skies late as the surface ridge axis moves east and into the state. Quiet weather remains on tap for Monday thanks to high pressure. Clouds will return on Monday night ahead of the next shortwave. Perhaps a few snow showers are possible across far northern WI, but most of the area should remain dry. Rest of the forecast...The chance of a snow shower or two will continue into Tuesday morning across far northern WI. Most of the region should be dry until the next arctic front arrives on Wednesday. This front will provide another chance of light snow showers at times, generally on Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday night. A brief shot of arctic air will follow in the wake of this front to end the week. && .AVIATION...for 18Z TAF Issuance Issued at 1147 AM CST Sat Feb 8 2020 Still dealing with MVFR cigs and scattered flurries across central Wisconsin this afternoon. Anticipate cigs becoming VFR late this afternoon as a weak ridge of high pressure moves into the region. A brief clearing trend is expected through at least mid-evening, however visible satellite imagery shows the leading edge of lower VFR cig clouds pushing east and should make it into northeast WI late evening or shortly after midnight. Main focus remains on accumulating snow on Sunday that will overspread the area mid to late morning. Flying conditions to quickly deteriorate once the snow begins with cigs dropping to IFR and vsbys in the LIFR category.
