Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Green Bay WI 337 AM CST Thu Jan 2 2020 Forecast discussion for routine morning forecast issuance .SYNOPSIS... Issued at 334 AM CST Thu Jan 2 2020 Mild and fairly quiet mid-winter weather is expected through the weekend and into early next week. The main westerlies from the Pacific split upon reaching North America. The dominant branch of the flow was fairly low-amplitude and resided across the northern CONUS and southern Canada. A weaker and more amplified branch of the flow was across northern Mexico and the southern CONUS. A third branch of the flow was well to the north over high latitudes, confining bitterly cold air to northern Canada. The primary change to the pattern during the forecast period will be for the southern two branches of the flow to consolidate into a single broad, progressive band of flow and then to deamplify to a nearly zonal regime by early next week. Some amplification is likely thereafter. The high latitude branch of the flow will also slowly lose its identity. That will allow colder air to expand south across Canada, though that likely won't impact the forecast area until after the end of the period. Temperatures will remain considerably above normal into early next week, then probably trend back closer to normal. There will be multiple opportunities for light precipitation, but at this point it seems unlikely any of those will result in substantial amounts, so precipitation totals for the period will probably be AOB normal. && .SHORT TERM...Today...Tonight...and Friday Issued at 334 AM CST Thu Jan 2 2020 Relatively quiet weather is anticipated during the short-term portion of the forecast, though there were still a few forecast issues to resolve. A mid-level shortwave was advancing east from the Plains early this morning, with additional small/weak shortwaves behind it. The lead feature was resulting in a gradually organizing baroclinic-leaf type satellite feature moving into Wisconsin. A dry layer of air was still in place below the incoming middle clouds. The models indicated most of the light precipitation falling from the middle clouds will evaporate (sublimate) in the low-level dry air before reaching the ground. By the time deep saturation occurs, the best lift will be pulling off to the east. Still, the increasing returns on area radars suggested it would be worthwhile to carry chance PoPs over mainly central through northeast Wisconsin for a time this morning, with lower/trace-type PoPs across the rest of the area. Tapered PoPs back down from the mid-day into the afternoon. Then expect mainly dry conditions (though some flurries are possible) through Friday. Any precipitation from the next significant shortwave heading toward the area should hold off until Friday night. Once low levels saturate, suspect it won't be easy to break out of the low clouds. Trended more pessimistic with skycon for later today into tonight. Stayed close to a blend of top performing guidance products for temps, but trended toward having a smaller diurnal temperature range due to the expected lingering cloud cover. .LONG TERM...Friday Night Through Wednesday Issued at 334 AM CST Thu Jan 2 2020 Forecast challenges mainly revolve around snow chances through the period, particularly on Sunday. Medium range models continue to have their differences with the clipper on Sunday, so will take a multi-model blend to mitigate these differences. Friday night through Saturday night...Upper troughing will be moving into the western Great Lakes on Friday night, but the latest models show shortwave energy bypassing north and south of the region. On the northeast fringe of one of these shortwaves, it's possible that light snow could clip central and east-central WI, but most snowfall is expected to slide southwest of the area. But because of flow off Lake Superior, skies will likely remain mostly cloudy. The upper trough will pass to the east on Saturday, and a surface ridge axis will then move into the state. Should therefore see increasing sunshine on Saturday with temps slightly above normal. Clipper energy will then move into the northern Mississippi Valley on Saturday night on the cyclonic side of a 130 kt jet streak. Clouds will return ahead of this system, with a chance of light snow moving into north-central WI by late Saturday night. Rest of the forecast...The quick hitting clipper will then scoot over northern WI on Sunday. Most of the snowfall is projected to fall during the morning when a band of mid-level fgen slides across northern parts of the state. Because of the fast moving nature and general lack of moisture, thinking this could turn into a 1 to 3 inch snowfall event, highest near the U.P. border. Some snow showers could linger over far northern WI into Sunday night, otherwise, west winds will be quite gusty Sunday into Monday which could lead to some blowing and drifting of the new snowfall. Yet another clipper cold bring light snowfall on Tuesday, but confidence on the details is very low by this point in the forecast. Then dry weather is expected for next Wednesday.
