Smoke and haze from wildfires out west will continue to impact the
region. The HRRR is doing a fairly representative job of picking
up on the smoke pushing into the region from Colorado. Have added
smoke to the forecast for today into this evening. Near critical
fire weather conditions are expected today and a Fire Weather
Watch will be in effect Saturday afternoon for counties along and
west of Highway 27.

Overview: Ridging aloft will prevail over the Central High Plains
through Saturday.. as Tropical Cyclone Delta moves ashore the
Louisiana Gulf Coast and tracks slowly northward into the Lower
MS River Valley.
With ridging aloft over the region, above normal temperatures and
dry conditions will persist. Aside from fluctuations in wind
speed/direction -- expect little change in sensible weather
conditions compared to previous days. See fire weather discussion
for information on the Fire Weather Watch in effect Saturday
afternoon for eastern CO and adjacent KS/NE border counties.
.LONG TERM...(Sunday through Thursday)

The main points of interest for the extended period are the
potential fire weather conditions Sunday afternoon and a slow
moving cold front with the potential for gusty to windy conditions
Sunday evening into the overnight hours.
Starting Sunday, guidance continues to show an advancing trough
towards the Central Plains. As the trough approaches an associated
SE moving cold front will sweep through the Tri-State area.
Timing has become more consistent with the front moving through NE
Colorado/NW Kansas during the evening hours. Rain chances have
been trending dryer across the majority of the CWA; I am still
going to leave the "higher" pops across the northern counties to
account for the slightly deeper track that ECMWF continues to
show. I continue to have increasing confidence about near critical
fire conditions especially along and west of the Kansas/Colorado
border. RH values are currently forecasted in the lower teens
across E Colorado and NW Kansas along with gusty to windy
conditions continue plausible as well especially behind the front.
My confidence has increased on the possibility of gusty to windy
conditions as the front moves to the SE across the area; with the
greatest chance of higher wind gusts just as the front moves
through any specific area. GFS soundings show window of
opportunity during the late evening where wind gusts may exceed
50mph especially across NE Colorado/ NW Kansas where the higher
areas of 850mb winds exist with the storm system. With the
consistently dryer guidance there may be a chance of blowing dust
associated with the front and behind the front during the evening
and overnight.
Monday, gusty winds are still possible behind the storm system as
high pressure moves back over the area. For the middle portion of
the week calmer conditions are looking likely before another cold
front moves back into the area towards the latter portion of the
extended period. The guidance continues to vary on the timing and
track of the 2nd system for the back part of the week. I feel any
chance for measurable rainfall at this time continues to be low as
dry air in the low levels continues to persist.
The Tri-State area will have temperatures in the 80's on Sunday
before the passage of the front. Lows Sunday night into Monday
morning will drop into the mid 30's across NE Colorado and NW
Kansas. Monday highs will be in the 60's across the entire area and
gradually warm back into the upper 70's to low 80's midweek before
falling again into the 60's on Thursday and Friday with the late
week front. Lows Friday and Saturday morning may be capable of a
hard freeze across the western portion of the CWA as widespread
freezing temperatures look like a possibility with increased CAA.

Smoke continues to filter into the region this morning from the west
where wildfires are ongoing. Smoke and haze will lower visibilities
slightly through the afternoon, though widespread sub-VFR conditions
are not anticipated at this time.
At KGLD, smoke is expected to diminish this evening. Winds will
become northerly around 9kts by 20Z. Winds will continue to
decrease going into the evening and overnight hours, becoming light
and variable.
At KMCK, smoke and haze will persist in the area through late this
afternoon. Northwest winds will persist through around 05Z,
becoming light and variable.
