The upper ridge is currently overhead and will continue to drift
eastward today allowing southwesterly flow to become established. A
strong upper low is moving into the Pacific Northwest and increasing
the pressure gradient over the Great Basin. Some of this enhanced
flow will nose over western portions of the forecast area today.
Seasonably warm temperatures upwards of 10 degrees above normal
within this regime will cause deep mixing this afternoon. As a
result these stronger winds will have a chance to reach the surface.
The lack of moisture advection means that afternoon RH will drop into
the teens and single digits. The biggest uncertainty is that the
wind speeds will hover right around the Red Flag criteria. The area
that has the best potential for critical conditions will be west-
central Colorado and east-central Utah where there is currently a
Red Flag Warning. There have not been any significant changes in
the forecast to make any updates to that warning at this point.
Just know that brief localized critical conditions are possible
outside of the warning.
Temperatures are also the major story - we will take a run at the
warmest day of the year so far in most locations given this
southwesterly warm air advection. There is an outside chance Grand
Junction may see their first 90 degree day of the year, with mid
80s in Montrose, Cortez and Durango, and low 90s in Utah Canyon
Country. Some cirrus clouds may start to build over the area this
afternoon, which could keep things cooler by a few degrees, but we
are not expecting a dense cloud deck to limit surface heating for
a significant amount of time. Tomorrow the upper low begins to move
further inland allowing the tight pressure gradient to overspread
a bigger portion of the forecast area. Still looking at the
development of a dry slot that will likely mix down to the surface
as temperatures potentially reach a few degrees warmer than today.
Higher confidence in the drier air mass and higher wind speeds
means that we will upgrade the Fire Watch. Just about anywhere
fuels are critical will have a Red Flag. The strong southwesterly
flow will remain over the area tomorrow evening, which could keep
Red Flag conditions going longer than the typical diurnal trends.

On Tuesday, the upper low begins to track over the Great Basin
placing the midlevel jet directly overhead. This will result in wind
speeds that could reach 40-50 mph in spots especially the western
half of the CWA. The models continue to show hints of Gulf moisture
trying to sneak in here within the strong southerly flow. Although
the latest runs have trended drier and are keeping the desert air
in place. This means confidence in widespread critical fire
weather conditions is increasing. If the moisture does make it
here it will be in the midlevels and may only result in high
elevation showers along the Divide. If could also result in virga
enhanced wind gusts in the valleys on top of the already windy
surface conditions. Dry thunderstorms would also be a concern if
this moisture actually materializes.
On Wednesday the trough axis swings across the region although it
appears there will be limited moisture present. A cold front
looks to accompany the trough bringing cooler temperatures to the
area. However we will still may manage to get RH values below Red
Flag criteria over a majority of the same locations. One thing is
certain that the pressure gradient will relax within the trough
axis so wind gusts are expected to be lower than Tuesday, but
still just enough. May wait a few more model cycles before issuing
products, because there is an outside chance Pacific moisture in
the post-frontal air mass could be support precipitation in the
CWA. Models are hinting that precip chances are better in the
higher terrain across northeast Utah and north central Colorado
Wednesday afternoon. Later in the week things look fairly quiet
with temperatures closer to normal, but each day will trend warmer.
As another upper low tracks over the Pacific Northwest increased
southwest flow returns. By Saturday models depict it over the
northern Great Basin, but then solutions diverge after that.
Unfortunately, very little precipitation and elevated fire danger
looks to be the outcome from this system at first glance.

Southwest flow increases this afternoon ahead of a deepening low
pressure system out west. East-central Utah and the Paradox Valley
stand the best chance for widespread critical fire weather
conditions, where a Red Flag Warning has been issued, with other
areas seeing localized conditions at times. Critical fire weather
conditions become widespread by Monday and Tuesday due to stronger
southwest flow and very dry conditions. The Fire Weather Watch on
Monday has been upgraded due to increasing confidence. It should
be noted that winds look even stronger on Tuesday, with some areas
potentially seeing wind gusts reaching 40 to 50 mph. Above normal
warmth continues through Tuesday, with a cool down expected mid
week as the western low tracks across the area. Despite the cooler
temperatures, Wednesday still looks to remain dry and breezy so
