Some notes regarding this evening through Tuesday night:

1) Just updated/refreshed our Hazardous Weather Outlook (HWOGID)
with our latest expectations for thunderstorm/high wind/flood
potential hazards through the next 24-36 hours. Please refer to
this for the basics.

2) Needless to say, our coverage area (CWA) clearly dodged the
proverbial bullet late this afternoon-evening, as the narrow
corridor of severe storms along the sharp surface front focused
just BARELY west-northwest of our domain over the WFO LBF area.
This was always a possibility that we'd miss out on this round of
severe storms, and major kudos to recent runs of the HRRRV4 for
suggesting this scenario 24+ hours ago.

3) Going forward, we cannot rule out the possibility of a few
strong to marginally-severe storms eventually getting into mainly
the western half of our CWA mainly well-after midnight, but the
overall-greatest chance for a few severe storms in our CWA during
the next 24 hours will focus Tuesday afternoon-early evening,
especially within our eastern half. Will defer to incoming night
shift to expand more on this potential.

4) Our CWA-wide High Wind Watch and the Flash Flood Watch for some
of our southeastern Nebraska counties continue as originally
posted by day shift. With the combo of much cooler air, widespread
rain and very strong north winds, we cannot possibly overstate
how DRASTICALLY different Tuesday-Tues night will feel compared to
the unseasonably-hot first 8 days of the month!

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Tuesday Night)

Active weather for the first part of the week...

The pattern aloft featured low pressure centered in MT, with the
upper trough extending south thru UT/AZ, leading to southerly flow
across the plains states while tropical depression Cristobal was
lifting north from LA into AR. At the surface, low pressure was
centered in Central SD and SE CO, with a cold front oriented
north/south across western Neb, just to our west from KANW to KIML
into NW KS. The front has remained fairly stationary today and
convergence along the boundary will lead to convection this evening.
High resolution models are in decent agreement with storms
developing around 6-7 pm time frame along the western fringes of our
cwa. Strong to severe storms remain possible along the frontal zone
given instability/MLCAPE around 2500 j/kg combined with shear of
30-40kts and storms will bring a primary hail/wind threat,
however an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out. Storm motion is
to the north/northeast around 30-40 mph and the convection which
develops this evening is expected to focus across central and
western Neb heading into tonight.

The progression of the upper trough and cold front across our region
has slowed, now arriving during the Tuesday time frame as energy
in the western trough splits, with a closed low pressure system
developing near the four corners region tonight, with this upper
low crossing thru KS Tuesday/Tuesday night. Showers and storms may
move in from western Neb towards Tuesday morning, with
redevelopment of storms expected along the cold front, mainly for
areas east of Highway 281. Tuesday will see a continued threat for
severe weather, but this time the focus for severe weather will
be across our eastern zones (along/east of Highway 281), given
boundary location...instability around 2000 j/kg and 40kts of
shear. Primary storm hazards will again be a hail/wind threat
however could see a tor potential in vcnty of the surface low
tracking north along the front and edging into northeast KS.

In addition to severe weather, the storms will be capable of
producing heavy rainfall as precipitable water values average an
inch to an inch and a half Tuesday into Tuesday night. The rain is
expected to become widespread across our region Tuesday
aftn/night in increasing lift/dynamics as the upper low tracks
across KS, providing a swath of deformation/wrap around rainfall.
At this time, rainfall amounts are still forecast to range from 1
to 3 inches, but locally higher amounts are likely, especially in
thunderstorms. While conditions have dried out since our last
heavy rainfall events, areas of lowland/flash flooding remain
possible, along with rises in rivers and streams from runoff.
Have went ahead with a Flash Flood Watch Tuesday aftn/night for
our SE Neb counties where QPF of 2+ inches is forecast and 6-hour
county flash flood guidance averages 2-2.5 inches.

Wind, Wind & more Wind for Tuesday/Tuesday night! North winds
ramp up behind the cold front on Tuesday and they will be howling.
The surface cyclone deepens across KS and while there slight
differences on the strength of the low...most models deepen the
low to around 990mb. Winds above the surface will be intense, with
H85 winds progged between 50-70kts and winds this strong are on
the order of 4-5 standard deviations above normal and are the max
on the percentile spectrum of occurrence for this time of
year...meaning we just don't see winds this strong in June. The
winds will arrive west/east behind the boundary, ramping up thru
the day and remaining strong into Tuesday night. MOS guidance
reflects sustained north winds of 25 to 35 mph...and some of the
higher wind speeds aloft are expected to mix to the surface
bringing gusts of 55-65 mph. Due to these intense north winds,
have gone with a High Wind Watch for Tuesday/Tuesday night.

Temperatures...after a hot first week of June with high temps in the
90s...the hot pattern will break, with temps averaging in the
60s/70s the post frontal airmass. If cold front slows anymore, our
far southeast zones may top 80F Tuesday.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday)

The upper low exits to the east into MO Wednesday with any lingering
precip in our southeast zones tapering off pretty quickly in the
morning. In the wake of the active weather Tuesday, Wednesday will
seem much calmer, despite some still breezy NW winds.

Thereafter, have maintained a dry forecast through the outer
periods. Upper ridging will begin to build back across the interior
CONUS toward the latter part of the week and after a few 'cooler'
days, the heat will return over the weekend under the influence of
the ridge axis. Winds also look to steadily increase. A
progressing Pacific Northwest upper trough will break down the
ridge axis late in the weekend/early next week. There are some
model differences on whether or not we may see some convection
late Sunday, but will monitor trends for consistency before adding
pops just yet.

.AVIATION...(For the 06Z KGRI/KEAR TAFS through 06Z Wednesday)
Issued at 1259 AM CDT Tue Jun 9 2020

Significant wx: A lot going on in this TAF with VERY strong
winds, LLWS, tstms, IFR/MVFR cigs, and MVFR vsbys all concerns.

Thru 12Z: VFR. Marginal low level wind shear (LLWS) will continue
for another few hours, but sfc winds are remaining elevated around
15-18kt (with higher gusts), hence the reason the LLWS is
marginal. May see some iso to scat tstms try to develop toward
dawn, but low confidence and probably limited coverage, so
maintained VCTS for now.

12Z Tue to 06Z Wed: VFR to IFR then MVFR. Strong cold front
should arrive at EAR 12-13Z, and at GRI 14-15Z. Cigs will fall to
IFR and winds will incr from the N with the arrival of the front.
Pretty high confidence in a period of intense winds from about mid
afternoon thru midnight in which sustained winds will be 35-40kt,
with gusts 50-55kt. Shwrs will gradually incr thru the AM, with
scat-wdsprd rain/tstms for the aftn and eve, along with MVFR cigs,
and possibly for a time in the aftn, some MVFR vsbys.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for south central Nebraska and
portions of north central Kansas.

.DAY ONE...Overnight.

It appears that western portions of the outlook area narrowly
missed out on the risk for severe thunderstorms this evening, as
storms ended up focusing slightly farther off to the west and
northwest.

After midnight, and especially after 3 AM, some thunderstorm
activity is expected to move into, or develop directly over
portions of the outlook area. A few of these storms could be
strong to marginally-severe, mainly within counties west of
Highway 281, with the main threat being hail to around quarter
size and perhaps wind gusts of 50 to 60 MPH.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday.

Tuesday into Tuesday evening, thunderstorm chances exist across
the entire outlook area. Although a few marginally-severe storms
cannot be ruled out during the morning, the main threat for a few
severe thunderstorms will focus during the afternoon and early-
evening, especially within the eastern half of the outlook area.
The main threat with any potential severe storms will be hail to
around the size of ping pong balls and wind gusts of 60 MPH or
greater, although an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out. Also,
widespread rain will occur across the outlook area Tuesday into
Tuesday night, with many places forecast to receive 1 to 2
inches of rain, and localized higher amounts possible. A Flash
Flood Watch has been issued for some counties east of Highway 281
in Nebraska, which appear most favored to perhaps see up to around
3 inches. Please refer to the Flash Flood Watch statement for
more details.

In addition to any thunderstorm and flooding concerns Tuesday into
Tuesday night, the entire outlook area will be subject to very
strong north winds. A High Wind Watch has been issued for the
entire area due to the potential for gusts as high as 55 to 65
