Highlights/main points of the entire 7-day forecast:

- By FAR the main focus/time on this forecast shift was spent on
  the very first 24-30 hours, which will feature a blast of strong
  northwest winds area-wide (high confidence) and for especially
  Nebraska portions of our coverage area (CWA) a good chance of at
  least light snow accumulations, with areas north of I-80
  currently favored for amounts as high as 1-2" (medium-
  confidence). As a result, a combination of a High Wind Warning
  (CWA-wide starting either at midnight/6AM) and a Winter Weather
  Advisory for Nebraska counties north of Interstate 80 (starting
  at midnight) was issued this afternoon.

- More on this below, but easily the biggest
  uncertainty/dilemma/point of concern at this time is whether we
  are hitting the snow potential hard enough for late tonight into
  Wednesday daytime. While both snow chances (PoPs) and amounts
  themselves were raised modestly from previous forecast
  (especially north of I-80), a few recent models (including 12Z
  ECMWF/18Z NAM) suggest our snow amounts might need to be raised
  a bit more. Stay tuned for at least minor (perhaps somewhat
  noticeable?) tweaks to snow amounts from the upcoming evening-
  overnight shifts.

- With so much focus on the first 24-30 hours of the forecast,
  will gladly state that the vast majority of the remainder of the
  7-day forecast (Wednesday evening through next Monday) currently
  carries fairly high confidence in remaining dry and fairly quiet
  weather-wise. Following our brief blast of noticeably-colder
  temperatures Wednesday (highs only in the 20s to low 30s and
  perhaps falling further during the day), a gradual moderation
  will start to get underway on Thursday (Christmas) with highs
  20s northeast to around 40 southwest, then followed by the
  overall-warmest days of the next week on Friday-Saturday with
  widespread highs in the 40s-low 50s. This warm-up is short-lived
  however as colder air returns for Sunday-Tuesday with highs
  currently only aimed 30s to low 40s Sunday, then only low-mid
  30s at best Monday-Tuesday.

- Although it is way at the end of the official 7-day forecast
  (and mostly beyond), fans of longer-term forecasts will note the
  POSSIBILITY of a potentially-significant winter storm that is
  showing very early/preliminary signs of affecting our general
  Central Plains region during the Tues-Thurs time frame next
  week. Although this will obviously bear watching in the coming
  days, anybody reading this knows darn well that it is FAR too
  soon to put much stock in the details of this system. For now,
  our forecast merely reflects "innocent" low chances for snow
  starting next Tuesday.

Taking a quick look/recap of the current/recent weather scene as
of 4 PM: No big surprises to speak of at all, as indeed today has
panned out to be the anticipated warmest day of the week, as
mostly sunny skies (although filtered this afternoon by passing
high cirrus) combined with steady south winds (generally sustained
15-20+ MPH/gusts 25-35 MPH boosted afternoon high temps well into
the mid 50s to low 60s range across most of the CWA (and even some
spotty mid 60s mainly far southwest). In the mid-upper levels,
water vapor satellite and short term model data clearly reveal a
potent shortwave trough tracking directly toward our region from
the west-northwest, with the main vort max in the base of the
trough currently digging across southern WY. At the surface, the
gusty south winds today are focused out ahead of a north-south
oriented lee trough to our west, which currently registers around
995 millibars in the NE Panhandle.

With the main points of the 7-day forecast as a whole outlined
above, will now conclude with some details SOLELY FOCUSED on these
next 24-30 hours, and starting with some further background on
Warning/Advisory headlines:

- High Wind Warning:
In short, simply upgraded the inherited High Wind Watch for the
western CWA to a Warning (starting midnight) and then also
included the rest of the central/eastern CWA in a High Wind
Warning as well (starting 6 AM). Admittedly, confidence is not
overly-high that we will truly see widespread Warning criteria
(sustained speeds commonly 40+ MPH/gusts 58+ MPH), but with good
potential for several hours of sustained 30-40 MPH and at least
sporadic gusts to 50-55 MPH likely, felt that it was prudent to
"bridge the gap" between Warnings to our west and Advisories to
our east with a CWA-wide Warning. For sure, the initial surge of
strong northwest winds will arrive overnight from west-to-east,
and while this first surge could at least flirt with Warning-
criteria gusts (especially west) as stout pressure rises move in,
the overall-strongest winds of the event are expected to occur
during the day Wednesday before slowly-but-surely easing below
headline-criteria late Wednesday afternoon into the night.

- Winter Weather Advisory:
As touched on above, the snow situation (particularly exact
amounts) carries considerably-lower confidence than the wind
situation. Even at this close time range, models vary considerably
regarding how aggressively they phase low-mid level
lift/saturation, and thus snow potential. For sure, our official
forecast of generally 1-2" north of I-80, a dusting up to 1" along
the I-80/Hwy 6 corridors and only a dusting at best near/south of
the state line is a "middle ground" between the more
aggressive/benign model extremes. That being said, confidence that
at least SOME snow will fall between late tonight and early
Wednesday evening is increasing, and PoPs have been increased
(quite possibly not enough). Obviously with such strong winds, it
won't take much snow at all to reduce visibility to less than one
mile, and at least briefly/localized much lower, with yes even
near-blizzard conditions possible at times, but with expected
fairly brief duration due to this system being fairly progressive.
In the end, coordinated with neighboring LBF/OAX to get the ball
rolling with an official Advisory for those areas north of I-80
where confidence is highest in at least 1" of snow falling (not
that it will be easy to measure in the wind), but obviously at
least minor travel impacts could occur south of the current
Advisory as well (including I-80 corridor. In addition, there
COULD be a flash-freeze scenario late tonight into Wed AM
depending on how quickly temperatures fall and allow the initial
rain and/or rain-snow mix to freeze onto roads.

Other short term weather details...

This evening-tonight:
Both the upper level trough and strong/associated surface cold
front will enter/surge across our area late tonight, with the main
vort max directly over/very near our CWA at sunrise Wednesday. All
precip chances kick in post-midnight as precip type will likely
initially start out as rain showers briefly before fairly quickly
transitioning to snow/snow showers. Low temps are a little tricky
as the strong winds will initially keep things rather "mixed"
before the strong cold air advection arrives. Actual overnight
lows were nudged up slightly, ranging from low 20s northwest to
low 30s far south-southeast.

Wednesday daytime:
The fairly quick-moving/progressive upper trough passes directly
overhead, keeping areas of wind-whipped snow/snow showers going
throughout much of the day (especially in our northern CWA).
However, by sunset any falling snow should be gone/departed east
of our area. High temps are a bit misleading as they will likely
occur right away in the morning with steady-to-falling temps
possible thereafter. For sure, most areas can expect actual temps
in the 20s most of the day with wind chills only single digits-
teens.

Wednesday evening-night:
In the wake of the departing system, skies will largely clear and
winds will gradually decrease, although it will remain modestly-
breezy throughout the night with sustained speeds commonly 10-20
MPH and some higher gusts. Though these breezes will help keep
temps from falling to their full potential, still have most areas
bottoming out well down into the teens.

A strong cold front is approaching the forecast area with strong
northwest winds. Upstream as the front passed gusts are 40kts or
higher. Expect this to impact both terminals. Also high-resolution
runs have indicated that precip will begin as rain and quickly
switch to snow this morning with more snow than originally
anticipated. This heavier snow and wind will cause reduced
visibilities. MVFR to IFR conditions are expected with some
potential for LIFR if snow is heavy enough. Snow will persist
throughout the day today with the winds to at a minimum off and on
IFR to LIFR conditions depending on the intensity of the snowfall
throughout the day. Winds and snow will eventually decrease
around 21-00z today.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for south central Nebraska and
portions of north central Kansas.

.DAY ONE...Tonight.

Overnight, strong northwest winds will surge across the entire
outlook area behind a powerful cold front. A High Wind Warning is
in effect after midnight for all counties west of the Highway 281
corridor, where the overall-strongest overnight winds should
focus. Please refer to the Warning statement for more details.

In addition to strong winds, portions of the Nebraska outlook area
could pick up light snow accumulation between midnight and
sunrise. Although snow amounts through sunrise will likely be
less than 1 inch, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect after
midnight for counties north of the Interstate 80 corridor. Please
refer to the Advisory statement for more details.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Wednesday through Monday.

During the day Wednesday, the entire outlook area will have very
strong northwest winds, and especially Nebraska portions of the
area will continue to see areas of at least light accumulating
snow. As a result, a High Wind Warning is in effect through 6 PM
for the entire outlook area, and a Winter Weather Advisory is in
effect through 6 PM for Nebraska counties north of Interstate 80,
which is the area that stands the best chance of seeing total snow
accumulation of at least 1 inch. Please refer to the High Wind
Warning and Winter Weather Advisory statements for more details.

Please note that even south of the official Winter Weather
Advisory area, at least minor travel issues due to the combination
of falling snow and strong winds could also affect Nebraska counties
along the Interstate 80 and Highway 6 corridors.

.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...

Spotter activation will not be needed through tonight, but any
reports of accumulating snow over 1 inch or possible wind damage
would be appreciated from late tonight into the day Wednesday.
