South central SD will be added into a winter storm warning start
late tonight and ending Sunday afternoon. A watch will be maintained
for far southeast SD into northwest IA for Sunday but confidence is
growing that this will need to be upgraded to a warning. An advisory
has been issued for much of central and eastern SD into southwest MN
for late Saturday night into Sunday.
One last mild day ahead of the incoming cold air that will keep
temperatures below normal through the end of next week. Clouds will
continue to thicken today as forcing increases and rain chances
increase. Two areas of potential through the day today. One will be
over northeast NE and northwest IA which is driven a bit more by
weak, elevated instability. The other will be a bit more frontally
driven with the focus in central SD east down highway 14. Neither
area is expected to produce a lot in the way of rainfall but around
a tenth of an inch not out of the question. Interstate 90 from Sioux
Falls into southwest MN will see the lowest chance for precipitation
into the afternoon. Temperatures will start off the morning
relatively mild in the mid to upper 30s, then climb into the 50s in
most locations with a downward trend in central SD late afternoon.
By tonight the right entrance region of the upper level jet
strengthens and frontal forcing in the mid levels increases as well.
The stronger forcing will develop later tonight, mainly from about
750 mb to 700 mb. There are some hints of decent frontal forcing
around 800 mb as well and at each of these levels some hint of
instability as well which should help to focus precipitation along
and south of Interstate 90 by early Sunday morning. As the
precipitation develops and spreads east later tonight the cold air
will continue to collapse south with the rain/snow line likely
closing in on Sioux City and Spencer IA by sunrise Sunday morning.
This forcing is very driven by this northern jet so confidence is a
bit increased with most models not indicating issues with the
thunderstorm threat to the south redirecting moisture transport into
the region and/or weakening the mid level frontal forcing. By
sunrise Sunday morning parts of south central SD could be
approaching 3 to 5 inches of snow with the expected forcing and
moisture.

A band of moderate to heavy snow with wind gusts to 35 mph will be
ongoing Sunday morning from southeast SD into southwest MN and
northwest IA. By mid day the 700mb trough axis will encroach on
Interstate 29 and will likely be very near the back edge of the
precipitation. The only reason this may not be is some suggestion by
the nam that some weak surface based instability could keep snow
showers going once some of the mid level moisture and forcing is
gone. The GFS does not agree as much so will just keep some lower
chances into the afternoon for this potential. By sunset pretty much
all but a line from Jackson MN to Ida Grove will have seen the snow
end.
Once this system exits, quiet but unfortunately cold weather is
expected Monday through Friday. With the increased confidence in
snow cover highs Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday will likely only
reach the 30s. Thursday into Friday will start to see this cold
air scoured out so highs will climb into the 40s and maybe a few
50s Friday. Overall, not a very pleasant week ahead.
