Cloud cover a bit more extensive this evening moving in from the
west, and also slower to exit, resulting in temps falling not
quite as quickly. Nudged a couple western areas up a few degrees
with the likelihood of clouds holding tough further into the
night, at which point return flow should help to keep from
fully bottoming out.
Little changed at this point on the snow event for Saturday night
into Sunday, with potential for banding continuing to look strong
on 00z NAM and WRF-ARW, which focus on areas from just north of
I-90 through Highway 14.

Flurries east of I-29 will come to an end this evening as surface
high pressure builds into the region. With clearing skies and winds
decreasing, expect temperatures to fall into the single digits above
and below zero. With light winds, wind chills should remain warmer
than 20 below.
Low level warm air advection is expected to begin after midnight and
continue through the day on Saturday. Despite clouds being on the
increase, mechanical mixing will lead to a warm up through the day.

Focus during this forecast package continues to be on wave impacting
the region Saturday night into Sunday morning. Canadian solution
continues to be the southern outlier, with the NAM and ECMWF hedging
toward the northern extreme. Overall, the 12Z solutions trended
just ever so slightly southward with the system. Forecast soundings
suggest lifting below 800 mb may be quite difficult, and focused on
750 mb frontogenesis for pop placement. With low level lift hard to
come by, expect a very sharp southern edge to precipitation that
develops. Have trimmed back pops and qpf on southern edge of the
band. With very steep lapse rates from 800-600 mb, equivalent
potential vorticity is strongly negative above strong frontogenesis
in the 00-12Z time frame Sunday. With instability and strong
forcing, expect 1"+/hr rates within the heart of the band. What is
a bit concerning is the dendritic layer appears to be fairly
elevated and somewhat shallow. Appear atmospheric column may try to
dry out aloft on Sunday morning, with low level lift and saturation
remaining. Could see some light freezing drizzle across portions of
northwest Iowa.
With all that in mind, have expanded the winter storm watch across
east central South Dakota into all of southwest Minnesota into far
northwest Iowa. Have extended the watch in time slightly as wind
gusts near 30 mph on the backside of the system may create areas of
blowing snow.
Conditions are expected to improve Sunday night into Monday.
Forecast looks fairly quiet for the first half of the week. West to
northwest flow is expected to prevail, keeping temperatures below
seasonal norms.
Model disagreement continues on the system mid-week, but general
consensus appears to be focused south of the forecast area. Have
left slight chance-chance pops in the Wednesday-Thursday time
frame.

VFR stratus could bleed into the upper end of MVFR moving into
areas from the James River westward after 10z, and linger into the
early morning. Otherwise, the cloud band should gradually diminish
in coverage shifting eastward toward I-90 and into southwest MN
during the later morning/midday. The main aviation impacts will
develop along with a strong frontal band of precipitation which
will take shape mainly north of I-90 during the evening hours.
Ceilings and visibilities likely dropping below IFR in the core of
the band for numerous hours after 03z. KFSD areas will see
conditions lowest as the warm advection band lifts north and east
during the mid to late evening.
Potential that KSUX area south of the main precipitation band may
develop a period of low- level wind shear after 03z Sun.
