.SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight)

Bitterly cold temperatures across much of the region tonight, as
high pressure slides southeast. Wind chills will generally settle
between -15 and -30 in most areas overnight, coldest in the northern
and northeastern portions of the CWA.
Today: We'll slowly begin to see southeast winds increase through
the day. The cold start to the day along with light mixing will
lead to colder than previously forecast high temperatures. Many
areas may struggle to reach 10 degrees, with the warmest areas
near the Missouri River.
Tonight: Clouds begin to increase as do low level winds. Strong
warm advection begins as a LLJ between 50 and 60 knots begins to
transport moisture northward. Elevated areas near the Buffalo ridge
may have issues with blowing snow into Friday morning. Models have
slowed down the arrival of precipitation slightly, saturating the
column near the Missouri River by 3-6am. Snow will begin to fall
in earnest once saturation takes place.
.LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday)

Friday: Guidance remains fairly consistent with the development of
strong warm advection, and increasing upper divergence aloft by
daybreak Friday. The rapid onset of precipitation should take place
quickly as snow races northeast. There is support in several high
resolution models for snow rates approaching 1" per hour at times.
The biggest uncertainty is where these enhanced bands may take
place. GFS QPF remains a high outlier, with EC/GEM much lower. GFS
remains a high outlier within the GEFS model spread as well. That
said, have generally increased QPF from previous forecast based
on introduction of higher resolution guidance.
Winds will be a significant concern as well on Friday. Increasing
SPG will produce synoptic sustained winds between 20 and 25 knots,
but soundings also suggest for gusts over 35 knots at times as
snow is falling. Would like to see better low level wind field
alignment in order to pull the strongest gusts downward, but winds
with higher precipitation rates will make conditions deteriorate
very quickly in most areas and visibility drop below 1/4 mile at
times.
Friday Night-Saturday: Models still consistent in bringing a mid-lvl
dry slot into the region behind initial shortwave energy. This may
at times shut off precipitation or transition towards a mixture of
fine snow or freezing drizzle/rain. Inverted trough sweeps eastward
after midnight as secondary vorticity maxima moves through. Strong
pressure rises behind the boundary will dramatically increase the
SPG and synoptic winds. Soundings continue to show support for
widespread 40+ knot wind gusts well into Saturday morning.
Additionally, still potential for additional light snowfall with the
frontal passage as it moves eastward.
Snow will dissipate as strong downglide moves in Saturday morning,
but winds will still persist. Only beginning to see some subsidence
in wind speeds by mid-afternoon Saturday. Blowing snow should
continue to be an issue through the day.
Accumulation Overview: With the slight uptick in QPF, even with SLR
approaching 10:1, totals may range from 3 to 7 inches in a large
area along and east of I-29. Totals are expected to be lighter
further west, but there has also been a slight trend westward. Icing
amounts should remain less than one tenth of an inch.
Headline Considerations: Delicate headline forecast for this event,
one that will likely unfold in two separate pieces. For now, we're
planning on issuing a large higher end advisory for snow, blowing
snow, and mixed precipitation for Friday into Friday evening. Some
consideration for upgrading to a winter storm warning, however
confidence is lower on potential wind speeds and snow amounts. One
more run of model data will allow day shift forecasters to fine tune
upgrades if needed and still give plenty of heads up awareness.
Given the separation and likely "lull" in impactful precipitation
Friday evening into the early overnight hours, will maintain the
winter storm watch for late Friday night through Saturday. Blowing
snow model tools all indicate moderate to high potential for
blizzard conditions into Saturday, and it will be important for
all to communicate the two part nature to this system. Have
expanded the winter storm watch blizzard wording further west.
Saturday Night-Monday: Cold arctic air drains southward for the
upcoming weekend. Temperatures well below zero are anticipated
and highs may struggle to climb above zero Sunday and Monday. We
will need to watch an increase in cloud cover and potentially very
light snow that is now appearing in guidance for Sunday night.
This could limit the strong radiational cooling potential
depending on the track.
Tuesday-Thursday: The good news is that this cold burst of air will
be short lived as the mid-lvl flow transitions quickly towards a
more westerly component. Temperatures will trend back to near or
slightly above normal by mid-week with the next chance for
precipitation by Wednesday.
