Stronger lift associated with upper shortwave energy is hitting
the area, with the development of moderate freezing drizzle up to
and even north of Interstate 90. Given quick ice up of surfaces
this morning, will expand winter weather advisory further north.
Colder air is beginning to surge southeast as light reflectivity
on radar is beginning to take on a difference appearance, with
drizzle changing over the light snow.

Nevertheless, the shortwave will move through by 9am and will also
extend advisory time to cover the full morning commute.

.SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight)
Issued at 250 AM CST Wed Jan 15 2020

Early this morning, continuing to monitor observations and radar for
the development of any freezing drizzle or light snow. The main
culprit for this potential precipitation is a shortwave visible on
water vapor imagery in western South Dakota.  For the most part,
warm warm advection ahead of this wave has struggled to develop
precipitation out of the 5000 ft thick stratus layer moving through
the area. Lift should increase over the next 1-3 hours as the wave
approaches, which may lead to at least some growth in drizzle or
light snow.  Thermal profiles continues to suggest the greatest
liquid risk is south of I-90, with more of the sounding approaching
the DGZ  the further north one travels in South Dakota. Given the
uncertainties in development, and the fact that the advisory is
already issued, will maintain.

Today: Surface high pressure will race southward today, bringing
breezy northwest winds and drying out conditions quickly after
daybreak as the wave moves east of the forecast area.  The warmest
readings today will be right away this morning, with falling
temperatures in most locations.

Tonight: The surface high moves closer overnight, leading to a light
and variable wind.  Outside of perhaps a bit of cirrus, decent setup
for radiational cooling tonight.  This will push temperatures well
below zero in most locations. Wind chills will approach advisory
criteria in northern portions of the CWA, but with light winds, may
not consistently stay below -25F.

.LONG TERM...(Thursday through Tuesday)

Thursday: Surface ridging slides east as mid-lvl ridging increases.
Winds turn southerly through the day as mid-upper clouds increase.
Temperatures will be slow to respond however as highs struggle to
reach the teens to lower 20s.

Thursday night-Saturday: We continue to monitor the next more
impactful storm system moving towards the northern US late Thursday
night and continuing through Saturday. Models remain well clustered
in showing the development of strong warm advection Thursday night
ahead of an upper trough moving into the Central Rockies.  850mb
winds pushing 60 knots focus strong convergence over the area, with
left exit region of an upper jet providing more than sufficient
support for rapid blossoming of precipitation. Latest soundings
continue to indicate more likelihood that precipitation will
develop as snow at the onset. Moderate to occasionally heavy snow
lifts northward ahead of an inverted trough that will be sliding
eastward Friday morning. The focus for the heaviest precipitation
remains along and east of I-29 through early afternoon Friday.

Guidance then continues to lift a mid-lvl dry slot north and east by
the afternoon hours, with soundings from both the NAM/GFS/EC
supporting a loss of ice and potential for transition to light
rain/drizzle which could turn into freezing liquid depending on the
sfc temperatures. Speaking of those temperatures, anticipating a
quick warmup near to above freezing immediately ahead of the
inverted trough.

The consistency in the synoptic details remains above average even
into Friday night. Unfortunately this means a growing potential for
very strong winds behind the frontal passage. Latest soundings
continue to indicate 45-50 knots of flow at the top of the mixed
layer from midnight Friday through mid-day Saturday.  Should
indications of mid-lvl frontogenesis collocated above this sfc
frontal boundary continue, this may produce significant impacts
from blowing and falling snow and could lead to blizzard
conditions.

All that said, based on QPF ensembles and blended QPF, focus for
snow between 3-7" remains along and east of I-29, with lighter
amounts further west. Icing amounts generally will remain less than
1/10 of an inch.  There remains considerable spread in QPF in GEFS
ensembles on the western side of the warm advection axis.

Saturday night-Tuesday: Significant cold air is expected to drop
southward into the Central US for the second half of the weekend and
early next week. Recent blended guidance has cooled temperatures
once again, and there remains potential that some areas with fresh
snow may not climb above zero for a day or two.  The good news is
that temperatures will snap back closer to normal by the middle of
next week.

winds are expected late Friday night into Saturday. At this time,
the highest snow totals are focused along and east of Interstate
29. All interested parties are urged to continue monitoring their
