AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Sioux Falls SD 613 AM CDT Mon May 18 2020 .SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight) Issued at 312 AM CDT Mon May 18 2020 Temporary clearing from north to south this morning as stratus works south in northerly flow. Mixing along and east of I-29 will result in stratocumulus developing through the morning hours. Weak instability (~50 J/kg of surface based CAPE) from roughly 900-850 mb may produce a few afternoon sprinkles across southwest Minnesota and northwest Iowa. With the cloud cover and northeast flow lingering across the eastern half of the forecast area, have lowered expectations on forecast highs. Overnight, low lying stratus lingers across the eastern forecast area. As low level winds become more easterly through the night, stratus is expected to spread back to the west. .LONG TERM...(Tuesday through Sunday) Issued at 312 AM CDT Mon May 18 2020 Stratus will be tough to shake on Tuesday with increasing southeast winds. Currently have areas along and east of I-29 covered in clouds, but where the clouds set up, temperatures will be impacted. Therefore, have lowered expected high temperatures close to the 50th percentile of model guidance (a degree or two shy of 850 mb mixout). Breezy southeast flow is expected across the region on Wednesday as blocking pattern across the eastern half of the US forces a strong area of low pressure to lift to the north into Canada across the intermountain west. Shortwaves rotating around the upper trough may create a chance of showers on Thursday into Thursday evening. Lapse rates appear to be fairly moist adiabatic, so limited thunder mention. By Friday, atmosphere becomes increasingly unstable as short waves continue to train over the area with southwest flow aloft. With the gulf wide open, appears to be a decent setup for periodic thunderstorms. && .AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Tuesday morning) Issued at 607 AM CDT Mon May 18 2020 MVFR ceilings will be widespread east of I-29 today.
