AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Sioux Falls SD 644 AM CDT Thu May 14 2020 .SHORT TERM...(Today through Friday) Issued at 420 AM CDT Thu May 14 2020 Impressive wave moving along the International Border early this morning, with weaker leading feature sliding across northern MN. Subtle initial wind shift working across the area with initial wave forcing, but will see the main wind shift evolve with the secondary frontogenetic band pushing southeast across the area today. Most areas east of the James River covered by a blanket of stratus early this morning, with a couple notable holes in far southeast SD. Fog is fairly patchy at this point, with lower visibilities divided between the newly developed lower clouds west of I-29 and east of the James, and some around the ridge in southwest MN into northwest Iowa. Layer has been shallowing over the last several hours which has brought spotty light drizzle to an end, so the stronger mid-May sunshine should be able to make use of the edges and holes within the shield to rapidly dissipate from many spots while the clouds start to advect a bit more toward the east. Could see a little patchy dense fog through shortly after sunrise, but should not become a widespread issue. Otherwise, the small areas of Q-vector convergence sliding through south central SD had earlier developed a fairly decent cluster of showers and thunderstorms, but as has been the case of late with the more stable air in place further east, coverage and intensity has been decreasing moving eastward into the area. May yet see a few showers glance the lower Missouri River valley very early today, with the chance of any additional precipitation coming the the secondary wind push by mid- to late afternoon. The drying westerly component developing today and evacuation of clouds should allow temps to reach the lower 70s most locations. At this point, have left thunder mention out with some question on if the near-surface moisture will tend toward the higher side of solutions necessary to get more than 100-200 J/kg SBCAPE. Looks more to be a healthy cumulus field with a few showers, but less likely to incorporate enough depth to electrify. Solid push of drying working in behind the upper low as it moves into the northern Great Lakes with ridge surface and aloft working through the region tonight into Friday. Looks to keep things quiet. Initial blends continue to be quite aggressive with spreading rain chances back into southeast SD by Friday morning, and preferred a much slower solution backed by consensus of operational solutions, finally bringing a little better chance for a shower back into areas west of the James River during Friday afternoon (may be a bit quick even cutting back 12 hours) as should take that long for mid-level warm advection to begin to overcome the drier air below. .LONG TERM...(Friday night through Wednesday) Issued at 420 AM CDT Thu May 14 2020 Rain chances will increase going through Friday night as trough moving through the northern Rockies begins to flatten the ridge and emerges with diminishing wavelength into the western plains by 12z Sat. An assortment of convection is likely to develop from eastern KS toward MO along the larger scale synoptic boundary, while somewhat disrupted low-level return flow through the high plains brings a lesser amount of moisture northward into SD. Still, fairly strong dynamic lift with system kinematics should be able to overcome a relative lack of instability for a decent area of rainfall across southeast SD by later in the night. Saturday will continue to be the wettest day overall of the forecast period, as the sharp upper trough works eastward across SD. While uncertainties in the definition of banded rainfall will necessitate a more soggy forecast throughout the day than will likely happen as the mid-level wave moves pretty much right over the area on Saturday afternoon. Instability continues to be the missing model ingredient, and is a fairly paltry few hundred J/kg MLCAPE around peak heating, somewhat thanks to the degree of precipitation and clouds in models. Considering the ambient vorticity, and likelihood of a bit better near-surface vorticity with inverted troughing slipping eastward into the area during the afternoon, any period of diurnal heating that is more than model suggestions would increase the 0-3km CAPE enough to bring concerns of potential funnels or brief spinups with low-based convection. This will be something to watch as timing of precipitation becomes more apparent. One change in models from previous runs is somewhat more deepening with the upper wave as it moves past the region on Sunday. The result is the developing significant ridging next week is at a slightly more western longitude, and thus keeping the area in a trajectory that is more out of the retreating surface ridge for a couple days longer instead of out of the warmest regions to the west. While temps will warm up to well above normal readings, it may take a day longer to reach the 80s, and any readings near 90 are looking less likely. Certainly keeps any threat of precip out of the area until at least later Wednesday, but will also carry the need to watch evolution of the cyclonic stratus field over the eastern plains by Monday, and if that could advect to impact conditions in southwest MN or northwest IA for a time. && .AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Friday morning) Issued at 644 AM CDT Thu May 14 2020 Widespread VLIFR and LIFR conditions continue east of the James River early this morning, but the trend should be to diminish the relatively thin layer over the first 3 hours of the TAF period at both KFSD and KSUX. Otherwise, should see mainly light winds until passage of a weak secondary front during the afternoon hours. There is the risk of a few showers, and an even lower threat for thunder, both somewhat less certainty than would be in a point forecast.
