AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Sioux Falls SD 617 AM CDT Mon Mar 30 2020 .SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight) Issued at 250 AM CDT Mon Mar 30 2020 Clear skies and light winds persist across the region early this morning. This trend will persist for much of Monday, with a few exceptions. Water vapor imagery this morning showing mid-lvl trough quickly approaching the Central Rockies. For the most part, this energy will stay in the Southern Plains. However, latest guidance showing a subtle wave breaking free and moving towards the Northern Plains later this afternoon and evening. Moisture will focus in a narrow zone across central Nebraska into Central South Dakota later this afternoon and evening, which should be the focal point for scattered showers and even isolated thunder mainly west of the James River. Temperatures today will climb another 3-5 degrees over highs on Sunday, reaching the 60s in many locations. Tonight: The aforementioned shortwave will move northeast through the area tonight. However, the low-lvl moisture axis will continue to stretch and thin as the wave shifts into northern South Dakota. This should result in lowering PoPs through the night, focused west of I-29. .LONG TERM...(Tuesday through Sunday) Issued at 250 AM CDT Mon Mar 30 2020 Tuesday: There may however be a few lingering showers into Tuesday morning within the narrowing moisture axis. However this minor wave should move east of the area by mid-day. Stronger warm advection will begin Tuesday afternoon as 850 mb temperatures in the teens begins to move into the Western Plains. Locally, deeper mixing should push high temperatures towards the 60s, but could be tempered a bit by cloud cover. Have favored the slightly cooler GFS/ECMWF for now. If mid-lvl clouds are not as thick as forecast then temperatures could trend even warmer. Tuesday night: Focused 850 mb warm advection over top a developing surface warm front will lead to an increasing risk for showers after dark Tuesday night. Instability is limited, but present enough to warrant at least an isolated thunder mention across eastern South Dakota and western Minnesota. Temperatures overnight will remain very balmy due to the southwesterly surface flow. Will hedge towards the 75th percentile of guidance and push lows warmer. Wednesday: As slightly southwesterly flow remains aloft, a frontal boundary will begin to settle into the region early on Wednesday. Ahead of this boundary, southwesterly surface flow and 925 mb thermal ridge will lead to temperatures climbing into the 60s once again. However, if the boundary does end up pushing further southeast and suggested by the NAM, then temperatures may be held cooler. Winds may be a bit gusty Wednesday afternoon at peak mixing ahead of the boundary, and have bumped populated guidance slightly. Wednesday Night: Model guidance still a bit unsettled on the positioning of the frontal boundary by Wednesday evening. Most though are indicating warm advection overhead of this boundary in the evening as the 850 mb baroclinic zone begins to tighten. This could spark off the development of showers and even a few thunderstorms into Wednesday night across the CWA. Non-severe, but have increased probability of thunder grids to increase the mention. Thursday-Friday: As expected, models have gravitated towards much higher precipitation chances Thursday into Thursday into Friday. An increasing low-lvl frontal circulation underneath broad upper divergence should produce a larger area of precipitation across the Dakotas. Predominantly rain over the eastern half of South Dakota and the adjacent areas of Minnesota, Iowa, and Nebraska on Thursday, will transition to a wintry mix and then snow by Friday morning as colder air advects southeast and the surface boundary rushes further east. Have adjusted temperatures slightly into Friday morning to push snow southeast a bit faster than populated guidance. Light snow accumulations will be possible by time precipitation ends by mid-day Friday. Temperatures on Friday will struggle to reach the lower 40s by the afternoon hours. Saturday-Monday: High pressure dries the region out for Saturday into Sunday. Temperatures will remain slightly colder than normal for the first half of the weekend. Medium range guidance showing a quick transition back to southerly flow for Sunday as very progressive wave begins to move into the Plains. This wave may bring our next chance for light precipitation to end the weekend. && .AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Tuesday morning) Issued at 610 AM CDT Mon Mar 30 2020 VFR conditions will prevail for much of Monday into Monday evening. Mid-lvl cloud deck will continue to increase across central South Dakota and Nebraska this morning. Cirrus will gradually spread eastward at the same time. Winds will remain variable through mid-morning until a prevailing southeasterly wind develops. Scattered showers will move into areas west of Interstate 29 later this evening and into the overnight hours.
