AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Sioux Falls SD 454 PM CST Fri Mar 6 2020 .SHORT TERM...(This Evening through Saturday Night) Issued at 238 PM CST Fri Mar 6 2020 Winds will be decreasing this evening, but due to the increasing surface pressure gradient they will remain breezy overnight. This will maintain the flow of warm air into our area, which will keep our overnight lows close to our normal high temperatures for the day. The records for high minimum temperatures will be in jeopardy, as records lie in the mid 30s to lower 40s which are certainly achievable. Breezy conditions continue throughout the day on Saturday, leading to continued concerns for high to very high fire danger from Vermillion, SD to Storm Lake, IA. Strongest wind gusts up to 35 mph will be occurring in northwest Iowa and southwest Minnesota, with areas west of I-29 experiencing gusts up to 25 mph. Dewpoint temperatures will be increasing throughout the day, leading to relative humidity values remaining fairly constant ranging from 25 percent in Gregory county up to 40 percent along and west of the James River Valley. Record high temperatures for the area on Saturday range from mid 70s to lower 80s, so we will not be breaking any of those records with forecasted highs in the mid to upper 70s for those areas west of the James River Valley. Another mild night is in store, with an even warmer night possibly creating more record high minimum temperatures. As has been discussed, these warm temperatures continue to melt down the snowpack and will lead to continued rises on our area streams and rivers. .LONG TERM...(Sunday through Friday) Issued at 238 PM CST Fri Mar 6 2020 Unseasonably warm temperatures and breezy conditions continue into Sunday, with areas along the Missouri River tapping into the 70s, and our northern areas along Highway 14 getting into the 60s. Record high temperatures for Sunday are lower than they are for Saturday, so some of them may get close. After a quick glance, Sioux Falls, Sioux City, and Spencer all have a chance of at least tying their record high temperatures for the day. As for fire danger, dew points continue to keep us from getting above high fire danger despite the drying ground and breezy conditions. All good things must come to an end, and in our case a cold frontal passage will put an end to our near record temperatures that we have been experiencing. As we enter almost zonal flow aloft, the front will come sweeping through from the central South Dakota in the afternoon, quickly exiting our area by Monday morning in northwestern Iowa. In the early morning hours trailing behind the front, there is chance for rain in far southeastern SD and northwestern IA, extending north into southwestern MN in the early afternoon. Models are hinting at there being a slight chance for some mixed precip along the Minnesota/Iowa border, so kept that possibility in the forecast to reflect that. QPF remains light along and north of I-90, with increasing amounts south towards areas along the Highway 20 corridor in NE/IA possibly seeing up to a third of an inch of rain. Despite the sudden drop in temperatures, the highs will still be slightly above what we can normally expect this time of the year. Tuesday brings another chance for light precipitation later in the morning, starting off as snow before quickly switching over to rain in the afternoon. As a second push of upper level energy comes with cooler temperatures later Tuesday evening, precipitation type will likely switch back to snow and be out of the area by the morning hours. As models still have a wide variety of solutions for this event, confidence remains low on how this will play out. Above average temperatures remain for the rest of the week, with models hinting at another round of precipitation on Thursday. && .AVIATION...(For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Saturday evening) Issued at 451 PM CST Fri Mar 6 2020 VFR conditions expected through the period.
