Winds have been a bit stronger with the push of Arctic air into
our western counties. There have been some reports of blowing
snow, and wind chills have dropped down to well within advisory
criteria west of the RRV and not just marginal. Will put out an
wind chill advisory for our northwestern counties for the rest of
the morning. Added a blowing snow mention in the grids.

.SHORT TERM...(Today through Wednesday)

FZDZ/snow mix this morning and snow later tonight into Wednesday
will be the main impacts for the period.
Several weak shortwaves seen on WV loop moving through this
morning, with the stronger vort lifting into northern MN while a
secondary shortwave has been moving through eastern ND. The main
surface low is over our eastern counties, with most of the snow
now lifting into the Lake of the Woods area while our southeastern
counties have been reporting quite a bit of BR as the mid levels
have been drying out between the shortwaves. Some icing groups at
the ASOS stations on and off, and some FZRA was briefly reported
as far northwest as here at the office as well as the airport and
the base. Model soundings have this dry air aloft hanging on for
another few hours before the mid levels start to saturate later
this morning. Northwestern areas have all been reporting snow so
far, and that will continue for the next few hours before the
eastern ND shortwave lifts out of the area. Precip will taper off
by mid-morning as the shortwaves lift out of here and we get
surface high pressure building in behind the departing low.
Another upper trough moves into the Dakotas later tonight,
providing some synoptic lift. Some 700mb frontogenesis is also
possible, with banding potential not out of the question although
the system will be pretty fast moving. Some of the global models
drop a large amount of snow over our southern counties, and think
this is a bit overdone even with high snow ratios. However, the
strong forcing think a large area of 2 to 4 inches will be
possible south of highway 200 corridor later tonight into
Wednesday morning, with some higher amounts possible wherever the
band sets up. Will have to monitor for a winter weather advisory,
but for now will just message in the HWO and weather stories and
hold off on any headlines. Snow will taper off on Wednesday and
the day should become fairly quiet and cold.
The other issue will be the incoming cold temperatures behind this
morning's shortwaves. Most spots have hit their highs for the day
just after midnight or during the early morning hours, as there
will be some strong cold air advection for much of the day today.
Parts of our northwestern counties could flirt with wind chill
advisory this morning, but with it just being marginal and low
impact in comparison to winter precipitation will monitor for the
time being. A reinforcing shot of cold air will come down behind
tomorrow's shortwave, with temps down into the teens to single
digits below zero even with cloud cover tonight. Highs on
Wednesday will be in the single digits either side of zero even
with clearing skies in the west.
.LONG TERM...(Wednesday night through Monday)

A return to a cold and active pattern is expected for the extended
period featuring hazardous wind chills and frequent chances for
light snow. A late week storm system may bring higher snow chances
to the region.
Monday night through Tuesday...
Early morning water vapor imagery shows a broad troughing regime in
place across the western two thirds of the CONUS with a few notable
shortwaves embedded within the mean flow. One shortwave in
particular, currently located off the western coast of Canada, is
forecast to propagate into the northern Plains by late Monday. As
this occurs an attendant surface low will deepen and shift into the
upper MS valley region. This will bring light snow chances across
the Dakotas and northern MN through Tuesday morning. Ensemble
guidance suggests that low-end snow amounts are most likely, but a
few ensemble members do show the potential for pockets of higher
amounts. The latest deterministic guidance supports this idea by
showing a weak banding signal associated with mid level frontogensis
as the low deepens. However, the progressive nature of this system
will hinder the potential for advisory level snowfall (3+ inches).
A cold front associated with the Monday night/Tuesday system will
begin a cooling trend that will last the rest of the week. Highs for
Tuesday will largely depend on how fast colder air filters into the
region, but should reach into the teens and possibly low 20s for
locations across west central MN.
Tuesday night through Thursday...
As the western troughing regime transitions to a more zonal flow
pattern across the central US, a second progressive shortwave will
bring another round of light snow to the region late Tuesday night
through Wednesday morning. Thanks to weaker forcing for ascent and a
lack of appreciable moisture, snowfall amounts are expected to again
be on the low side and will likely be confined to south of the
Highway 2 corridor.
This period will see the coldest temperatures of the week with
daytime highs reaching the single digits (on either side of zero)
and overnight lows in the teens to 20s below. Hazardous wind chills
are likely during this period, especially during the overnight hours.
Friday through Saturday...
The zonal mean flow regime is expected to gradually transition to a
more amplified pattern featuring a more robust upper level wave
across the central US by the late week/early weekend period. Both
ensemble and deterministic guidance are in fairly decent agreement
that a surface low associated with the upper level wave will develop
somewhere across the Great Plains. However, there is still
considerable spread regarding the timing, placement, strength, and
potential impacts of this storm system. While the current most
likely scenario calls for light snow chances, there is the potential
for this system to bring travel impacts to the region. However, this
system is still nearly a week out so forecast changes and
refinements are expected heading into the upcoming week.

A bit of lingering light snow is reducing visibilities down to the
1-4SM range at most airports this morning. Some freezing drizzle
is not out of the question, although chances for that are
decreasing as the morning goes on so did not include in the TAFs.
IFR ceilings will lift to MVFR later this morning, with some VFR
possible later today and into the evening. The improvement will be
short lived as the next system approaches. MVFR to IFR ceilings
along with light snow reducing visibility down below 5SM will be
possible after 06Z. Northwest winds at 15 to 25 kts will slowly
decrease later this morning, then become more northerly late in
the period.
