flooded areas. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
People living in the Red River basin should monitor river levels
while the river is in, or near, flood.

1st and October 1st, and 48 hours otherwise. However, depending on

will combine to speed up the melt and cause river levels to rise
again for most tributaries. Minor to moderate flood levels are
expected with the exception of major levels at Harwood and West
Fargo Diversion as Maple, Rush and Sheyenne River waters cause back
water and overland flooding expands.

Safety message - Turn around, don't drown. Don't travel through
flooded areas. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
People living in the Red River basin should monitor river levels
while the river is in, or near, flood.
River forecasts use 24 hours of forecast precipitation between April
1st and October 1st, and 48 hours otherwise. However, this forecast

.Flooding from snowmelt continues along Red River and its tributaries
in both North Dakota and Minnesota. Major flooding is expected along
the Red River at Grand Forks and Oslo as well as along the Sheyenne
River at West Fargo and Harwood. Flood crests are not yet forecast
along the Red River at Drayton and Pembina with a potential crest
around major flood stage in mid to late April possible. Minor to
moderate flooding is forecast at many sites along the Red River,
Sheyenne River, and Minnesota tributaries. Backwater and continued
snow melt will cause elongated crests for some sites, particularly
along the Red River at Grand Forks and Oslo. Secondary crests are
forecast for many sites due to expected melting of recent snow. Ice
is still present in some rivers within the central and northern Red
River basin which may cause water levels to fluctuate.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
Safety message - Turn around, don't drown. Don't travel through
flooded areas. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
This forecast does not account for ice jams that can quickly raise
local river levels with little or no notice.
People living in the Red River basin should monitor river levels
while the river is in, or near, flood.
Current river forecasts include forecast precipitation from 7 am

snowfall melts. Ice is still present in some rivers within the
central and northern Red River basin which may cause water levels to
fluctuate. Major flooding is forecast along the Sheyenne River at
West Fargo and Harwood.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
Safety message - Turn around, don't drown. Don't travel through
flooded areas. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
This forecast does not account for ice jams that can quickly raise
local river levels with little or no notice.
People living in the Red River basin should monitor river levels
while the river is in, or near, flood.
River forecasts use 24 hours of forecast precipitation between April
1st and October 1st, and 48 hours otherwise. However, depending on

.Melt water from snow and ice from last weeks winter storm continues
to move into the river system causing secondary crests at many
locations with most being below the initial crests. The most
significant impacts will be major flooding along the Sheyenne River
near West Fargo and Harwood where flooding may become more
widespread.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
Safety message - Turn around, don't drown. Don't travel through
flooded areas. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
People living in the Red River basin should monitor river levels
while the river is in, or near, flood.
This forecast does not account for ice jams that can quickly raise
local river levels with little or no notice.

Issued at 955 PM CDT Mon Mar 30 2020 Radar returns have continued to weaken as they move eastward into our area. However, still could see a bit of sprinkles/light rain later tonight so kept our low POPs we had going after midnight. Temps will continue to fall into the 30s overnight. UPDATE Issued at 640 PM CDT Mon Mar 30 2020 Some radar returns that have been approaching the western counties have been rapidly fizzling out, although some stronger returns continue to develop over central ND. Could see a few sprinkles with minimal impacts, so will keep the very low POPs we have going for tonight. No big changes to temps, should see a good drop off after sunset and bottom out in the 30s with a few upper 20s in the far eastern counties. && .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Tuesday night) Issued at 332 PM CDT Mon Mar 30 2020 No impactful weather expected through the short term periods, focus is on unsettled pattern in the extended (as well as flooding). See Hydro section for flood discussion. Shortwave ridging aloft will transitions east with a weak shortwave trough progressing over our CWA late tonight into Tuesday. Limited moisture return/drier air limits confidence in measurable precip. Light precip signal is there, but ultimately may be non-measurable (sprinkles). There is a signal for instability building into ND Tuesday afternoon and as southwest flow develops ahead of the next approaching wave a few showers or even weak thunderstorms could develop late Tuesday afternoon. WAA actually increases through tomorrow and we may be even warmer than today when many locations reached 50 and some 60. .LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday) Issued at 332 PM CDT Mon Mar 30 2020 The main concern for this period will be periodic precipitation chances. Impacts related to this concern will be with the ongoing flood (see hydro section) and potential winter impacts. Guidance is in good agreement indicating an upper low to propagate into western Canada and become blocked through the end of the week. Multiple upper level disturbances will round the base of this upper low and bring precipitation chances to the northern plains. Tuesday night-Wednesday...The first upper level feature will propagate near the International border Tuesday night with the strongest forcing and heaviest QPF remaining to the north. A secondary upper level feature will eject from the Montana area and catch up to this forcing by Wednesday morning. Main forcing mechanism from both features will be primarily synoptic (warm air advection), although strong low level moisture advection may be enough to bring weak instability and isolated thunder as well. Most likely scenario is for a band of showers (thunder) to propagate across North Dakota Tuesday night, and diminish by Wednesday morning. As the secondary upper level feature propagates into the region Wednesday morning, a warm front will lift northward with enhanced precipitation across northeast North Dakota and northwest Minnesota. Majority of this activity should be showers (possibly thunder), although cooler temperatures to the north may mix in snow (any accumulations should be minimal). Most locations should get less than 0.10 inches of QPF, with up to half an inch possible north of Hwy. 2. Duration and intensity of the QPF along and north of the warm front will be dependent on exact interactions/timing of upper level features, which is more uncertain. NBM 25th to 75th percentile QPF near the International border is 0.15-0.50 inches, showing the degree of uncertainty that still exists. Given this would say up to 0.50 inch precipitation is possible, with coverage uncertain. Wednesday night-Friday...Strong signal exists within guidance that a sharp baroclinic zone will be in place across the region. As the next upper level wave ejects from the Rockies, this baroclinic zone will lead to Fgen and potential banded precipitation. A narrow and elongated area of heavy precipitation (1+ inch) is possible, with much less amounts elsewhere. Ensemble and global model guidance likely have too big of a footprint for QPF. With that said, the location, amounts, and coverage are still very uncertain and dependent on the timing of the ejecting upper wave. This will determine the area affected and residence time of the Fgen at any one given location, along with coverage of QPF. P-type is also uncertain with the baroclinic zone low level thermal profile transitioning from below freezing along the western edge to well above freezing along the eastern edge. Impactful snowfall is definitely possible given the potential strength of the forcing that may lead to strong evaporative cooling, although warmer low level wet bulb temperatures may prevent snow from accumulating. High pressure and cooler temperatures will move into the region for the weekend. Ensemble guidance in agreement indicating more active weather and warmer temperatures returning to begin the work week. && .AVIATION...(For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Tuesday evening) Issued at 640 PM CDT Mon Mar 30 2020 VFR conditions will continue throughout the period with some increasing high and mid clouds. A few of the high resolution models break out some fog again overnight but with increasing clouds and some sprinkles moving in think that chances for widespread reduced visibilities are not very high so will keep it out of the TAFs. Winds will steady out of the southeast, slowly picking up throughout the period. By tomorrow afternoon, there will be some gusts above 20kts. && .HYDROLOGY... Issued at 135 PM CDT Sat Mar 30 2020 The Wild Rice River at Abercrombie is beginning to show signs of a slower rise than what was observed over the weekend, however, we still expect to reach into major flood stage. The Red River at Fargo is expected to reach major flood stage by mid-week with moderate flood stage expected at Halstad. East Grand Forks and Oslo will meet flood criteria by mid-week. Precipitation is expected later this week, which could impact the flood forecast going forward. Additionally, warmer temperatures through Tuesday will serve to enhance snow melt heading into mid- week. The Maple River near Mapleton and the Sheyenne River near Harwood have now risen into moderate flood stage. The Buffalo River near Hawley, the Wild Rice River in MN near Hendrum, and the Sheyenne River near Kindred will reach minor flood stage this week.
