. Upper level closed low is expected to combine with a strong
cold front to bring winter weather conditions over the Gila
Region and Sacramento Mountains from Monday night through early
Wednesday morning. Temperatures will drop below freezing on
Monday evening/early Tuesday morning which will allow the
transition from rain to snow. Periods of moderate to heavy snow
are possible with this system from Monday night through Wednesday
morning. Snow accumulations are expected to be between 6 to 10(+)
inches in the Sacramento Mountains, and areas above 7500 feet in
the Gila Region, with isolated higher amounts. The snow should
end by Wednesday morning.

MOUNTAINS AND LOWLANDS...

Falling afternoon temperatures has allowed for rain to change to
snow over portions of Luna, Sierra, and Dona Ana Counties in
southern New Mexico. Continued precipitation will result in
accumulations worthy of an advisory in those areas. 1-3" of
snowfall is possible along I-25 and I-10 east of Deming. Additional
snowfall over the mountains is expected this evening, with 4-8" 
of new snow possible. Snow will begin to taper off early Wednesday
morning.

Rain showers have overspread all terminals this morning. Ceilings
will generally be OVC050, but will drop temporarily to MVFR/IFR
conditions with the heavier rainbands. Rain ends west to east
after 14Z at KTCS and KDMN, and by 15Z at KLRU and KELP. As the
rain moves out, ceilings lift to BKN-OVC080-010. Wind generally SE
at less than 10 knots, becoming southerly this evening. Rain
chances return this evening after 01 and 03Z, with rain chances
continuing into the overnight.

.PREV DISCUSSION...525 AM MST Mon Feb 10 2020...

.SYNOPSIS...
A disturbance aloft will kick of some showers and possibly even a
thunderstorm this morning and this afternoon. An upper low over
the northern Baja will begin moving across the Mexican Sonoran
desert tonight and then across New Mexico Tuesday night and
Wednesday. This will develop another round of rain showers, with
some heavy snow likely in the mountains. The rain may turn to
light snow over the lowlands from El Paso east Tuesday night but
little accumulation is expected. Wednesday should clear as the
upper low moves off to the east. Mostly clear with temperatures
warming back to normal Thursday through Saturday, with the next
Pacific storm possibly bringing some showers to the Borderland
Sunday.

.DISCUSSION...
.SHORT TERM...Today and Tonight...
Active start of the week for the Borderland, as we will see
precipitation chances throughout the region today, lasting through
Wednesday. Currently, light to moderate rain is falling west of
an El Paso and Las Cruces, but this will spread east this morning.
A 400mb PV stream associated with a weakening upper level
shortwave is helping to kick off this round. An increase in
subtropical moisture will help precipitable water values increase
at El Paso by sunrise to .65"(+)", which is high for this time of
the year, so there is plenty of atmospheric moisture to work with
this morning. Convective allowing models show a few hundred J/KG
MUCAPE with these storms, with 0-6KM shear 30-50 kts, so rush hour
commuters shouldn't be surprised if there is some rumbles of
thunder this morning. Rain will end beginning this morning from
west to east, exiting over the Sacramento Mountains by early
afternoon. Precipitation will fall as rain over most of the region
this morning, but as it enters the Sacs, snow levels will drop to
8000 feet, and possibly even 7500 feet on the east slopes where
there is cooler air due to a stalled front.

CAMs show a break in precipitation as this band exits the region,
with some clearing possible this afternoon. However, rain chances
enter the region once again this afternoon as a formidable upper low
approaches the region, placing weak mid-level divergence over our
western zones. Instability that forms this afternoon will depend
on the amount of clearing that occurs. The RAP and HRRR are most
aggressive showing 600-800 (+) J/KG of MUCAPE focused on areas
west of the Rio Grande River (NAM and GFS aren't
as aggressive as they show increased cloud cover), with 0-6km of
shear at 60(+) knots; LI's around -5 and WBZ at ~5000 feet.
Therefore wouldn't be surprised if a few storms become strong to
severe, with locally heavy rain and hail being the biggest
threats.

As the upper low draws near, precipitation overspreads the area from
west to east this evening and into the overnight hours. Snow levels
start out in the Gila this evening at 8000 feet, but will drop to
6000 feet by morning. Snow levels start at 8500 feet in the Sacs,
but drop to around 8000 feet by morning. A second cold front rushes
toward the forecast area by sunrise, bringing increased 850-700mb
frontogenetic forcing to the Sacs, eventually reaching the Gila
Region. Snow chances will continue through Wednesday, which will be
discuss further in the long term. A Winter Storm Warning has been
issued starting late tonight for the Sacs, and for areas above 7500
feet in the Gila Region, where 6-10(+)" of snow may fall through
Wednesday. This may need to start earlier in the Sacs if the
system this afternoon ends up producing more snow than expected.

.LONG TERM...Tuesday morning through Sunday...
Upper low Tuesday morning over southern Arizona moving over
southern and central New Mexico Tuesday night and then to the
Texas Panhandle Wednesday afternoon. Both GFS and ECMWF show
secondary low further south over northern Mexico. For Tuesday
expect scattered to numerous showers, with heavy snow likely in
the mountain zones. Snow levels will start this period around 6000
ft over the Gila and 5000-7000 ft over the Sacs (highest west
slopes) as the back door cold front is able to filter into much of
this area. The back door intrudes in more earnest Tuesday
afternoon and evening with all elevations of the mountain zones
changing to snow. Also east of the Rio Grande Valley, snow levels
will fall to around 3800 ft Tuesday night, with snow levels over
El Paso County briefly hitting 4000 ft. The El Paso metro area
could receive up to one inch late Tuesday night and Wednesday
morning. Might be a case again where west El Paso receives only a
dusting or no snow. Have upgraded Winter Watch to Warning and also
threw the higher Gila/Black Range zone (above 7500 ft) in the
warning, with an advisory for this same zone below 7500 ft. Latest
GFS shows snowfall potential above 12 inches for the highest
elevations of the Sacs.

Precip should begin tapering off and ending west of the Rio Grande
Valley by around daybreak Wednesday, with areas to the east ending
by around noon. Dry northwest flow should allow skies to clear
later Wednesday. Both GFS/ECMWF show weaker wave aloft developing
over southern Nevada Wednesday night. GFS a bit stronger and moves
the feature over the area late Thursday night. Does not look like
any precip but modest amount of higher clouds likely with it.

Both GFS/ECMWF show next system to impact us as a closed off low
just west of the Baja Sunday morning as a large positively tilted
trough passes to our north. Still significant differences between
the two models after this time. GFS dampens low out over northern
Mexico with little or no impact to our area. However it quickly
moves another upper trough to our area Monday and Monday night for
a shot of showers. ECMWF opens that Baja low up but brings it
right up over the forecast area Sunday evening through Monday
afternoon. It also shows nice fetch of sub-tropical moisture ahead
of it with significant rainfall accumulations. This feature is
still at the outer range of our forecast period, so will just put
in a slight chance of showers Sunday.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Low fire weather concerns this morning as rain showers an mountain
snow showers overspread the forecast area today, with another round
of precipitation tonight, lasting through Wednesday. A winter storm
warning has begin issued for the Sacramento Mountains, and the Gila
Region (above 7500 feet) where 6-10(+) inches of snow may fall by
Wednesday morning. Min RH's will be above 30% across all areas
Monday through Friday and well into the 40s and 50s Tuesday and
Wednesday. Ventilation will be Good to Very Good most locations
Tuesday into Wednesday, especially central portions of the forecast
area. Dry conditions expected Thursday and Friday.
