.PREV DISCUSSION...422 AM MDT Sun Mar 22 2020...

.SYNOPSIS...
With a more typical spring time weather pattern back in place,
the region will continue with seasonally warm and dry conditions
to finish out the weekend. Today will also be one of our lower
wind days of the upcoming week, with generally westerly winds in
the 5 to 15 mph range. Temperatures will top out this afternoon
very close to yesterday's highs, which were just a couple of
degrees above normal. Monday gets windy as a shortwave trough
passes to our north. We catch a short break in the winds on
Tuesday with only slightly breezy conditions, but the windy
conditions return on Wednesday. Wednesday through Friday the next
Pacific low pressure system will approach to give our region and
extended duration of windy afternoons. The Borderland weather will
be warm and dry with mild overnights. The Gila region may see a
few isolated showers late week as the system passes. The next
weekend will bring the region a break in the winds.

.DISCUSSION...

.SHORT TERM...Today and Tonight...
Pleasant weather is expected today. Current Nighttime
Microphysics satellite imagery is showing a band of high clouds
over southern NM and western TX. It also shows low clouds trapped
against the mountains east of our region as a stalled front
remains there. Today, a weak upper ridge moves which should
alleviate the breezy winds in the afternoon. However, a weak lee
cyclone in northeastern NM keeps winds between 10 to 20 mph over
far west TX and Otero county.

For tonight, winds decrease in intensity with speeds below 10 mph.
More high clouds are expected to move over the region, which should
keep our morning low temperatures similar to this morning. Although,
they should be somewhat cooler as winds are lower which should
restrict mixing near the surface.

.LONG TERM...Monday through next Saturday...

Today's shortwave ridge will quickly flatten out overnight as it
gets shoved east by an upper low off the central CA coast that comes
ashore, and opens up as a shortwave trough over Las Vegas by Monday
afternoon. This feature will help to start our March wind season in
earnest as a 140kt jet aloft slides south and nears our region. In
response, a lee surface trough will develop over the SE CO/NE NM/TX
Panhandle area. Warm surface temperatures allow deep mixing to near
650mb where winds are 50kts. Thus tight low-level gradients and
momentum mixdown from aloft will make for a windy day. Sustained
winds of 30 mph are expected across much of the area. Thus we will
issue a Wind Advisory with this package.
Temperatures will warm to near 80 across the lowlands, and the
region will continue dry with clouds moving out for a sunny
afternoon.

Tuesday brings brief relief from the windy conditions, which
correctly implies, Wednesday follows with a return of stronger
winds. The next Pacific low pressure system will still be well
upstream and west of our region, but it will have an early influence
in our conditions as pressure gradients begin to re-tighten.
Wednesday will be dry and warm, with a mix of high clouds and
sunshine, temperatures about 5-7 degrees above normal, and winds in
the 20 to 30 mph range.

Thursday and Friday look to be our strongest wind days of the week.
This is when the Pacific storm system slowly marches eastward across
northern AZ and NM. Because it passes to our north we will remain
dry over most areas, as our regions sits below the jet aloft and the
tighter pressure gradients on the systems southern extent. There may
be just enough moisture to squeeze out some isolated, light rain
showers over the Gila region, but the rest of the region should stay
dry. Winds will grab the headlines with the passage of this system
as models currently suggest winds stronger than those expected
tomorrow. Thus we will likely be issuing a Wind Advisory, and
considering High Wind Warnings for some areas. Friday will be
cooler, with temperatures dropping back to near normal, as we see
the system pass and bring a Pacific front with it.

For next weekend we continue on Saturday with near normal
temperatures behind the system with lighter winds thanks to weak
ridging and zonal flow aloft.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Sunday will be dry and warm with winds peaking in the afternoon
between 10 to 20 mph. Relative humidity will drop to the mid and
upper teens in most areas. Ventilation rates will be Fair to Good,
but improve to excellent on Monday. This is a result of strong
transport winds above 30 mph with mixing heights generally above
5500 feet. Winds at the 20 foot level will be around 20-25 mph and
with minimum relative humidity dropping further into the lower teens
in the lowlands, there is a good chance for Red Flag conditions.
Therefore, a fire weather watch will be issued this morning.

Dry weather continues through next Wednesday as more seasonal
weather takes place. This includes more windy conditions as we head
into next week. The strongest winds are expected both on Monday and
Thursday, with elevated fire weather conditions expected on both
days. A slight chance of rain showers is possible over portions of
the Gila region and the NM Bootheel on Thursday, otherwise the
region should remain dry. Currently, fire danger remains low to
moderate due to unfavorable fuels retaining moisture from the past
few weeks rains. The upcoming dry weather, warmer temperatures, and
increasing winds through the rest of March will revitalize fire
danger risk back to typical levels over the next few days.

Breezy to windy conditions will be expected from Monday through
Thursday. However, blowing dust should not be a concern at the

to blow loose objects and create difficult travel conditions on
Monday and Thursday.
