What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this small craft advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Eureka, CA wrote its last area forecast discussion before this small craft advisory went out at Nov 15, 5:14 AM PST, 1 hour 34 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Nov 15, 5:14 AM PST, 1 hour 34 minutes before
AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Eureka CA
514 AM PST Sun Nov 15 2020

.SYNOPSIS...An active, wet weather pattern will continue through the
middle of the upcoming week. Rain will continue to push in through
tonight, becoming heavy around Del Norte County as a front stalls
out. Only minor rainfall amounts are expected in southern
Mendocino and Lake Counties. Monday will bring a break in the
weather with a milder day, before a potentially more potent storm
brings more rain and wind Tuesday and Wednesday.

&&

.DISCUSSION...Widespread rain has filled into region, along with
gusty southerly winds. The maximum wind potential has been reached
early this morning, with 45 mph gusts reported in Del Norte county.
Wind will be on the decrease today, but will remain gusty. Rainfall
totals have generally ranged from 1 to 2 inches thus far. Heavier
amounts are focusing in on Del Norte county, while areas lee of
Cape Mendocino are experiencing the typical southerly wind rain
shadow effect. The Flood Watch is on track for Del Norte county
with influence from an atmospheric river, where rainfall totals
near 6 inches may occur in the mountains, and amounts exceeding
two inches closer to Crecent City. Impacts may end up being pretty
minor, but think there is enough potential for some minor
flooding in low-lying areas, as well as places near 'flashier'
small streams and creeks adjacent the high terrain. Hourly rates
should stay below a half- inch for the most part, so concerns for
burn scar debris flow on the Slater Fire scar are not high, but we
will have to keep an eye out for the rain rates in that area as
the day progresses.

Attention next moves over the NERN PAC on monday as a potent
upstream jet streak aids in the deepening of a large trough, with
surface cyclogenesis occurring in response. The trough will approach
well negatively tilted as the deepening area of low pressure lifts
northeast. A subsequent cold front is forecast to sweep eastward
toward NWRN CA Tuesday morning. Models are coming together better
for this system. Rainfall amounts from the front Tuesday look to be 1
to 2 inches through Wednesday morning. Additional rainfall will be
likely post frontal passage through Wednesday evening as waves of
energy spin off the eastward progressing trough, followed by an
additional front. Gusty southerly winds will be the main focus
beginning early Tuesday morning. Refer to the Land Wind section for
further details. There is a slight chance for thunderstorms on
the backside of the front, mainly over the waters near the Del
Norte county coast on Tuesday, with better chances with the next
front Wednesday.

&&

LAND WINDS...Pressure gradients will begin to tighten up in advance
of a low pressure system Monday night. Strongest winds over land
areas appear to be during the early morning hours of Tuesday. GFS
and ECMWF were still slightly out of synch on the timing. Both
indicate the potential for at least advisory level wind gusts to 50
mph. GFS was faster, while the ECMWF remains slower and indicates
strong winds lasting longer, through about 18Z on Tue. A wind
advisory will be necessary with this system, primarily over the
coastal headlands and over the exposed ridges of mostly Humboldt and
Del Norte counties. Higher resolution model guidance, which is not
available yet, should shed more light on this wind event for early
Tuesday morning.

&&

.AVIATION...Rain with a frontal system will result in IFR and
MVFR conditions today. The greatest threat for IFR will be at the
coastal terminals, especially CEC where the boundary is expected to
meander about through tonight. There is also a threat for low level
wind shear for ACV and CEC today, due to robust S-SW winds aloft,
around 30-40kt. Conditions will generally improve by late tonight,
however moist grounds will likely result in shallow ground fog as
winds abate, especially in the coastal valleys.

&&

.MARINE...A steep NW swell around 12 to 15 ft will ensure hazardous
seas through the weekend. A deep low pressure system will develop
offshore on Monday. Gale force winds appear to hold off until Monday
night. Storm force gusts will be possible by early Tuesday morning.
The duration of storm force winds appears to be insufficient to
warrant a storm watch at this time.

&&
