.SYNOPSIS...Inland temperatures will heat up for this weekend as
an upper level ridge builds over the West Coast. Coastal areas
will remain seasonably cool, with clouds giving way to occasional
afternoon sunshine. Persistent dry weather may give way to
isolated thunderstorms for some of the interior mountains on
Monday.

.DISCUSSION...Marine layer cloudiness filled back in along the
Redwood Coast and portions of the Mendocino Coast overnight, with
a passing trough still allowing for a little deeper stratus layer
to extend up some of the river valleys to locations like
Garberville and Navarro. With a weaker inversion and a bit more
mixed boundary layer remaining underneath the stratus, most of the
immediate coast is not very foggy, though there is a little bit of
very light spotty drizzle. Similar to yesterday, this weaker
inversion should allow for some clearing and sunshine this
afternoon for most coastal locations. Inland areas will turn out
sunny and dry once again, with high temperatures similar to
yesterday, if not trending a little hotter.
Heading into the weekend, the trough over the Pacific Northwest
will lift eastward while an upper level ridge shifts across the
West Coast in it's wake. This pattern will favor warming
temperatures aloft, with a shallower but perhaps more stubborn
layer of coastal stratus keeping the immediate coast cool and
mostly cloudy. Meanwhile, inland high temps will heat up to near
or above 100 degrees in many of the interior valleys. This heat
will persist into early next week.
Models continue to advertise a weak upper-level low developing off
the southern California coast over the weekend. This feature may
track northward across our area around Monday. Southeast flow
ahead of it will attempt to draw mid-level moisture across the
interior mountains late Sunday into Monday, along with increasing
instability. Have added a slight chance of thunderstorms around
northeast Trinity County late Sunday, and continued the chance for
isolated storms on Monday. The timing of this feature coinciding
with max daytime heating either day, along with the amount of
mid-level moisture and instability will determine the coverage and
intensity of any potential storms. Beyond that, the rest of next
week looks dry, with a gradual cooling trend inland, and perhaps a
deepening marine layer. /AAD

.FIRE WEATHER...Hot and dry weather is expected across interior
northwest California heading into the weekend, with afternoon
RH likely dropping into the teens across some of the deeper
interior valleys of Trinity and Lake County. Recoveries will
generally be moderate to good, with only locally poor recoveries
over some of our easternmost ridgetops. The greater threat will
come late on Sunday and particularly on Monday, when another
threat of isolated to perhaps scattered thunderstorms will arrive.

.AVIATION...The North Coast and nearby inland river valleys are
experiencing heavy stratus and a considerable marine layer this
morning. IFR conditions prevail and are expected to linger at KCEC
until Northwest winds pick up later this afternoon. Ceilings
should begin to lift and scatter at KACV in the late afternoon,
but will return again tonight. The Mendcino coast is expected to
see lighter winds and more persistent stratus as adjacent Pacific
high pressure starts to weaken.

.MARINE...An inland thermal trough will strengthen today into
Saturday. Small Craft Advisories continue for the southern waters
and the northern outer waters for winds and seas through the
afternoon. Gale force gusts are expected to develop late tonight for
the northern outer waters. A Gale Warning has been issued for this
zone from 11 p.m. Saturday through 9 p.m. on Sunday. Steep, short-
period seas will develop as a result of the gusty winds, with seas
topping out around 12 feet at 10 seconds. Along the coast, winds
will generally be lighter, with the exception of near Point Saint
George and in the vicinity of Cape Mendocino. Localized gale force
gusts will continue to be possible downwind of the Cape through
Saturday. Conditions are expected to begin to improve early on
Sunday.
