.SYNOPSIS...The first full official week of summer will bring an
extended stretch of hot, dry and sunny weather to interior
northwest California, while cool onshore breezes and marine layer
clouds keep most coastal areas seasonably cool.

.DISCUSSION...Temperatures have surged higher this afternoon
under a building dome of high pressure situated along the West
Coast, reaching well into the 90s across almost all interior
valley locations, with even some low 100s in the hottest spots.
Expect similar conditions once again for Tuesday afternoon, with
little change in H5 heights or 850 temps. This will support
continuing the Heat Advisory for most of our interior valleys,
before a trough puts a dent in the ridge on Wednesday, 'cooling'
most inland areas by at least several degrees. The ridge will
build back with a vengeance late week, resulting in possibly the
hottest day on Friday, before a more substantial trough puts a
bigger dent in the inland heat by the end of the weekend.

We are also still looking at a largely dry and sunny week for
inland areas, but have continued the slight chance thunderstorm
for eastern Trinity County for Tuesday PM. Am skeptical that there
will be enough moisture and instability in the absence of any
decent trigger to get convection going over the mountains, but
there is quite a big of support from guidance for a few small
isolated cells. The same could occur on Wednesday afternoon near
northeast Trinity County, and that day we will at least have the
aforementioned weak upper trough passing through. That being said,
have not added a slight chance there just yet.

Meanwhile, coastal areas will continue to battle shallow areas of
fog and stratus, and weak onshore breezes each afternoon will keep
temperatures seasonably cooler. While the stratus has cleared the
Humboldt Coast this afternoon, there is a subtle southerly flow
reversal that has the Mendocino coast still socked in. While it
may take a bit longer to redevelop tonight, still think there will
be a shallow layer of fog and stratus that develops for most of
the immediate coast for much of Tuesday morning. The Mendocino
coast may struggle to see afternoon sun once again. On Wednesday,
with the trough passing by, the inversions should weaken enough to
aid in more in the way of clearing and afternoon sunshine.
However, it looks like that will be followed by a renewed push of
shallow moisture that will likely bring shallow coastal stratus
and fog right back for Thursday and Friday mornings. With the
building ridge overhead those days, any fog that does redevelop
will be harder to scour out along the beaches those afternoons.
While areas just inland will warm up into the 70s and 80s, it
looks like there will still be enough weak onshore flow each day
to keep the immediate coast mainly in the 60s even late this week.
The marine air will likely tend to deepen a bit heading into the
weekend. /AAD

.AVIATION...The stratus and fog that blanketed much of the coast and
had extended inland up some of the adjacent river valleys has almost
totally dissipated. A bit of low clouds remained tucked just S of
Patrick's Point with more trying to surge back N along the Mendocino
coast. Tonight's forecast will be a tricky one. On the one hand, low-
level moisture is expected to continue to advect northward over the
coastal waters and expand overnight as a southerly flow reversal
becomes more entrenched across the near shore coastal waters.
However, the ACV profiler has showed significant warming above the
surface as high pressure builds and the subsidence inversion
strengthens. As a result, the marine layer has become very shallow.
In addition, a light offshore component to the low-level flow is
expected overnight. As a result, expect the clouds and surface
visibilities to be a bit variable overnight. Still think some
shallow ceilings and at least MVFR visibility reductions are
possible at KACV (and, to a lesser extent, at KCEC), but uncertainty
is high. Nevertheless, anticipating whatever develops to dissipate
Tuesday morning. /SEC

.MARINE...Northerly winds and waves persist across most of the area,
although generally light southerly flow has developed over portions
of the Mendocino and extreme S Humboldt county coasts. The light or
southerly winds over the near shore waters are expected to expand
northward tonight. This will push the stronger winds farther off the
coast for the day on Tuesday. The outer waters will continue to see
steep seas and N winds of 15 to 25 kt, with a Small Craft Advisory
continuing.

For Tuesday night and Wednesday, northerly winds will strengthen and
push back toward the coast once again. Small Craft Advisories will
likely be needed area-wide by late Tuesday night or Wednesday. Gusts
to gale force will be likely by Wednesday, and a Gale Watch may need
