AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Eureka CA 309 PM PDT Sat May 30 2020 .SYNOPSIS...Rain chances will remain elevated across the area through this evening, with a few showers possible across the eastern part of the area Sunday and Monday. Dry and warmer weather is expected elsewhere across the interior through late next week. Coastal areas will remain seasonably cool, with possible overnight and early morning bouts of marine stratus. && .DISCUSSION...Water vapor imagery shows the upper-level low that was responsible for all the lightning overnight and early this morning currently sits over central California. The low will lift to the north-northeast and out of the area this evening. Rain chances will remain elevated for portions of the forecast area through this evening, particularly across the interior. Showers should quickly come to an end late this evening as the low pushes into southeastern Oregon. Another strike or two of lightning cannot be ruled out over the Yolla Bollys or the Trinity Horn area through this evening, but confidence is low. Sunday will start of dry, but embedded waves will bring another round of showers Sunday afternoon mainly across the eastern part of the forecast area. A near repeat of this will be possible on Monday, though afternoon highs will be a few degrees warmer across the interior. Coastal areas are expected to remain dry, with some bouts of low clouds overnight and early morning through Monday. Interior temperatures will warm once again starting on Tuesday. Highs in the mid 80s to low 90s will be possible across some of the warmer interior valleys through the Thursday. Temperatures will begin to cool on Friday as another system approaches the area. Additional chances for some precipitation will accompany this system and model guidance is in pretty agreement with this scenario. Though, exact details remain a little uncertain. && .AVIATION...Regional airports, including the 3 main airports of CEC, ACV and UKI, were impacted by a number of (possible restrictive) flight hazards as a strong storm system moved across Northwest California. Thunderstorms/lightning, a few hail reports, variable wind conditions and IFR/LIFR conditions developed starting in the very early morning hours into afternoon. After midday, most of the pronounced convective activity had terminated with mainly rain and a few light showers continuing as was shown on radar scans. Also around noonday, many interior Cigs were reporting cloudy but VFR. Along the Coast however, MVFR and IFR will continue through late afternoon/evening, with Binovc in the lower Cig overcasts. /TA && .MARINE...Winds will weaken throughout the rest of today as northerlies redevelop over all zones. Northerlies will increase again tomorrow to around 15 to 25 knots by around noon across the outer waters and around Cape Mendocino and Point Saint George. Small Craft Advisories will be needed for these increasing winds and likely steeper, short-period seas. Winds will remain elevated through most of the upcoming week over these areas.
