AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Eureka CA 436 AM PDT Mon May 18 2020 .SYNOPSIS...Showers and thunderstorms will move across the region today. Thereafter, partially clearing skies tonight will aid in patchy valley fog and frost. Otherwise, drier weather appears likely during mid to late week. && .DISCUSSION...An upper low was positioned immediately offshore from NWRN CA early Monday morning. A persistent zone of ascent was located east of the low, and was aiding in moderate shower development spreading east-northeast across the Humboldt and Mendocino coasts. Occasional lightning strikes were embedded within the area of showers. Model forecast soundings indicate low and midlevel lapse rates will steepen further going into the afternoon as modest boundary layer heating occurs beneath 500 mb temperatures near -25C. SBCAPE values from 100 to 500 J/kg will develop across much of interior NW CA as a result, and will favor heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms...particularly during the afternoon into early evening. Small hail will be possible with this activity, though the boundary layer airmass is forecast to be too warm to support impactful accumulations. Brief periods of heavy rainfall rates will also be possible across burn scars in Trinity, Mendocino, and Lake Counties. Debris flows are not currently expected, but the day shift will need to monitor nevertheless. The upper low is forecast to move southeast to the CA/NV border late tonight. Showers will dissipate in its wake, and skies may partially clear. Moist soil conditions and radiational cooling will likely support patchy fog development across interior valleys. In addition, valleys in Trinity and northeast Mendocino Counties may experience localized frost development. Midlevel temperatures will remain sufficiently cold going into Tuesday afternoon for scattered shower development over the Yolla Bolly Mountains and Trinity Alps. Otherwise, northwest flow aloft during midweek will favor drier conditions. Building surface high pressure over the NERN PAC will also aid in strengthening north- northwest winds which may lead to marine stratus development that could impact coastal locations. JMG && .AVIATION...Widespread showery regime will continue across NW CA today as a deep upper trough moves overhead. Expecting mainly VFR conditions to prevail at area terminals through the day, but intermittent bouts of MVFR will remain possible as heavier showers move through. Modest instability associated with the pool of cold air aloft will continue to support the potential for a few thunderstorms over much of the area, with generally lower probabilities near KCEC and higher chances moving south and east. Showers will taper off during the evening as the trough axis clears the area. Will have to watch for fog formation overnight as skies begin to clear, with abundant low level moisture left over from the rain of the past few days. /CB && .MARINE...Winds have dropped off considerably and will remain generally light today while gradually backing from the southwest this morning to northerly tonight as a weakening surface low passes through the coastal waters. Seas will be dominated by a decaying mid period W swell for the next 24-36 hours as winds remain light. Northerlies will begin to increase on Tuesday and persist for the remainder of the week as high pressure builds offshore behind the departing trough.
