AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Eureka CA 301 PM PST Sat Feb 15 2020 .SYNOPSIS...A weak weather system will move across the North Coast tonight with periods of light rain or drizzle for areas north of Cape Mendocino. The remainder of the week looks mild with little to no rain expected...until possibly next weekend. && .DISCUSSION...Mid and high level clouds continue to increase across the region ahead of an approaching weak front. This approaching front looks to fall apart as it approaches, likely bringing only light to locally moderate rain, which is currently expected to arrive at the CA/OR border by this afternoon...then spread south into the evening. Rain will predominantly remain in coastal areas north of Mendocino County, although a few showers may stray farther south early Sunday morning. Rainfall amounts currently are expected to reach around half an inch in Del Norte county yet quickly taper off towards the south and east. Most of Mendocino county and even some of the valleys of eastern Trinity will stay dry, while Humboldt should expect anywhere from a few hundredths to two tenths of an inch of rainfall. Widespread shower activity should diminish by Sunday afternoon, although a stray shower remains possible across the coastal mountains through tomorrow evening. Skies will thus stay mostly overcast through much of the weekend, with some potential for localized clearing Sunday afternoon.Model guidance continues to hint toward weak to moderate offshore flow developing next week across northwestern California, and if this occurs there should be a fair amount of sunshine in the foreseeable future. However morning valley clouds and even some episodes of stratus for portions of the coast remain possible through next week. As far as wind goes some weak southerlies associated with the front can be expected north of the Cape tonight but will quickly transition back to northerly Sunday afternoon. Monday afternoon/evening look like the windiest periods of the week with near coast northerlies running 10 to 15 mph and gusts to 20 mph. && .AVIATION...Conditions are expected to deteriorate late tonight through Sunday morning at the coastal terminals as a frontal system over NW Oregon slowly sags southward. The main push of low level moist air and rain will arrive early Sunday morning. MVFR conditions are expected, however periods of IFR are probable as SSE winds shift around to the WNW. For the most part, KUKI will be spared from low ceilings and vsbys, though some cloud decks may creep over the coastal ranges during the day on Sunday. && .MARINE...A cold front over NW Oregon will slowly sag southward tonight through Sunday morning. The front will generate light to moderate southerlies north of Cape Mendo later tonight into Sunday morning. Wind speeds with the boundary will be insufficient to warrant headlines for small craft, though a few gusts to 20-25 kt will be possible around Pt St George Sunday morning. Meanwhile, winds south of Cape Mendo will continue to trend downward tonight and become fairly light by Sunday morning. Seas will also trend downward tonight and advisory conditions are not expected. Sunday afternoon/evening, northerly winds are expected to return and ramp up to advisory level. How quickly winds and seas ramp up on Sunday is not certain. Latest GFS, NAM and the high resolution models were out of synch on the timing and magnitude. The consensus is for north winds to reach advisory levels Sunday night, after 4PM. There is a potential gale force gusts on Monday, primarily over the outer waters. A watch or warning for gales and/or seas will be necessary if the models remain consistent. North winds and seas should diminish on Tuesday, however seas will likely remain steep and hazardous in the outer waters.
