.SYNOPSIS...Despite slightly cooler temperatures today, an
extended stretch of hot, dry, and sunny weather will continue
across interior northwest California through the end of the week.
Onshore breezes and marine layer clouds will keep most coastal
areas seasonably cool.

.DISCUSSION...Extensive morning low clouds have decreased in
coverage thanks to daytime heating, with some lingering clouds along
the Redwood Coast. An approaching upper level trough has temporarily
broken down the high pressure ridge which has been in place over the
West Coast. This feature has also spread mid and high cloudiness
over much of the area. Much of this cloudiness is cumuliform in
nature given the associated instability aloft. Model guidance is
indicating some increasing MUCAPE over the E portions of the area
this afternoon. Given the addition of the dynamic support, felt that
it was prudent to reintroduce isolated thundertorms to the forecast
through the early evening for portions of Trinity county.
Temperatures across much of the area were cooler than this time
yesterday due to the decreasing thicknesses associated with the
trough. Nevertheless, temperatures have soared well into the 90s
across portions of the interior. The Heat Advisory continues for
Lake County.
High pressure will quickly become re-established on Thursday behind
the departing trough, sending temperatures back into the 100s across
many of the interior valleys through Friday. The more expansive Heat
Advisory continues for Thursday and Friday for Trinity, interior
Mendocino, and interior Humboldt for Thursday and Friday.
Temperatures will trend back downward this weekend as the region
starts to feel the influence of a much more substantial trough
digging over the western CONUS. Guidance is in fairly good agreement
on a highly amplified pattern developing by early next week, with an
unseasonably deep trough centered over the Great Basin as the upper
ridge is displaced westward into the Pacific. What this means for NW
CA is an end to the recent run of hot weather over the interior as
afternoon highs return much closer to seasonal normals in the upper
70s to mid 80s. /CB&SEC

.AVIATION...The first half of the day consisted of stratus firmly
holding LIFR Cigs at the coastal terminals, before eventually
scattering to VFR conditions. The clearing proved to be short-lived,
with temporary bouts of IFR conditions as stratus and mid to high
level clouds streamed in from the west through the afternoon.
Overnight, a return of coastal stratus is expected, enhanced from a
passing shortwave. LIFR ceilings will be possible, but KCEC may fare
better as the northerly winds stay somewhat elevated. Ukiah should
remain quiet and VFR. /JJW

.MARINE...With more confidence in the latest guidance, have
upgraded the northern outer waters to Gale Warning, and included the
northern inner with Small Craft Advisory. Gusty north-northwest
winds will continue across the outer waters through mid to late
week, with the strongest winds expected during Thursday. Gusts from
35 to 40 kt appear probable over marine zone 470...thus the
inherited Gale Watch has been maintained. Farther south across the
southern outer waters, gusts will be slightly weaker, but still
solidly within small craft criteria to borderline gale. In addition,
short period seas will be steep and hazardous. Closer to the coast,
a northwesterly oriented tip jet is forecast to develop off of Cape
Mendocino and yield small craft conditions across marine zone 455
through tonight. Beyond Thursday, model guidance continues to show
strong north winds through the weekend which will likely necessitate
additional marine headlines. /JJW
