.SYNOPSIS...Rain and snow showers will continue this evening and
taper off after midnight tonight. Dry, cool, and sunny weather is
expected Monday and Tuesday. More clouds are expected Wednesday,
but dry weather is expected to continue through the workweek.

.DISCUSSION...The upper level trough is moving over the area this
afternoon. The main trough axis has just started to move onto the
north coast. This is bringing an increase in showers that will
continue into the evening. Snow levels are expected to drop to
around 1500 feet. The heavier showers may briefly bring some snow
flakes as low as 1,000 feet, but accumulation is not expected.
Winds will be breezy across the area this evening and these will
start to diminish tonight. Winds are expected to remain elevated
enough tonight to keep much fog from forming in the valleys or at
the coast. Temperatures will drop into the mid 30s at the coast
and the upper 20s in the protected interior valleys. The wind may
keep temperatures from really bottoming out, but they could drop
lower if winds die briefly.

Monday is expected to be a cool, dry, and breezy day across the
area. Monday night is expected to be the coldest, although the
lighter winds may allow fog to form in some of the northern
valleys. This would keep them warmer. Confidence is low on the
exact locations the fog will form. Offshore flow is expected to
keep the coast clear Monday night. Dry and sunny weather is
expected again Tuesday. A few clouds are expected Tuesday night
into Wednesday as a system moves by to the north. This may bring a
few sprinkles to Del Norte county, but even that is looking less
likely. It will likely keep temperatures from getting as cold as
the previous nights. Warmer high temperatures are expected to
return for Thursday and Friday as high pressure continues to build
into the area. There may be some coastal stratus as the warm air
builds in and the inversion strengthens. Saturday models are
hinting at another weather system and some light rain, but
confidence is still low on this. MKK

.AVIATION...Gusty winds and isolated showers were observed for
CEC and ACV in the wake of the cold front, with periods of low VFR
or MVFR CIGs and VSBY. UKI held gusty NW winds. Small hail was
observed and reported with the low freezing levels. Effective
mixing with the relatively unstable environment through the
afternoon and increased pressure gradient with the digging trough
into the evening will maintain the gusty winds. The trough will
enhance showers and lower CIGS with MVFR opportunity again for
CEC and ACV overnight, followed by a brief slight interlude in
gusty winds late tonight. The pressure gradient tightens more
robustly again from the upstream building ridge through tomorrow
afternoon and winds will increase again.

.MARINE...Northerlies will increase late today across the waters
as the pressure gradient tightens with the trough moving farther
inland. Winds are expected to mainly remain below Gale Force in
strength, though some isolated gusts in the southern waters will
reach criteria. Gale Force gusts ramp up mid-morning on Monday
over the southern outer waters, so the Gale Warning was pushed
back to reflect this change. Some gusts around Gale Force will be
possible in the southern inner and northern outer waters, but
overall coverage and consistency should be lacking to warrant
expanding the Gale Warnings to these zones. Given the increasing
winds, steep, short-period seas will develop in all zones as a
result of the increasing winds. These short-period seas will aid
in a chaotic sea state with a a couple of west to northwest
currently impacting the coastal waters of Northwest California.
Portions of the waters will experience Hazardous Seas Warnings, so
opted to issue warnings for the southern waters. That being said,
the sea state will be chaotic across the northern waters as well
given the combination of the swells and short-period seas. The sea
will start to improve on Tuesday, though another west to
northwest swell is expected to move through the waters Tuesday
night and into Wednesday. In addition, isolated thunderstorms will
be possible today through the afternoon hours over the waters
mainly north of Cape Mendocino. Gusty, erratic winds and small
hail will accompany any storms.
