.SYNOPSIS...Warm and dry interior conditions are expected for the
foreseeable future, with cool and mostly cloudy conditions along
the coast. A very small chance of thunderstorms exists across
interior areas early next week.
&&
.DISCUSSION...Much more quiet weather conditions are expected for
the region following yesterday's thunderstorm outbreak across
Trinity County. Drier, more stable air is expected to regain
control of the area for the remainder of the week and weekend,
with a gradual warming trend expected across interior areas. A few
interior valleys may also see patchy valley fog again tonight
thanks to residual moisture from yesterday's storms, although this
will quickly dry over the next day or two. Afternoon high
temperatures will steadily climb from around 90 to 97 today across
interior low elevations, back to around 95 to 105 Friday through
the weekend. Skies will remain generally sunny as well, depending
on the evolution of area wildfires and the smoke they produce.
Along the coast, the marine layer continues to hold strong, and
stratus clouds have once ahead spread relatively far inland. While
the local redwood forests certainly appreciate the fog, it won't
be ideal if you're hoping for more sunlight over the next few
days. Both today and tomorrow these stubborn marine clouds will
be slow to clear, although there is some hope that coastal areas
could break out into the sunlight for a few hours during the
afternoon before the clouds close in again. Looking farther ahead,
there are some indications that the depth of the marine layer will
shrink, which should at least restrict the inland extent of these
clouds, and potentially allow for longer afternoon clearing. In
any case, expect continued cool temperatures this weekend and
early next week.
As far as precipitation goes, very little of it can be expected
for the next week aside from patchy coastal drizzle. However, some
forecast models indicate that another weak low pressure system
could help trigger a few more interior thunderstorms early next
week...particularly Monday. Chances remain low and uncertainty is
very high at this stage, but we will be closely monitoring this
potential in the coming days. /BRC

.AVIATION...IFR to LIFR ceilings will continue through this morning
along the bulk of the NW California coast, and likely linger into
this afternoon for many locations, including ACV and CEC. VSBY at
the immediate coast has been generally good overnight, with a deeper
marine layer and somewhat more mixed boundary layer underneath the
stratus keeping ceilings near or above 500 feet, and limiting fog
formation. With a weak trough passing by today, all indications are
that the inversion will be weaker than the past couple of days, and
that is verified early this morning by the ACV profiler. That could
allow stratus to thin and erode more easily, with perhaps a few more
hours of clearing at ACV and CEC this afternoon than we have been
seeing...but confidence VFR conditions lasting for very long is low.
With onshore flow continuing, expect IFR ceilings to return by early
to mid-evening. Meanwhile, UKI and much of the interior will be VFR,
though some localized LIFR conditions with valley fog around
Weaverville and Trinity Center will last until mid-morning. /AAD

.MARINE...Winds and seas will tend to improve slightly across the
bulk of our coastal waters to the north of Cape Mendocino today,
as high pressure over the Pacific tends to weaken a bit, allowing
for a weaker pressure gradient. Meanwhile, the gradient and low-
level wind flow will continue to favor locally strong winds in
'the fan' downwind of Cape Mendocino. To the lee of the Cape today
and tonight, expect a more expansive area of sustained winds
around 25 kt and gusts over 30 kt compared to yesterday. Stronger
northerly winds will then expand across the outer waters heading
into Friday, while the focus of the strongest winds tends to shift
to the northern waters Friday night and Saturday. Near gale force
gusts and steep seas over 10 feet will be possible there, as
stronger high pressure builds offshore. The thermal trough will
then tend to shift closer to the coast heading into the weekend,
followed gradual weakening of the Pacific high. That pattern will
allow improving conditions, first across the southern inner waters
on Saturday, then expanding gradually north and west across the
rest of our waters on Sunday and Monday. /AAD

.FIRE WEATHER...Scattered thunderstorms produced a significant
number of lightning strikes across a large portion of local fire
weather Zone 283 yesterday (7/22), which covers most of Trinity
county. Hundreds more strikes were observed in adjacent areas of
Siskiyou county as well. Fortunately, wetting rains were also
observed in many areas, including very heavy rain within several
thunderstorm cores.
However, we are entering another extended warm and dry period
today through at least early next week, with gradually increasing
temperatures and lowering humidity expected. Winds are expected to
be generally light but dominated by onshore and upvalley breezes
during the afternoons, and light offshore/downvalley winds
overnight. While wind will be fairly typical and mostly light, it
become occasionally breezy during the mid afternoon to early
evening in localized areas.
In addition, chances for additional thunderstorms will be
monitored for early next week, but as of this writing
probabilities remain low. /BRC
