.SYNOPSIS...Drizzle lingers on the north coast this morning,
however, conditions are expected to dry out once again during Sunday
with east-northeast winds becoming strong across exposed ridges.

.DISCUSSION...A weak disturbance in NW flow aloft moved overhead
this morning, bringing a push of low level moisture and clouds
across the. Some very light showers and drizzle made an appearance
over Del Norte and the northern Humboldt coast with onshore flow
overnight...however measurable precip only showed as a hundredth
across a few sites. Low-level moisture should linger through today
with another night of good RH recoveries overnight tonight.
Another stronger upper shortwave is forecast to dig south across the
Great Basin tomorrow. An exceptionally dry airmass associated with a
modified polar airmass will spread across the region Sunday
afternoon through Tuesday behind the upper wave. In addition, strong
high pressure building over the Great Basin will promote another
round of east-northeast winds gusting from 30 to 50 mph,
particularly across exposed ridges. These may flirt with wind
advisory criteria, thus a high wind watch for Lake, northeastern
Mendocino, southwestern Humboldt and southern Trinity counties
remains in place, where high resolution model guidance has winds
hitting 35-40 mph over the ridges. ENS and NAEFS mean 850mb winds
are over the 97th climatological percentile by Sunday night across
Trinity, NE Mendocino and Lake counties. Also, the ECMWF extreme
forecast index is over the 80th percentile across the Lake county by
Sunday evening. The wind should start to die down Monday afternoon,
however RH's are expected to remain extremely low. Thus, it will not
take much to warrant an extension and continuation of the red flag
warning into Monday night and Tuesday morning.
Clear skies and exceptionally dry air will support seasonably cold
temperatures in valleys across Trinity, interior Humboldt and
northern interior Mendocino on Sunday and Monday night. A freeze
watch has been hoisted for valleys in these locations, and this
could potentially bring the end of the growing season for much of
Trinity county. There is potential for frost formation and cold
temperatures in protected valleys of the coastal zones Sunday night
as well.
Guidance indicates upper ridge building over the forecast area
through mid week as the upper trough slowly edges eastward across
the Desert SW. The warming aloft will likely promote above normal
daytime temperatures, however the dry air and clear skies will also
allow temperatures to plummet each night. Continued frost and
freezing temperatures will be possible each night in some of the
valleys.
There is a great deal variability and spread in the guidance late in
the week, around Friday. WPC clusters indicate a slight potential
for some rain, where 20% of members out of 100 wetter than
mean...this cluster is dominated by CMCE, representing 50% of its
members. Another cluster made up of 44% of ENS members has a
slightly less wet scenario. Some rain will be possible, though there
is still a great deal of uncertainty and about half of the members
all dry.

.AVIATION...A weak frontal boundary is bringing fog and light
drizzle to the coastal areas this morning. The inland areas mainly
remaining clear, although there are some low clouds in the Eel River
valley. The low clouds are expected to dissipate late in the morning
as this boundary moves out of the area although confidence is low on
the exact timing. North winds will increase this afternoon with
gusts of 20 to 25 at the coastal sites. Tonight offshore flow starts
to increase. Confidence is fairly high that Crescent City will
remain clear tonight. It looks like KACV will remain clear as well,
but confidence is lower and there may be some lingering low clouds
around. Inland areas are expected to remain clear. MKK

.MARINE...A shortwave moving into the Pacific Northwest is bringing
light winds and seas this morning and they are expected to persist
through shortly after sunrise. Winds and seas are generally a bit
lighter than previously expected so have pushed back the start times
on the small craft advisories in the outer waters to 9am. Also in
the northern outer waters pushed the gale warning back to start in
the late evening rather than the afternoon. The small craft
advisories for the inner waters still start at noon, but it could be
an hour or two later before conditions really start to increase.
Late Sunday afternoon through Monday morning a long period swell
starts to build into the waters. This swell is currently expected to
build to around 3 to 4 feet at 16 seconds by midday Monday. The
northerly winds start to diminish and turn more northeast on Monday.
This will push the largest waves well off the coast. Winds will
remain breezy, but only around 10 to 20 kt. Tuesday and Wednesday
north to northeast winds are expected across the area, however they
are expected to slowly diminish. The longer period swell is also
expected to slowly diminish through this time period. MKK

.FIRE WEATHER...RH's will generally be higher with light to moderate
winds through tonight. An exceptionally dry airmass is forecast to
spread across the region Sunday through Tuesday. That airmass
combined with very dry vegetation and east-northeast ridgetop winds
gusting from 30 to 50 mph will yield critical to locally extremely
critical fire weather conditions from Sunday afternoon through
Tuesday morning.
