AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION

.SYNOPSIS...High pressure will build into the area through the
weekend with moderating temperatures and more sunshine, but chilly
morning lows. The next storm system will bring widespread rain
and mountain snow along with colder temperatures during the early
to middle portions of the coming week.

.DISCUSSION...Mostly clear skies prevail across most of the area
early this morning. This exception is some low cloudiness over
some of the interior valleys and some cumuliform cloudiness over
Siskiyou County and the Trinity Horn. Some continued modest
instability over the interior this afternoon will lead to some
isolated showers. Models suggest that enough instability may exist
across extreme E Del Norte and NE Humboldt counties for a rumble
of thunder.
An upper low is presently located near 34N/136W with a smaller
upper low near the Bay Area. The smaller low is forecast to become
absorbed in the larger one by Sunday as the larger low shifts E
across southern CA. In the short term, this will lead to some
showery weather over the extreme S portion of the area on Sunday,
but most of the precipitation field will remain wrapped closer to
the main low over the open Pacific, leaving NW CA mostly dry and
partly cloudy. A more significant and colder trough will drop
from the N into the area Monday night and Tuesday, bringing more
widespread rains, and, due to the colder air, mountain snow. Snow
levels are forecast to drop to 2000 to 3000 ft Monday night and
Tuesday.
Drier weather is forecast to return by Thursday, but early
indications are that more precipitation may return by late next

.AVIATION...Clear skies and calm winds kept the flight categories at
VFR overnight at the coastal terminals. With high pressure lingering
in the area, fair weather is expected with light North winds. Low
lying clouds and patchy fog may still develop in the inland valleys
this morning but may not effect flight conditions as they burn off.

.MARINE...Broad high pressure remains across the area through the
night. Light northerly winds will increase in the northern outer
waters this morning. A long period NW swell will enter the waters
this afternoon, accompanied by several smaller swells and increasing
short period seas. /EYS

.BEACH HAZARDS...Beach Hazard Statement remains in effect from
this afternoon through Sunday afternoon. Long period WNW swells
along with SW swells will have the potential to produce an
enhanced sneaker wave threat on area beaches, although the
existence of several other wave groups may prove to be a
mitigating factor. Most notably, a slight uptick in northerlies
may produce enough of an increase in short period seas to obscure
the sneaker wave threat in some locations.
