.SYNOPSIS...Hot and dry weather will continue across inland
northwest California through next week, with near record heat
possible Sunday and Monday. Along the coast, marine layer clouds
will be persistent at least through Saturday, keeping daytime
temperatures relatively cool.

.DISCUSSION...Heat and smoke will continue to be the main concerns
for the next week, though widespread coastal clouds are a notable
weather feature along coastal northwest California this morning.
The marine layer depth overall looks pretty similar to yesterday,
nearing 2000 feet, but stratus is extending a bit farther up some
of the river valleys like the Eel. With a ridge axis nearly
overhead, and very light winds at the surface and aloft, stratus
will once again be stubborn within a few miles of the immediate
coast. Will not rule out some partial clearing in spots, similar
to what was observed north of Trinidad yesterday, but otherwise
expect a mostly cloudy day for the coastal plain. Inland areas
beyond the grasp of the marine air will be pretty hot once again,
with 90s to near 100-degree readings for the interior valleys. The
hottest readings will once again be found in Trinity County,
though smoke that has been shifting northward there from the
August Complex may limit daytime heating a bit more today. Across
Mendocino and portions of Lake County, it looks like another day
of relatively improved smoke and haze conditions, at least away
from the immediate vicinity of the fire, as light south to south-
southeast flow will tend to keep the bulk of the smoke drifting
north.
For Friday, expect minimal changes in the overall sensible weather
for of our area. The upper ridge dominating our weather will shift
more to the east toward Nevada, as a trough passes by well to our
northwest. That will act to keep inland temperatures from warming
up anymore just yet, and allow for a deeper marine layer, with
clouds Friday morning probably extending a little farther inland.
Once again, expect minimal sunshine for coastal areas Friday
afternoon, with continued light onshore winds. Steering winds
aloft may increase a bit from the south, and keep smoke more
restricted to northeastern Mendocino and eastern Trinity Counties.
Saturday will probably see a fairly deep marine layer to start,
with another cool day at the coast. A bit more of a northerly
onshore breeze may not help afternoon sunshine prospects, though
am keeping some optimistically in the forecast for now. We will
also see that ridge begin building back over northern California,
with notably warmer inland temperatures, particularly across Lake
and Mendocino counties, where highs may reach over 100. Our
Excessive Heat Watch begins that day, but at this point it is
looking more like 'Advisory-level' for Heat Risk. The real heat
still looks focused on Sunday and Monday, as all guidance
continues to confidently point toward H5 heights reaching near
598dm and 850 temps 27-30C. Smoke will limit heating near and
downwind of the fires, but for the most part the transport winds
look south to southwesterly, which will carry most of the smoke
toward far eastern Trinity and eastward (or into Siskiyou county
from the Red Salmon). That will allow daytime heating to be more
maximized, with the potential for 105 to 110 degree highs for many
of our inland valleys Sunday and Monday, which would challenge
daily records at places like Ukiah. At the coast, the marine
layer will become shallower, with the possibility for gradually
more afternoon sun and warmer temperatures, especially a little
farther away from the ocean waters. For Tuesday and Wednesday, the
upper ridge is projected to shift northward, off the coast of the
Pacific Northwest, while strong surface high pressure drops
southward to the east of the Cascades. That will likely bring some
gradually 'less hot' readings to the interior, but may also bring
offshore flow, with potentially more smoke spreading back in,
along with more sunshine and warmer temperatures for coastal
areas. Aside from all that, the weather will remain dry, with no
rain in sight through next week. /AAD

.AVIATION...The persisting marine layer appears to be a bit
thinner near shore. Intrusion into low lying coastal areas is
happening regardless, this morning. LIFR ceilings, fog/mist, and
low visibility are expected to linger at the coastal terminals
with visibility improvements and slight ceiling lifts around noon.
IFR may be the limit of afternoon improvements with a return to
low visibility and fog/mist late in the evening at KCEC and KACV.
KUKI saw advected marine stratus yesterday morning, but that may
not repeat with less of a push as winds are lighter and variable.
This situation will be monitored as conditions develop. /EYS

.MARINE.... Calm seas and variable light winds should last into the
end of the week. High pressure, situated offshore, will weaken
tonight and rebuild through the weekend. Expect an uptick in
northerly winds this weekend as a trough approaches from the west
and temporarily shifts the ridge axis eastward into the Great Basin.
Conditions will continue to be monitored as they develop over the
weekend, regarding advisories, as northerlies will pick up over
the outer waters. The ridge will become re- established overhead
Sunday into Monday, allowing for lighter winds near shore as the
thermal trough pushes closer to the coast and relaxes the pressure
