Very active weather forecast through the next 60 hours, discussion
will hit the primary messages, forecast confidence, and weather
impacts.

Now-Tonight: Spring-like warmth and moisture with temperatures in
the 60s and dewpoints in the 50s have overspread much of the area.
For the remainder of the afternoon, look for gusty southwest winds
to gradually subside by sunset, with winds becoming much lighter and
variable during the evening hours. Will let the wind advisory expire
at 3pm as speeds are anticipated to significantly decrease
shortly after. Frontal boundary will stall across the forecast
area tonight, with a large range in temperature/moisture. Lows in
far NW MO will fall into the middle 20s with a low near 50 in
central MO. Continued moistening and focus within warm sector and
along front will allow for a few scattered showers to develop this
evening into Friday morning, and likewise will retain precip
probs.

Friday-Saturday: Rain chances will continue to increase throughout
the day on Friday. More robust convection is expected to
materialize during Friday afternoon and evening, including a few
thunderstorms in the southeast half of the forecast area. With
unseasonably high PWat values, moderate to occasionally heavy
rainfall will be possible, with a subsequent threat for localized
flash flooding. Have continued the flash flood watch for southeast
potions of the forecast area Friday into Friday night. There will
also exist a brief window for an isolated strong storm over
central MO with strong shear and marginal instability, although
the threat is much greater to points well south of the forecast
area.

Of other concern will be the wintry mix transition Friday evening
into the overnight hours, as a band of freezing rain and sleet
will gradually work its way from west to east as colder air
arrives. Accumulating ice, up to 0.10" with locally higher
amounts, may allow for a glaze on surfaces, resulting in an
increasing potential for hazardous travel developing.

As colder air, both at and just above the surface, moves into the
region, look for the majority of the precipitation to transition to
all snow during the daylight hours on Saturday. Model agreement
continues to improve, increasing confidence in timing and
locations of the heaviest swath of snow. At this time, a notable
deformation band looks to move across northwest Missouri. The
highest snowfall totals, on the order of 4-6", are along a swath
from Ottawa KS to Kansas City to Kirksville. The biggest forecast
challenge Friday night into Saturday remains with the speed of
wintry transition of rain to ice to snow. Any longer duration of
either ice or snow will likewise change ice or snow totals. The
key message is that wintry weather is likely Friday evening into
Saturday, with accumulation likely, resulting in travel
difficulties and hazardous conditions. with the combination of ice
and snow, have issued a Winter Storm Watch for the greatest
impacted areas.

Snowfall will exit the area to the east Saturday evening/night.
Generally dry conditions will exist for the remainder of the
weekend, minus one quick wave that may allow for a little light
snow over northern MO Sunday afternoon.

MVFR ceilings will continue to gradually fill in/expand northwest
tonight. Can't rule out some patchy drizzle with these lower
clouds, but prevailing rain chances should hold off until late
tomorrow morning. Ceilings should drop to IFR late tomorrow
morning as well as additional low level moisture advects into the
area. The surface low pressure will start moving into southern MO
tomorrow, which will tighten the pressure gradient again, causing
breezy conditions starting tomorrow afternoon through at least
the end of the TAF period. A changeover to wintry precipitation is
expected to start in far northwest MO tomorrow between 16Z and
18Z. Both freezing rain and sleet are possible, with it eventually
changing over to snow by 00Z. The changeover line should reach
STJ around 23Z, the KC metro over to IRK between 00Z to 01Z, and
then central MO around 06Z. As this line moves through, a mix of
freezing rain and sleet is expected, then it will change over to
all snow.
