A messy winter weather forecast is in store for eastern Kansas and
Missouri Wednesday into Thursday as a couple of shortwave troughs
interact and sweep across the Plains States, which will then usher
in some of the coldest temperatures we have seen yet this year for
the end of the work week.

Water vapor loop this afternoon show a leading shortwave spinning
its way slowly east across the Arizona/Mexico border, on the
southwest side of a larger broad trough that is otherwise dominating
the northern half of North America. Of note within the large
continental trough is a stout shortwave, seen zipping into western
Canada, which is expected to interact with the leading Arizona
shortwave as an arctic airmass sweeps south across the Plains
States, making for what will be a messy winter weather event
Wednesday morning through early Thursday morning.

Confidence is growing that a wintry weather mess is in store for the
region as models continue to converge on a wet solution for
Wednesday and Wednesday night as the Arizona shortwave starts to
eject across the Plains. Model tracks from the operational
NAM/GFS/CAN/ECMWF, and ensembles, are all pointing at very similar
path for the storm, which brings the system up through eastern
Kansas and Missouri. However, while confidence in the track of the
storm is rather high, precipitation types at the surface, and the
conditions that will result in, is rather low owing to boundary
layer temperatures. Soundings and model solutions all point at
precipitation coming in as snow Wednesday morning, which makes sense
with early morning lows a little below freezing; but expectations
are that we will warm just a little through the day as the truly
arctic air wont arrive until that evening as the secondary shortwave
brings the Canadian air south. Have muted the high temperatures from
what the models gave me for Wednesday, but even then we still have
highs 4 or 5 degrees above freezing in the late morning to afternoon
hours, which will have a significant effect on snowfall totals.
WAnd, wile most of the models agree on the track, snow totals are
spread across a wide margin, with the NAM looking to be the most
aggressive up through the 12Z model runs this morning; though the
18Z NAM run has backed off on the higher totals. With all this in
mind, have issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Wednesday for a mix
of wintry weather and snow. Expect later shifts may be able to pin
down timing a bit better and will make further adjustments to the
timing and coverage of the Advisory.

Once we get past the wintry weather of Wednesday night, expect some
of the coldest temperatures of the year, thus far, as an arctic
airmass settles across the region. This will likely result in
morning lows in the low double and single digits Thursday and single
digits and lower Friday morning. A Wind Chill Advisory may be needed
for Thursday and/or Friday morning. Will leave it to later shifts to
evaluate the need for Wind Chill Advisory late this work week. But,
good news, it wont stay cold with temperatures expected to climb
back into the 40s and 50s this weekend.

.Aviation...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Wednesday Night)
Issued at 1126 PM CST TUE FEB 11 2020

VFR conditions are expected to persist through at least sunrise,
after which, conditions will degrade quickly. MVFR ceilings will
move in through 14 to 16Z, along with increasing chances for snow.
Through 18z, most sites will see a drop to IFR ceilings and a
change to rain-snow mix or rain, persisting through the afternoon
into the evening. A strong cold front will push in around 00Z,
this will result in south-southwest winds shifting more northwest
and increasing considerably, with sustained winds around 20kts and
gusts to 30kts. Light snow will likely linger through 06Z.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Wednesday through Monday

 Snow is expected to move in early Wednesday morning from the south.
A change over to a rain/snow mix is expected for most of the area for
the afternoon with a transition back to snow Wednesday evening.
Temperatures will be near freezing, so a slight change could result
in more or less snow. Both the Wednesday morning and evening commutes
should expect slick roads. Snow will move to the east Wednesday
night.

Cold temperatures will filter in quickly Wednesday night. The quick
drop in temperatures will freeze wet roads creating black ice and
therefore slick conditions Thursday morning. Temperatures Thursday
morning will be in the single digits to teens with wind chills below
zero up north and single digits above zero in our southern counties.
Friday morning will also be cold with low temperatures below zero in
northeast MO and single digits elsewhere. Wind chills will be in the
single digits below zero to single digits above zero.
