What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this wind advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Kansas City, MO wrote its last area forecast discussion before this wind advisory went out at Oct 21, 6:40 AM CDT, 8 hours 28 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Oct 21, 6:40 AM CDT, 8 hours 28 minutes before
AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Kansas City/Pleasant Hill MO
640 AM CDT Wed Oct 21 2020

.Discussion...
Issued at 356 AM CDT WED OCT 21 2020

Overnight fog is expected to dissipate a couple hours after sunrise.
Stagnant air and a moist surface layer promoted the development of a
shallow dense fog layer across most of the region. A warm front
along the I-44 corridor is expected to slowly lift north across E KS
and N MO. This afternoon and evening, a LLJ sets up across KS and OK
with the exit region positioned directly over our area. These
kinematics combined with warm air and increased moisture advection
from the advancing front presents a chance for rain for much of the
CWA. The LLJ enhances overnight increasing the rain chances for
areas north of the MO river, particularly those north of US 36.

The LLJ elongates the system pushing it north of the MO/IA boarder
Wednesday night into Thursday. The influx of warm air and moisture
will make it feel more like spring with highs in the low 80s.
Meanwhile, a large Arctic high moves into the Northern Rockies. This
air mass reverses the direction of the warm front transforming it
into a sharp cold front. The pressure gradient between the two
airmasses increases resulting in gusty winds (anticipating gusts
near 40mph during the day). Diurnal heating further mixes the air
enhancing winds and driving up instability. As the cold front begins
to march eastward, there enough CAPE to generate thunderstorms.
Discrete thunderstorm development will be dependent on if the CAP
can be broken earlier than anticipated. Shear is lacking for
supercellular formation and maintenance; however, any storms that
form will not have too far to go to reach severe criteria, mainly
for wind. Hodographs suggest storms will quickly linearize as they
roll east, especially once the CAP weakens around 5PM. Wind will
be the primary hazard as this squall marches across E KS and MO
overnight Thursday into Friday. After the front passes, overnight
temperatures lower to near freezing coupled with a moist low layer
from freshly fallen precipitation creates an favorable
environment for frost across the region.

After a return to fall on Saturday, the polar high pushes further
south ushering another cold front through the area Sunday evening.
This Arctic blast firmly dips temperatures to near freezing.
Widespread isentropic ascent promotes stratiform precipitation
across the CWA. There is still a lot of uncertainty and variability
in the guidance, especially concerning frontogenesis which is one of
the primary drivers of this event. Models are beginning to trend
more towards a rain event as much of the frontogenesis and
precipitation development occurs further south of the 540 thickness
line. Some models continue to encourage a small area of frozen
precipitation Monday morning as the 540 line passes through the
region. Long term guidance suggests the Arctic blast of cold
temperatures will stick around for much of next week.

&&

.Aviation...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Thursday Morning)
Issued at 640 AM CDT WED OCT 21 2020

Early morning fog creates IFR conditions through the morning
hours. MVFR conditions are expected for most of the day. Fog looks
likely during the evening and overnight presenting another chance
for IFR conditions.

A shallow layer of dense fog covers much of the region. Fog
dissipates over the next few hours. Ceilings lift before a warm
front passes through the area around 15-16Z pushing ceilings back
down. Rain is expected to accompany this boundary as it transits
the region south to north. Winds are primarily out of the east
southeast before becoming light and variable. After sunset, a
stable moist low level creates a favorable environment for more
fog development during the evening and overnight.

This hazardous weather outlook is for northwest...north central and
west central Missouri...as well as extreme eastern Kansas.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Light rain showers and isolated thunderstorms will return to the
area late today into the afternoon. Rainfall totals will range from a
trace to a half inch, with the higher totals over northern Missouri.

More detailed information can be accessed at...
 https://www.weather.gov/eax/hwo

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday

Thursday will warm up significantly on the backside of the warm
front with highs in the 80s. Strong winds with gusts up to 40- 45 mph
possible. This warm up will not last long as a cold front will move
through the area Thursday night, bringing a chance of showers and
storms, some of which could be strong to severe. The main threat will
be strong to damaging winds. Temperatures will drop rapidly with
highs only in the 40s to 50s going into the weekend. Winter looks to
arrive Sunday into Monday with some guidance indicating snow may be
possible on Monday, but we will have to see how things trend.
