The heaviest snow, with a band of 6 to 9 inches is forecast to set up for areas along and north of a line from Milledgeville to Iowa City to Sigourney. Storm totals of 3 to 6 inches are possible immediately south of this band to include roughly the I-80 corridor, with lower amounts across the far southern outlook area. During the heaviest period of snow, from late Tuesday afternoon through midnight, peak snowfall rates are likely to reach 1 to 1.5 inches per hour, especially for locations north of I-80. The time window for these heavy snowfall rates will decrease from north to south through the forecast area because of the expectation for a rapid changeover to sleet and freezing rain in the counties along and south of I-80. The sleet may reach as far north as the highway 30 counties later Tuesday night as temperatures warm aloft. A tenth to a quarter inch of ice accumulation from freezing rain is possible mostly south of I-80 before precipitation changes to all rain late Tuesday night. As of 2 AM, a low pressure area was over the Great Lakes region
while high pressure was building southeastward into Iowa. Locally, a
stratus deck was blanketing much of Iowa, northern Missouri, and
northern Illinois, with a pocket of clear skies from Clinton to
Macomb. Temperatures were in the mainly in the mid and upper 20s,
but Clinton dropped into the teens with the clearing. Dew points
were mainly in the upper teens to mid 20s.

High pressure will build into the area today providing the region
with mostly sunny skies and a west breeze at 10 to 15 MPH.
Temperatures will be near normals, with highs in the upper 20s to
lower 30s. Clouds will spread into the region from the southwest
late tonight, but with light winds and initially mostly clear skies
temperatures will drop into the low teens north to upper teens
south.

A significant winter storm is forecast Tuesday into Wednesday.
Changes:
1. A shift southward in all global model data has been noted,
resulting in a longer duration of snow and ice in our area.
2. The southern shift has the axis of heaviest snow falling through
the northern 1/2 of the CWA, rather than clipping our far north.
3. The threat for a period of icing has increased, during the midway
portion of the event, which could bring several tenths of a inch of
ice, especially along an Ottumwa to Sterling Illinois line.
Discussion:
A strong moist warm advection period will commence in our area by
late morning Tuesday, as indicated by all model data. This should be
driven over deep layer, with low levels still quite cold. I feel the
first few hours of precipitation in all areas will be snow, possibly
heavy. The band of moderate to heavy snow will push northeast
through our area Tuesday afternoon and evening, persisting longest
along Des Moines, to Iowa City/Cedar Rapids, to Freeport axis. As
time goes on Tuesday evening, a warm nose is forecast to transition
snow to sleet and freezing rain, especially in the 9 PM to 8 AM time
frame. In that period, of precip, it will be dark. Roads will
likely remain cold, and surfaces able to accumulate ice more
efficiently than daytime. Thus, I feel snow and ice are a balanced
threat for this storm through early Wednesday morning.
Snow amounts of 4 to 8 inches appear likely along and north of a
line from Fairfield to the Quad Cities to Sterling, while just south
of that axis, a band of 2 to 3 inches is expected, where a
transition to ice is expected earlier. The far south and far east,
a quicker yet transition, with more marginal temperatures should
keep amounts of ice and snow more minimal, less than 2 inches.
In the end, this is probably a headlined event for all areas, with
warning north, and advisory south, but the time frame now has us
thinking a winter storm watch for all but our far south and east.
This should highlight the areas most prone to seeing significant
snow and ice.
While our attention is placed on the Tue-Wed storm, there is yet
another potential winter event forecast for Thursday PM through
Friday AM. The ECMWF remains bullish on forecasting a large
deformation zone event. We will begin highlighting that possible
storm in the coming day, but with the notable day 2-3 storm, we
will not be able to message that one directly yet.

period.

South of that line, snow will change to a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain Tuesday evening and overnight.
