Snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches are likley, along with ice accumulations of up to two tenths of an inch. Locally higher amounts of snow may occur in areas that remain in snow for longer durations and at heavy snowfall rates. There also may be a period of sleet accumulation. With morning temperatures several degrees colder than forecast
mins to start the day, we are going to reduce highs for the day.
Typical model bias is noted on initial Arctic air, and that seems
to be in play today. I lowered to single digits northwest to lower
teens through CID/IOW/DBQ, and upper teens near the QCA. Despite
the sun, the stout low level inversion of the Arctic air should
limit mixing depth.

clear skies over most of the cwa (except our far east).
Temperatures were quite cold, the coldest seen since mid Dec, but
would have been much worse with a deep snow cover. Nevertheless,
early morning temperatures were in the single digits and teens
above zero. NW winds were gusting to around 30 mph and the coldest
wind chill was at Independence with 20 below zero at 2 am.

Very cold but dry in the short term.
Early this morning: Wind chills are forecast to dip a bit colder
than 20 below in Benton, Buchanan, and Delaware counties for a
couple of hours either side of sunrise. Because these readings are
barely into the wind chill advisory criteria and for a short time I
will most likely issue a special weather statement to cover this
situation.
Today: Lots of sunshine today with arctic high pressure centered
across the area. This will be a cold day with gradually diminishing
northwest winds. Highs will range from 10 above at Independence
to 25 at Macomb. Most locations will be in the teens to lower 20s.
Tonight: The high pressure ridge gradually shifts off to our east
with warm air advection kicking in on the return flow. Time-height
sections indicate mid/high level clouds increasing overnight, and
winds eventually turning southeast. This will mean lows tonight
should occur this evening (in the single digits and teens) then
slowly rising temperatures after midnight.

Key Points...
1. The upcoming Storm, is less of a winter cyclone, but a strong
wave of warm advection precipitation. That's the same type of
forcing that brought significant precipitation last week. It's only
a closed storm system at the surface and aloft, well after it passes
by our area.
2. Beginning in Arctic air, all locations will begin as snow, then
transition through a sleet phase, to freezing rain to rain, then
back again as the Arctic cold front passes early Saturday.
3. The transitions in precipitation will be fastest in the south CWA,
slowest in the north. Thus, higher snow totals are forecast for
along and north of I-80, and low amounts south. Still, this is most
likely shaping up to be 2 to 5 inch snow event, consistent from
previous forecasts.
Much has been said on this storm the past few days and night, and
confidence in snow totals remains LOW. This is not due to a shift in
track, just the nature of the type of the event. I still am
expecting a cold dry morning to start Friday, with snow spreading
into western areas by 10 AM, then moving to near the Illinois border
by Noon, and through our east by 4 PM. That roughly matches the
ongoing watch headline. The bulk of snow accumulation will occur in
the first 4 hours of the event in any location, as moderate snow
falls and transitions from a dry snow, to wet. A warm wedge aloft
will aggressively move towards our area, and should change snow to
sleet, then freezing rain in the south by 6 PM. In all areas that
remain snow during the late afternoon and evening Friday, blowing
snow may become a hazard, as southeast winds blow at 20 to 30 mph.
The warm wedge / freezing rain line will rapidly advance north,
reaching into Wisconsin by Midnight, just 6 hours from when it
reached northeast MO. This might seem very concerning for ice, but I
do believe the majority of the QPF will fall prior to the
transition, with light freezing rain falling after, maybe freezing
drizzle by late evening, as the moisture really shifts east. Again,
this is nearly identical to the process you get when there is no
real strong closed mid level low to draw moisture back into the
cyclonic circulation, there just isn't one. It's a passing strong
mid level wave, along a very strong thermal boundary.
There are two scenarios which may play out for Saturday, and I'm
uncertain which one will dominate. The snow that falls Friday PM may
be well capped off by a melted top layer with freezing rain on it.
As winds crank up in Arctic CAA Saturday, we will likely exceed wind
advisory levels, of 45 mph on gusts and 30 mph sustained. That
strong CAA will freeze the top layer of snow hard, reducing any
blowing snow threat to zero. However, if we get snow showers in the
CAA, which is entirely possible, we may have a serious blowing snow
threat as it moves over a near frictionless surface! I can see both
happening, and for now, will leave the blowing snow in the forecast.
As far as headlines, with snow generally in the 2-4 inch range for
most of the CWA, and ice following, vs at the start, I think this
may be normally a higher end advisory event. The timing does include
the Friday afternoon and evening, with commute times, and that has
me leaning towards a possible warning. The lingering impacts of
advisory wind/wind chills/possible blowing snow Saturday supports
the at least and advisory through 6 PM Saturday. A watch is still
supported in my opinion, and will keep that going, as there is still
models varied from little if any snow to heavy amounts anyway. I am
not willing to lower any threat given the timing and impact
potential.
Beyond this, several days of near advisory wind chills are
expected, with bitterly cold air in place until Wednesday. These
can be addressed after the storm passes. If we do have a 2 inch
snowpack following this event, lows below -10 are possible
Saturday night through Monday night.
