Issued at 215 AM CDT Fri May 29 2020 Rains have ended, and clouds are moving out of Iowa and by sunrise, they should have pushed toward our eastern counties only. This should allow for a combination of radiational cooling and dry/CAA to drop temperatures to the lower to mid 50 over Iowa, and mid 50s to around 60 over Illinois and NE MO. Dewpoints are falling to the 40s with this advection, which should feel remarkably refreshing today. && .SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight) ISSUED AT 215 AM CDT Fri May 29 2020 A simply great weather day is in store today, with highs only reaching the upper 60s north to lower 70s south. High pressure will be overhead through tonight, with skies remaining clear after the morning clearing finishes. A few afternoon cumulus are possible, but dewpoints will remain low, so coverage of clouds should not approach opaque levels. Tonight, dry air, clear skies, and light winds will help lows drop to the upper 40s to lower 50s. Open those windows! .LONG TERM...(Saturday through Thursday) ISSUED AT 215 AM CDT Fri May 29 2020 Key Messages: 1) Mainly quiet and dry weekend with high pressure over the Midwest. 2) Active weather returns by Monday with increasing temperatures and precipitation chances. Discussion. Saturday through Sunday... Guidance continues to favor Canadian high pressure building south into the Mississippi River Valley at the beginning of the period. Other than a slight chance of showers and storms across our far southwest Saturday morning, our weather will be mainly dry for the weekend with partly to mostly sunny skies. Afternoon highs will be in the upper 60s to mid 70s with dewpoints in the upper 40s to low 50s, making for more comfortable weather compared to most of the past week. Sunday Night through Monday... High pressure will move into the Ohio River Valley, allowing flow to switch from the east to the south/southwest. An elevated warm front is progged to follow right behind it, leading to increasing precipitation chances Sunday night and Monday with WAA increasing aloft. Chances are mixed amongst models right now with differences in forcing, with the ECMWF being the most aggressive as it hints at a decaying MCS moving across the area. For right now have slight chance to chance POPs, mainly for areas along and north of I-80. All global guidance is in good agreement of broad 500 hPa ridging building across the southern Plains/western Gulf states, leading to a 'ring of fire' pattern setting up across the mid and upper Mississippi River Valley with numerous shortwaves and perturbations moving through the zonal/northwest flow. It's still early to get a good grasp on our severe weather potential, but very high GEFS SCP probabilities across the area (especially Tuesday evening) hint that this will be something to keep an eye on in the coming days. The blend of models continues to favor afternoon highs from Tuesday through next Friday in the mid to upper 80s and overnight lows in upper 60s to near 70. This is around 10 degrees above where we should be for the beginning of Meteorological Summer. Issued at 215 AM CDT Fri May 29 2020 Significant rains did fall Thursday, but I feel it's worth noting, several basins did not receive significant rainfall. The Rock and Green rivers saw rains fall on locations well upstream, so the short term rises may be less, or just delay the fall. Rains fell quite heavily on the lower Wapsi, and upper Wapsi basin. This should make for a tricky forecasts with a short term rise, followed by a steady level or falling, then a routed rise late in the period. The Iowa River at Marengo remains forecast to reach minor flood stage Sunday.
